Studying componential analysis of meaning has enhanced my understanding of how words convey meaning. Many words share similar characteristics. For instance, the term "lexeme" may sound like a person's name, but it encompasses much more than that. It helps me understand the concept of a lexeme and how it is utilized within words or sentences. I truly appreciate how you break down meanings and provide examples to facilitate our understanding. The use of Componential Analysis Method (CAM) has been incredibly helpful in grasping word definitions. Thank you, Prof, for making this material so useful and informative!

This video really opened my eye on how to do a componential analysis of lexemes. In the surface level, all of these words do seem similar but different, but with the use of componential analysis, we can clearly point out the differences, or differentiae, and use that to create our own definition of the lexemes. This was a great and comprehensive lesson, Prof. Andy! Thank you very much.

Reflecting on Componential Analysis of Meaning (CAM), I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how language constructs meaning through shared and contrasting features among words. This not only clarifies the relationship between lexemes, like "pencil" and "ballpen," but also emphasizes the importance of precision in definitions. In this video, the breakdown of words into their semantic features shows how a specific lexeme differs from the general class to which it belongs. Thank you for this detailed lecture, Prof!

This video on componential analysis of meaning was incredibly insightful! The explanation of how lexemes are defined using genus and differentiae really helped clarify the process of breaking down complex meanings. I appreciated how you illustrated the concept with examples, making it much easier to grasp how specific characteristics set words apart within broader categories. The use of CAM (Componential Analysis Method) as a tool for creating precise definitions of words underscores its importance in linguistic analysis. It’s fascinating to see how this approach can enhance our understanding of language and improve communication clarity. Thank you, Prof!

This is a very comprehensive discussion about the world of semantics! Thank you, Prof Andy! I realize that in order to create definitions of a word, we need to analyze and involve shared and contrastive features of it in a lexeme. The breakdown of the definitions between genus and differentiae is very interesting, but there are times that I find it very confusing. This video explained Componential Analysis of Meaning (CAM) in a clear and concise manner. As shown in the example, through the table, we can see which features are shared by the lexemes, as represented by the plus sign (+). However, they also have contrasting features, as represented by the minus sign (-). At first glance, it might seem that they are all the same, but through CAM, we can assess their similarities and differences in a comprehensive way. Thank you so much, Prof!

Studying semantics is interesting! Componential analysis of meaning can help on writing definitions. Because componential analysis of meaning separates lexemes according to their shared and contrastive features. The genus and differentiae, on the other hand, are the two components of the definition. Differentiae is the quality that distinguishes a word from other members of the same class, whereas genus is the overall class to which the word belongs. The componential analysis of meaning that Sir Andy demonstrated in the video was used to identify both of these.

This lesson on Componential Analysis of Meaning helped me in various ways. First, completing the table was a big help in identifying which lexemes share the same or different plus and minus values. As the professor observed, I also noticed that the fountain pen and ballpoint pen had the same set of plus and minus values initially, but after adding another column for a semantic feature, each item now had a distinct set of plus and minus values. However, in the aspect of "used on paper," I began to wonder if there could be an exception, such as for specific types of paper. For instance, does a particular type of paper accept only certain writing instruments? What about "Manila Paper"? It's still paper, right, and can be used with permanent ink? This lesson and video on componential analysis of meaning helped me differentiate one lexeme from another based on their shared and contrastive diagnostic features. My earlier dilemma about permanent markers and their use on paper was resolved by the end of the lesson, as the plus/minus signs became clearer.

I really find it interesting how the Componential Analysis of Meaning (CAM) can help us create a definition comprehensively, with the shared features we can find the similarities of lexemes, while on the other hand diagnostic features helps us differentiate lexemes from one another, therefore allowing us to come up with a clear definition out of the features with enough distinction to set them apart so we don't confuse certain words from one another.
