Starfield Performance Upgrade - 40FPS, 60FPS, VRR And More - The Complete Breakdown

- Digital Foundry had early access to the display mode update for Starfield, and we've put together this detailed report on the various performance options and visual settings choices available. While Bethesda recommends a 120Hz display with VRR (as do we actually!), there's a wealth of viable options for those with standard 60Hz screens with no variable refresh rate support... and major cities apart, the game does a good job of hitting 60 frames per second.

I hate that these days, the only way to get a stable experience is to wait months, even years after a game's launch in order to get decent performance and stability.
That’s why gamers are playing 5+ year old games more
Don't buy the game at launch. Wait months or years, then buy the game on sale. You get to play the game, and you get it at a cheaper price with all the DLC and fixes.
But if they are terrible at 60 fps
r/PatientGamers
Well last gen games launched at 30 fps and never got upgraded to 60 so im not sure what the complaints are about
I like the uncapped option because it means Starfield will get a performance boost when the next consoles come out without a patch.
Good point didn’t think of that
Also we will be able to set it to visual 60 FPS for a locked 1440p at 60 FPS mode.
Xbox Series X X
Yes, and no. Creation Engine doesn't really run above 60 fps even on PC. There is a cap in place at the engine level because the physics and timed events in games that use it, rely on a maximum frame rate of 60 fps to operate in a stable manner.
Things get a bit wonky above 60 fps.
So at best, Starfield on next gen hardware SHOULD be expected to run Visuals at a target 60 FPS, and keep the visuals settings(which mind you aren't maxed out) and the DRS should maintain 4K clarity.
@@ClapperDan, they changed that for starfield and fallout 76. There's is no more cap after fallout 4.
As always: Give consumers the choice and everybody is happy.
Where can I play the version of the game that isn't written by a self absorbed narcissist?
@@Azerkeuxare you talking about Todd Howard? If so I don’t agree that he is one and also he does not write the games. If you are talking about the lead writer then I can’t give an opinion about him.
@@ro6uefour50 Emil Pagliarulo. Todd is the CEO/Figurehead and has basically nothing to do with development
Exactly. Developers and DF think that console gamers are stupid and can´t handle multiple modes. 30, 40, 60, unlocked, combining visual with 60 fps etc should be the norm
*hippie
Game companies have conditioned us to wait, and they wonder why sales are down...
Wait for a deep sale or wait for it to come to a subscription service because by then the game is fully patched.
And yet after waiting the performance is still not perfect.
I thought I heard this games sales were fantastic though?
You don't understand deadlines do you?
Starfield vendió más de 12 millones y encima lo tienes en Gamepass😂😂 te parece poco 😂
As someone who played this a bit on PC(thanks to PC GamePass), I have to say it plays so much nicer at 60 or higher. Everything just feels so much better. This is a welcome update.

I might be downvoted for suggesting this but, yes you are right... so does every other game I have ever played. Starfield is not some kind of outlier, if you own a modern beefy system, you'll want to play a game like this at 60fps+. Unfortunately around launch with a very powerful pc, there were still areas where the fps totally tanked, I remember Akila city to be especially bad. I'm installing it now to see if it has somewhat improved since then. - Edit - It has improved, more options like DLSS help to get a good framerate.
I might give 40fps a try. Usually a good balance between visuals and responsiveness

It's nice to see some games are now giving players more freedom over visual settings. I've often wondered why consoles have been so restrictive in this regard. There's no harm in defaulting to optimised reccomended settings, but also giving the player freedom to tinker.
It seems like a 40 fps mode should be available for Series S at some point. 40 fps feels so much better than 30 fps and very nearly as good as 60 fps for me.
spoken like a victim of domestic abuse. "mhm, 40 FPS is just as good as 60 FPS pappa Todd". Disgusting. They don't deserve a dime for Starfield.
I always go with 40 over 60 if the option is available. I wish more games supported it this generation honestly. I guess a lot of people dont have the displays
@@duppypixels Id push more options like 40 simply so that 60fps becomes a standard option and devs stop forcing stupid 30 on their bloated games. More options is better.
40 fps is a terrible looking slideshow no better than 30 fps.
120Hz TVs are still not common which is needed for 40 FPS mode so I don’t think most developers will put in time to optimize for 40 FPS.
Just checked it out and it really makes a difference. Definitely gonna continue my adventure now.
This is a good patch, I never expected to get a locked 60fps on the console, but the added higher framerate features and reasonable visual cutbacks are welcomed. Can't wait to jump back in.

This is exactly why we love Digital Foundry!
Love the updated, space exploration plus gunplay nice. Looks incredible.
60fps in most places and durpy durp in major cities. Exactly what I thought we could get on this hardware. I'm happy with this. Performance wise, we have the game that we should have had at launch. :D
No! It's much better to have the game run like trash for the entire experience instead of a few rough spots!
Shame the rest of the game is junk 😢
Thing is we could have had it at launch. This is basically exactly what Bethesda said they had it running like - decent in most places but poor here and there - before deciding to lock it to 30fps. Honestly not sure why they didn't just give people the option and let the chips fall.
Great job, Oliver! Love your videos.
Very happy to see this. Letting users choose how they want to play, perferring frame rates over resolutions/quality settings is a very good trend that I hope all developers embrace.
I do find internally rendering at 900p and upscaling to full 4K a pretty strange choice, I wonder if they could trade higher internal resolution for a lower upscaling resolution for better results. Maybe rendering at ~1080p and upscaling to 1440p, or perhaps have a dynamic resolution that lets the internal resolution go higher when there is headroom. It feels like there could be some further balancing/tweaking of this that could reduce the shimmering.
Overall, I applaud Bethesda for putting in the effort for these things, although I also think they should have been there at launch. At least a 40 FPS mode or some sort of VRR unlocked mode.
Good analysis!
Nice! I welcome this update
60fps on visuals with no hud look like a brand new game and looks amazing
Thanks for the balanced review Oliver. One quick question. So if we need a 120hz capable display to enable 40fps mode, how do we end up hovering around 40fps during testing scenes on a 60fps target? In the old days, if your CRT couldn't flick up to 60hz then you were basically out of luck, but here we have Starfield able to exist at sub 60hz and still display on the VDU - is it simply the disparity which causes issues?
I have a TV that can do 120hz VRR but only HDR not Dolby Vision at that refresh rate. I don’t really ever notice the difference between properly calibrated HGIG HDR vs Dolby Vision so when playing a multiplayer shooter I use 120 without Dolby.
I’m confused by the table at the start of this video. Is it saying to get VRR I have to be in 120hz mode on my Xbox and Tv? Even if I want to play in 60fps target?
Ideally I’d play 60fps, visual mode, Dolby vision with my Xbox set to 60fps mode.
Great vid
Going forward. All games should have all these visual options.. 👍
I have a Pc with a 5700x and 4070ti and I play my games at 1440p with 60fps cap at max settings... I'm happy with that.
You can see how variable rate shading is working on the most GPU demand areas, like forest with green geysers on Jemison planet. When you stay close to any geyser with rich forest on background.
And at least on PC VRS can save much fps in those stress scenarios (depends on tweaking the % value of VRS)
any chance of getting an updated pc performance guide? they've changed/added quite a bit since your last pc video.
Nice to have a 60fps that works in most places. But did they fix HDR yet? It felt like playing on a 2004 cheap LCD even being on an OLED. I couldn’t play because of all the gray. I want deep blacks on my OLED.
This culture of optimisation a year after a game has been released has to stop.
Playing on Visuals 60 VRR. Feels good, Haven't been to a city yet though but if it drops to 30-40 I'm fine given i played the game a bunch already at 30.
The only "issue" I've had so far is there are certain pads that when you land you end up under the landing bay. They had that fixed on the last patch but seems to have made a return. Not sure if anyone else had this issue too or not! New Homestead and Gagarin for starters

That's fast great job guy's
Still haven't played yet, might wait for the expansion and official mod support
Starfield is worth playing in 2028
Is there aby difference in graphics beetwen 30fps and 40fps modes?
honestly to people who read the comments, the 60fps is a game changer for pc monitors. been playing it on 60fps uncapped with VRR on and the experience is night and day on a monitor. Monitor's don't support interpolation like TV's (transistions one frame to the next smoothly) so 30fps is jarring, and VRR doesn't kick in if the Hz goes under 48Hz. even if you get slow down in the 2 main city hubs, thats only a small minor part of the game. also if you go into accessibility options there are FoV sliders (not sure how new) but having FoV cranked up to 90 and at 60fps (mostly) is a huge win!
Imagine playing a game at release
Portal 2 was great at release...probably the last such game.
Imagine being grateful you did at all
Honestly it was really good at release. Yeah its defo way better now but it's mostly for QoL reasons. Myself and lots of people I know had an absolut blast playing through from launch day.
And a Bugthesda game at that!
I played it at release and the only bug I encountered was one spinnnng person all playthrough.
3:10 For crowd density, I'm 60% sure, you have to load into a new scene for it to take effect e.g., going through a loading screen, to see the difference in crowd density. Quitting and reloading a save once you change it doesn't change the density I'm fairly sure.
I restarted the game between attempts.
Maybe it really needs to load different location and then back
@@damianabregba7476 That kinda makes sense, if it saves the position of NPCs into your save game - which might be necessary to not break quests that involve NPCs.
I noticed in Bethesda games they don't run physics everywhere, just in areas which had a player or NPC interaction, like on shelves you'll see some items float and not fall due to gravity, pick one up and all of a sudden the entire shelf will have objects falling down. I wonder if this is why cities can slow down, when NPCs are walking nearby other physics objects the game starts simulating them. Hundreds of NPCs then cause the simulation to explode.
Now I can start my game+

It sounds as though they unlocked the settings that TH said they had when testing the game originally. "It hits 60 but not in all areas stably".
Just think how much better the performance will be once they implement FSR3 when it becomes available for console at sometime soon.

I ended up dropping the game after finishing the campaign because those 30 fps on console gave me headaches, everything was too slow, sluggish. Now with these updates, I'll give it another chance and do the New Game Plus. In 2023 and still playing games at 30 fps?? That doesn't make sense, unless it's a game completely focused on narrative like Life is Strange or Hellblade 2, which is coming out in a few days. In those cases, 30 fps won't be too much of a hindrance.
Nice. Looking forward to trying out the new options.

Lots of people don't remember that XSX is actually CPU limited. No amount of upscaling can fix that. Upscaling only helps the GPU, which is why visual mode can still reach 60 fps, but performance mode locked at 30 fps puts too much load on the CPU. Performance mode at 30 fps won't stress the XSX GPU at all. Starfield is in fact CPU limited, not GPU limited.

I think the only problem is the major cities in starfield, I think this is because the creation engine lacks mesh shaders, adding mesh shaders to remove objects that are not visible to the field of view inside those demanding areas would be a very good choice to add, so that we can see higher frame rates..

It's always a choice to target or not target 60. I don't care about any excuses developers have anymore.
Did they do an update to the game to make it fundamentally a better game? Because that’s what the game was lacking at launch, imo.
So, what is resolution for 40 and 60 fps modes? Oliver did not tell this clearly.
Resolution on Series X, Visual and Performance?
It's certainly understandable why the game has the performance, visual and design limitations it does, (and maybe this isn't in DF's purview) but it's totally valid to question Bethesda's design sensibilities that continue to hobble their games. It's novel I guess that a cheese wheel stays where I drop it no matter where I go, but both Starfield and Fallout 76 show clear, significant problems that Bethesda admits are because of object persistance---problems that get in the way of basic interaction with the game and the game's core systems. Yet they rolled ahead with a loot-driven online service game with a severely restricted inventory and Stafield with the performance, visual, and other issues that they're still now working to iron out. Is that worth it? (& no disrespect to clearly talented and hardworking developers here, but from a critical/artistic perspective I don't think these design priorities are serving these works)
"So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn't Stop To Think If They Should..."
Ive been saying this all along. If the way you make your game proves impossible to deliver stable performance, maybe change the way you make the game.
Don't disagree with most of what you said, but the whole live service game push at Bethesda was due to Zenimax. It was happening for other Bethesda published titles as well
