  • In this class you will learn how to make a stunning Opal, wood and resin pendant. These pendants look like a miniature landscape with Aurora Borealis dancing in the sky! Whether you call them "secret wood pendants" or "Aurora Borealis necklaces" they are super fun to make.
Everything from the tools, materials and polishing techniques will be covered. This project has a bit of everything for beginners in woodworking, resin crafts and jewellery making. You won't need a workshop full of tools and you can make resin pendants like these with basic had tools (though power tools certainly help!).

Mallee rhymes with valley. The mallee is a type of Australian eucalyptus tree found in North Western Victoria. The name comes from the local indigenous word for water - the mallee eucalyptus tree has drinking water in it's roots. It's not "exotic" as you say but extremely common. Great pendant though, lovely tutorial. Thanks.

Good project. I think I'm going to make some for my granddaughters. I think the only change I will make is to cut a small groove in the top with the bandsaw and put the opal slice in it. That way you have opal totally encased in resin.

Good video Dan, are we likely to see more use of resin?

I would have turned it the other way so it looked like the Aurora Borealis for reals.

Nice thx. I would put the faux opal in the middle of the pendant, so you could not see it from the back. Also, do you think fabuluster polish would work on the resin?

Thank you for posting this video and also thank you for sharing where you got the bella opal material, I am going to be ordering some this week, great looking pendant by the way, I want to experiment with the opal to use it with polymer clay and heat it with the clay in an oven at lower temp and less time. Have you ever heated the opal up? Or do you know anyone who has and what the outcome of it was? I cannot find an information about heating the opal here on You Tube.

Really nice pendant, its just a pity you drilled the hole in the wood and not the resin,it would of looked like aurora borealis over mountains,as seen in scotland lol nice job though, that opal stuff is bloody expensive lol

Holy moly a slice of faux opal is over a hundred quid! 😱🤣
Good grief why is it so spendy when it's not the real deal?!
I dare not even look at real opal prices 😂😂

maCRAme? Brits! MACrame. But seriously, great project. I wonder if you mounted the blank on the lathe and domed it a bit if the resin would make the opal pop even more.
