My more observant family members have let me know that the chalk drawing in the video and the drawing in the flashback pictures are completely different. Either way, if you have any ideas on how to preserve the chalk in the new floor let me know. Thanks!
@falllineridge I draw with chalk. I use hair spray or they have a spray in the art section of most craft stores that will protect them until you can get some poly on it.
You may try writing on some other boards with chalk and trying different approaches to sealing it in. My suggestion would be maybe spray lacquer a few light coats to seal it then finish over it with whatever you plan on sealing the floor with. You will have to scuff the lacquer up with steel wool or light sand paper to get other finishes such as poly or spar varnish to adhere to it. It will need a mechanical bond like scuffing. Multiple lacquer coats bond together using chemical bond no sanding is usually required between coats.
I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to post your videos. I realize that you have a lot of obligations but just know that you are appreciated and I look forward to your videos.
Long videos welcome anytime! Isn't the nature that God creates wonderful! I offered up a prayer of thanks for you, your family and your endeavours. Love seeing your assistant out helping you! Best wishes, Sonja
I cut a 36" or so walnut back in the 70's and had it milled. Almost broke my little truck down getting it loaded and transported to the sawmill, one log at a time. It was worth it. I stickered and stacked it in the dry and then had to move away for work for almost 40 years. When I retired and moved back home, my brother needed a mantle for his home, so I pulled a 4" slab out of my stack and we (it took two of us to handle it in my lunchbox planer) planed it to size and cut to length. Without a doubt, it was 100% the blackest and most beautiful walnut I have ever seen! When the finish went on, it glistened and is gorgeous above his fireplace. We did find two small nails when planing it. The nails must have been hammered in about 100 years ago, probably by a small kid that needed something to do. We'll never know. This slab was from the center of the log. We removed the nails and left the marks from the removal on his mantle as a testament of time gone by. And had to replace some planer cutters. Told him if he ever moved, he had to take the mantle with him. lol You have some very pretty wood! Thanks.
I have an American Walnut ( more brown in color ) desk that was made from Walnut trees that grew on my grandfather's farm - it weighs @150lbs - the drawer boxes and bottoms are Walnut also
So excited to see you posted another great video!! Those are beautiful boards! The floor will be so pretty!!You worked hard for them! Your little boy is growing so fast - so precious!! We've been watching your old videos - still fun to watch. God bless y'all in all ways!! Thanks for taking time to share these with us!! 🥰🙏🥰👍
I thank God that He is first in your life and it’s cool that you’ve been attending Seminary School but it is so good to see some new videos. Hope to see more in the future! Praying for ya bud!
Thank you for another wonderful video! Always enjoy your honesty, the things I learn from you and of course, your sweet little guy 😊 Bless you and yours!! 😊
Mate, I've always loved watching your channel. I didn't realise how much I've missed you all until you posted the previous episode. Your young man is certainly growing up. I wish you all the very best for the future. Have a good one, mate. 👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Hey Wess, take an inch or an inch and a quarter wood auger and punch a hole in that walnut tree that you think is rotten. That will tell the tale if it is hollow and rotten or not. Also your little hunting buddy sure knows how to keep it real. He was cold and hungry and not afraid to let you know. How cool. Man, I totally get it that you have a higher calling that is taking you away but I for one sure do miss what you did before. One of my more favorite UA-cam channels.
Wes, I absolutely love Black Walnut lumber. When you hit it with the water I just fall in love. Man that is beautiful stuff. Congrats. That’s going to look awesome in your house.
Another FLR video amazing. There's no need to put time stamps in. We are gonna watch the whole thing. Also on preserving the chalk write on some other wood with chalk and try different coating over it to see what works best. Looking forward to some christmas tree field action on the homestead. Great content as always and keep up the good work.
A walnut floor??? Wow!! And the fact that you got the wood from your own property and did all the milling on it just adds a huge amount to it. Someone years from now will be showing the floor off and telling the story
Nice video - good luck with everything you and your family do. Nice grained walnut. A couple of ways to preserve the chalk drawings is to seal it with clear spar varnish or clear epoxy. Stay safe.
I have a stack of 2" sweetgum slabs. I think I'm going to make flooring with them. It warps bad but the colors that shoot through it are very pretty. Always glad to see one of your videos. God Bless.
Wow, Beautiful grain in those boards! Great to see a new video from you! We are getting ready to start this kind of lifestyle God willing, I've grown up all my life in the city, so I am really excited! Our house is under contract, now we are just praying we find the right place to move to. As soon as we sell, I am getting a Timberking 1400 sawmill, so your sawmill videos will be very helpful! Thank you for making such wonderful videos, Love your channel! I pray the Lord bless you and your family!
You got some beautiful boards out of that walnut. Pertaining to the walnut sawdust, do not use it for bedding for any animals, because it is toxic to them also. You probably know this, but I figured I would mention this just in case. Great video by the way.
Hi Wes, Of course we enjoy your videos!! We wish we could see you more. As always God bless you and your family from your long-time California subscriber 🙏 🤲
Good to see you and your son. That wood is beautiful. How's about a urethane clearcoat spray for that timecapsule preservation? I don't know if it would work, but I think it would preserve it for a long time if it can be done. See you soon!
Beautiful lumber man. Hope your seminary work is going well. Please let me know if you end up preaching the Word. I'm in GA also. I'd love to see you preach brother. I'm Methodist but I think we are all God's children and I think you will do great things towards the Gospel. I'll listen to you preach anytime friend.
The videos are worth waiting for. Walnut is very beautiful wood and sought after wood, I guess that is what makes the cost higher. I was curious why not use the lighter sapwood? Is it too soft? I always thought the contrast of the sapwood just adds more beauty to the boards. Little Wes is a star in the making.
It is softer, but probably still usable. I'll probably end up using some of the pieces with sapwood in for that contrast, because I think it looks great too.
Hey Wes, great to video. About the cedar artwork. I preserved rough sawn eastern red cedar for a bathroom project by using marine epoxy. Thinking you could use some clear spray enamel to lock it in then protect with epoxy. Don't know if the smooth texture is what you are after, but will definitely lock in the character of the boards. Recommend you experiment to see if you like the look on a scrap piece. Thanks for sharing.
Do a small accent wall in the house with the wood preferably with the chalk high up. A peaked wall if possible. Sand the lower upper and side wood and put a few clear coats on all of it.
To preserve the chalk, I would use a spray lacquer or polyurethane. Use very light coats, let dry and repeat until covered. Of course, test it on a piece of scrap with chalk on it to make sure it works.
It's this one: www.husqvarna.com/us/axes/swedish-style-carpenter-axe/ It's Husqvarna branded, but I seem to remember it was made by Hult Bruks in Sweden. It's a good one.
Hey Mr. Green Jeans and Junior Supervisor !!! "I'm driving the tractor with the blinkers on !!" Is there a way to cut those memory pieces off the main slabs and use them like a "trip-tik" or a "Five tik" several slab pieces wall hanging, or within a special built shadow box or frame? If you could shave off the sides and ends to better finalize a shape ?? Or square them up and use some wood planks for framing as a whole piece to hang ?? Happy Thanksgiving if we don't see you before then. Christmas trees are already up in all the shopping malls in Montreal as of this week !!! And i was in the Dollar Store yesterday and they were playing French Christmas Carols on the Musak !!!! O Boy Already ?? I asked the shop folks how long it would be until they went bonkers listening to that so long before Christmas, and they and I just laughed.
My more observant family members have let me know that the chalk drawing in the video and the drawing in the flashback pictures are completely different. Either way, if you have any ideas on how to preserve the chalk in the new floor let me know. Thanks!
you can use a spray polyurethane first. Once it dries, you can roll on your usual sealer.
Yes ,I think what MamaK65 said or a spray acrylic sealer like Modj Podge would work fine or a spray laquer
@@MamaK65came here to say the same thing

I've missed this content. Love to watch it, but I know it's a selfish desire. Hope seminary is going well for you and that the family is doing well!
Thanks!
Cool❤
You need to add AC and a kitchen to that deer stand so you can feed that boy... He's starvin'.. 🤣
He's got some real first world problems 😂
Thanks for another great video! How long are you back on the farm for?
Back sporadically on breaks and between semesters right now.

Hey Wes! What brand hatchet / axe are you using? looks good and sharp! Great to see you back!
It's this one: www.husqvarna.com/us/axes/swedish-style-carpenter-axe/
It's Husqvarna branded, but I seem to remember it was made by Hult Bruks in Sweden. It's a good one.
Build a steamer and steam the boards. Turn that white sapwood into dark like the heartwood. Less waste. :)
Pekerjaan yg luar biasa mantap 🎉
good job
Wes, The Tannens in black walnut can mess you up respiratory wise wear eye protection also
The lumber pile looks like a good home for rattle snakes.
It is. I ran across one out there just last year.

Black walnut tends to split a lot, the best you can do is get one of the splits into one board, and just get half width boards out of the rest.
Personally, I would use a router or similar to engrave the chalk art deeper into the wood.
Will cedar be too soft for flooring? I've only ever used it for outdoor grow beds, so I'm not sure of its other applications.
Not sure, hopefully not! It's so pretty I hate to not use it.
@@falllineridge Cedar is a beautiful wood, for sure! Smells pretty great also, lol.
Check your saw, should be a line on the clutch cover and maybe even the starter cover that can be used to point the directon of fall.
My son removed my 2 Black Walnut trees in January.... the squirrels were very angry.
