Thank you for putting in the hours you do so we have a constant stream of videos to enjoy. I don't know how you do it but I'm so happy you do. Special thank you to Jessica and Nick for giving you the freedom to do this. I'm sure they would be happier if you were home with them. Another grand video.
-40 on your temp sensor means it's not connected or sensor bad. These have two sensors, one for the instrument cluster and another for the pcm. Also, with this being obd 1, the engine may need to be running for scanner to work. Get the exhaust system fixed, and the bad MAF sensor is causing a lot of your rough idle issues.
Early GM fuel injection is kinda sensitive to some inputs. Check the temperature sensor. Mandatory for cold operation. Also, that engine is hunting a bit. Probably a CPU input issue. Air flow sensor, temp, O2. You are on the right path.
Being a previous GNX owner, seeing this beauty with all of its ailments makes my heart hurt because they are truly a bucket list car, but i know you are willing and able to take on the task. Keep up the great work and give it the life it deserves!
This Grand National is an absolute jewel, especially for what you paid for it. I would lean right in on that Coolant Temp Sensor & wiring. At a reading that low, it’s trying to dump a bunch of fuel & will make it run terrible. Ive replaced a bunch of CTS on 3.8 GM’s, Esp OBD-1 cars. Keep at it though and you’ll have a hell of a ride. Get her right & I’ll bring my 18 WRX down-line em up and have some fun💯
I spent 5 hours on my Cadillac Eldorado-92 today making it ready for the winter here in sweden .Winter tyres flushed the radiator etc its not my winter beater i drive it only when the weather is nice i love the -80 -90:s American cars .the winter beater is of course my Volvo Diesel .Thanks for the great videos
Love your videos Randy and I appreciate you recorded, made the edit and uploaded the video the same day to keep us entertained. I'm from Poland and I love to watch content on cars out of europe, we never had these cars so altough they're mostly old it feels like something new to me. And I enjoy watching american people on european cars, it seems like most of them are like everyday exotics for some people in US while they're everywhere here and everyone drives european cars here, it's quite interesting to see your take on them.
Put your scanner on and check what the parameters are with the oxygen sensors. I was chasing a similar surging idle situation and a hard stumble fall on its face situation on my 93 Chevy 2500. O2 sensor was working, but lazy. New 02 sensor made all the difference!
Grand National = 2024 POWER TOUR car. High confidence you can sort out the issues on this car Randy, it will take a little time but you can do it. Definitely a Power Tour car.
Sorry i didn’t watch yesterday was working! Love that you grabbed this GN! These cars are so much fun. Can’t wait to see you work on it! I like the wheels! Randy i appreciate your patience. You fixed a lot of problems wow!! Kinda surprised it still runs lousy! So appreciate you staying up late to do this video! Hope you got some sleep.
Randy, I have so much respect for you. I always enjoy (and look forward to) your videos everyday. I am impressed by the knowledge you have for fixing vehicles. If I was a friend to you and lived close, I would want you to check my vehicle before I took it to a mechanic as you would tell me exactly what the problem was!
Hello, my wife and myself own one of these cars. Bought new in 1986. After 25 years of owning this car sold it to some guy in Iowa. We Went through 3 turbos and a lot of tires. Bought a lot of parts from Kenny bell. Had the engine rebuilt after around 15 years. Only one person new how to work on my car in South Carolina. Dealers would just scratch there heads. Good luck with your car. They are really a pain when they start acting up. Our car ran rough too when cold.
That OTC tool was very useful back in the day. I bought one when it first came out, I think it was a grand way back then. I still have it to this day and use it every now and again when the oldies come in the shop. I hope you can get it working. Once you have the basics sorted out such as the ECT and a working 02 sensor use the block learn to determine if its running rich or lean. 128 is center with no correction, above 128 is lean adding fuel and below rich subtracting fuel. Of course it will look at different cells depending on load. Block learn is like looking at long and short term fuel trim on an OBD2 system. If its running rick look at the purge valve and see if it's stuck open, I remember changing a lot of those back then. Good luck and keep at it, you will figure it out.
Hi Randy, kudo's to Jessica she was right on the money and truly the voice of reason on this one. I think once you get that exhaust manifold replaced or reworked and the exhaust redone then I think everything will be fine. I think you need to leave the Monte SS stock and then do a few tasteful mods that would increase the HP then with the money you saved you need to find a 1987 Cutlass 442 and a 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix and fix them up as well and then you need to race them, with Monkey Wrench Mike driver and Santa Workshop's as a driver and then you need one more driver who could it be, I think Jessica as the Stig, she wouldn't have to show her face you could disguise her voice and she could be the fourth driver, you of course would also drive. I feel with the right billing and build up it could be epic. See what your video's do I'm giving away million dollar idea's for free, just kidding, I always enjoy your video's and I look forward to the next one, now get some sleep. 😀✌❤
Man 👏🏾👏🏾 Mad Props to You for Going All Night, & somebody was definitely trying to get that Car running right prior to letting it Go! Also try that fancy scanner on the Monte Carlo if it doesn't read that then yeah its no Good!
Randy...I own a 87' GN the first thing that i knew was to bring as much AIR In and then make as much Exhaust Out done correctly 100% u will b amazed what this car can do with just that. Air In Exhaust Out fast as possible. First thing is taking off that crapy hose material connected to the turbo intake and throw out that old busted MAF sensor in the trash and get your self a Cold Air Intake that has a K/N filter. The MAF sensor your gonna have to pay the $$ for a NOS or what i did is get the LS MAF and go that route that is a BIG reason why your GN is running like shit Randy after u complete just that first step then look at cracks and leaks like the one on your manifold and others. Great content Randy can't wait to see next video
Hi Randy my name is Baz I am from Toronto Canada I really enjoy your videos It's really awesome thank you so much for taking the time to Entertaining us thanks for that Randy I have one suggestion please for those side gauges for the boosters I know you want to add one more or two please when you get those get them with the one has a light inside they look awesome make sure the light that inside those gauges matches the dashboard light that will look perfect thank you and God bless
a vacume leak in the intake tube between the engine and the Mass Air Flow sensor will cause a no idle condition, also of course a bad MAF as well. still check that tube for holes and make sure its clamped well
@autoauctionrebuids Way to go Randy! You are on the right path. Addressing your catalytic converter (just run a test pipe if ya want) and that crack on the passenger side header will probably solve most of your drivability issues. Sounds like it runs quite a bit better when up to operating temperature. It’s very common for that drivers side header to crack too. I am glad you found Kirban Performance. They have a ton of knowledge. In fact if your lucky you can call and pick Dennis Kirban’s brain if you get stuck on something. For your OTC you can verify it works on your Monte Carlo SS. I’m sure you’re on it once you get rested up. Oh and for your spark plugs, many say not to use platinum plugs on these cars. I usually just run the plain old AC Delco CR43’s.
I shared this on the last video, the boost pressure should be 17psi, that’s stock, even more with a bigger down pipe and can even get a bigger turbo from Garrett!
Hello Randy. Trying to fix the 1987 Buick Grand National. Good luck on getting the Grand National running right. The smoke machine is just like Mike aka Santa's Workshop has.
I am quite a few years from when I worked on this stuff but I just remembered a car similar to the problems of the Grand National besides the car hauler problem I just commented on. It had the same exact problems as the grand national with the cracked manifold. Down stream from the exhaust manifolds are probably 2 cat. converters and 2 ox. sensors in front of each converter and that side where the cracked manifold is they are thinking very lean exhaust. I put a manifold on that side wala it ran fine. I even think the was not the problem at all.
Randy keep going with the engine. Maybe try the scanner 150 on one of your other cars. Remember there is most likely more wiring issues with the Grand National. Nice video.
$24,000 for a car with problems. That's insane Also the oxygen sensor and coolant sensor alone can definitely cause these issues, but just the crack alone can throw everything off
Casper's ground relocation kit Maybe this should help. From a forum: Since I did my first head gasket job many years ago, I have NEVER replaced the engine harness ground rings on back of the head, it is way too difficult. Since GM installed these grounds on an intake studded bolt at the trans dipstick, I decided to follow their example. :) Just exchange the bolt with a stud from the front of the intake where the factory lifting bracket is mounted as that bracket is expendable, and use that as your ground terminal! :D
Coopercobra tires are great wheels. They handle any weather like a boss plus look great. The 5 stars look great on the grand national with those cobra tires.
Wow. So apparently this car was a VERY beautiful turd, LOL. > This will be exceptIonally great content! I have sorely missed the videos that were chock full of you turning a challenge intro an amazing machine! The Grand National will out-do even the best of your previous miracles ! Randy is BACK, baby!!! This is the Power Tour car!
Make sure your EGR valve is 100% closed at idle (carbon build up) and has no vacuum at idle that will cause issues. Check for intake vacuum leaks 3.8ltr known for them. Good luck
Once you replace the catalytic converter it might not stall anymore. It's not pushing out the air through the exhaust which is building up back pressure
Hi, that was fantastic to watch, and facanating the car is looking fantastic. Keep at it o think it's getting better, but I do think it will be a lot better with the cat fixed and a new manifold fitted , that will help the boost alot, and I live the bew 5 spoke wheels there cool, I look forward to the next video, best wishes To you 👍🚗
I’ve had a temp sensor say -40 on one before and it was a huge problem. Ran like crap pushing way too much gas in the engine. Every since that coolant temp sensors on live data is one of the first things I check . I truly think you’re definitely onto something. That will definitely cause a huge problem. Cheap easy fix but I know you’ve already spent a ton.
Check the EGR. It should be completely closed at cold idle. If not completely closed check the torque converter lockup clutch for engagement above 50mph steady state. The systems are connected in the ECM. a short in one will take out the other.
Hey Randy, I just saw your video on the ground National. It looks like you had a rough night with this car of yours but I hope you get it straightened out. Can’t wait to see the next video on it. I hope you have a good morning a good afternoon and good night. Can’t wait to see you next video. Talk to you later.
Did you look at at the prom chip yet? If its original , guaranteed will cause stalling and poor idle. They were a recall item to get it to pass emission testing and it made it run like crap.
Maybe, that's right things to do: start checking hardest stuff to repair, and then the easyest, because then you know what else could be broken, which is hard to repair, than waiting them to broken soon))
Exhaust leaks at the manifold allow air in as well as exhaust out...the oxygen in the air leaked in messes up the oxygen sensor readings, big time. you can't get it running decent with the leak present. The rattling cat converter isn't helping matters either.

I bet when you get the fuel system sorted out and the MAF issue solved it's going to be good to go.
SO YOU DIDNT FAIL it might still be also the cat is blocked when it gets warm the cat will expand a dit so it might get a better flow and the cracked manifold wont help either both mags are neat the 5 star looks better on that monty but the standard are real neat and suit it best thanks for staying up late to bring us another informative show just love your work well chow mate Grumpy
Oh man i remember i found one of these when i was dumpster diving and it was complete i thought it was awesome had it for a lil then just gave it to my mechanic because I didn't have a use for it 🎉
LegitStreetCars has one and had all kind of problems. He made a few videos fixing it.Maybe his videos can help you and maybe you can get in touch with him,he seems like a very nice person and I have seen him help a lot of people.I beleive he has a lot of knowledge about this car.Anyway good luck and I'll be watching!!!! 👍
You opened the garage door while you had the car running. I am very proud of you.
He's evolving!
I'm clueless about what can be wrong with your car. But I wanna see you operate the smoke machine.
Thank you for putting in the hours you do so we have a constant stream of videos to enjoy. I don't know how you do it but I'm so happy you do. Special thank you to Jessica and Nick for giving you the freedom to do this. I'm sure they would be happier if you were home with them. Another grand video.

-40 might explain the catalytic clogging too - dumping too much fuel thinking it's in warmup.
Randy, it's an awesome ride. Don't give up on it. You have one of the best examples of 80's American muscle. Lovin' it!
Early GM fuel injection is kinda sensitive to some inputs. Check the temperature sensor. Mandatory for cold operation. Also, that engine is hunting a bit. Probably a CPU input issue. Air flow sensor, temp, O2. You are on the right path.

When it warms up, the exhaust crack seals up somewhat. And God no dont change that engine ! Your on your way to it running like a champ.

Cooper cobra tire's are great the hold up well I got my first set at18 and I love the way they wear under heavy wear, good traction.

Looks awesome. Sounds very good at the end of this video. Brings back a lot of memories. I enjoyed video. Thank you, for all your hard work.
Thanks bro. I had the same blinker issues. I thought it was my turn signals. I appreciate the knowledge I’m a new subscriber now.
Love this sort of content Randy. I like your style. Great car
Love the new rims keep up the great work you will get it running right soon
I have new respect for you, pulling a all night'er to get the job done.
a vacume leak in the intake tube between the engine and the Mass Air Flow sensor will cause a no idle condition, also of course a bad MAF as well. still check that tube for holes and make sure its clamped well
That car is boss! She’s a keeper! The car and Jessica!
Reelly like the garage videos you do. Feels like we are there too. TY Randy.

Hello Randy. Trying to fix the 1987 Buick Grand National. Good luck on getting the Grand National running right. The smoke machine is just like Mike aka Santa's Workshop has.
Good Afternoon There My Good Little Bro Randy Lee Shear Auto Auction Rebuilds

From what I remember about grand national it was really hard to work on back when it came out
This is my new favorite channel ‼️
$24,000 for a car with problems. That's insane
Also the oxygen sensor and coolant sensor alone can definitely cause these issues, but just the crack alone can throw everything off
Change the coolant temperature sensor for sure! Should solve cold running issues.
This is looking very fast and furious Randy. Don would be proud of you.
Casper's ground relocation kit Maybe this should help.

😂😂 honestly the center break light flashing with the turn signals is cool

It never easy. But, your doing what you love to do. Hang in there.
I’ve had a temp sensor say -40 on one before and it was a huge problem. Ran like crap pushing way too much gas in the engine. Hey Randy, I just saw your video on the ground National. It looks like you had a rough night with this car of yours but I hope you get it straightened out. Can’t wait to see the next video on it. I hope you have a good morning a good afternoon and good night. Can’t wait to see you next video. Talk to you later.
Absolutely love the new wheels.
Man! Is like looking for a needle in a haystack! Trying to solve them problematic issues! Hopefully you’ll get it done!
Super useful tip here for older cars that use bulbs.
thank you Jessica for checking Randy on the engine swap.
Did you look at at the prom chip yet? If its original , guaranteed will cause stalling and poor idle. They were a recall item to get it to pass emission testing and it made it run like crap.
Good morning. Glad all is good.😊👍
Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan. And randy dude man you like to fix things the same day. Kinda wild you did this. Keep it up randy 👍👍👍
Check your throttle plate to make sure it is seated properly. That might be why you are having issues with the engine stalling out and running rough.
Maybe, that's right things to do: start checking hardest stuff to repair, and then the easyest, because then you know what else could be broken, which is hard to repair, than waiting them to broken soon))
Man you are a car loving guy. Good video My friend.
Original parts group has a great parts catalog for G bodies. They may help you with your parts.
Loved the video and the wheels look great
Very beautiful vehicle! You should definitely do a rear disck brake upgrade ❤
I like them wheels id leave them on it like you said theres certain things that already aint original on it. Looks badass
Exhaust leaks at the manifold allow air in as well as exhaust out...the oxygen in the air leaked in messes up the oxygen sensor readings, big time. you can't get it running decent with the leak present. The rattling cat converter isn't helping matters either.
Those rims you bought for the gran national look great
Great job Randy. Im thinking it’s a bad o2 sensor judging by the look of the plugs. A bad oxygen sensor will throw multiple codes from my experience.
Those wheels look so good on the grand national
Get a Ford engine to go with the Motorcraft plugs....
Kidding, of course. Love the Grand National, the wheels are fine. I'm sure getting the headers and the exhaust fixed will make matters a lot better too.
I like the wheels! Keep going on her!!
I wouldn't change the wheels to cut cost and it looks good. But if you want the national to be mostly OEM then that's up to you.
I like that set of wheels and tires personally.
I am pretty sure with time you will get all those issues taken care of.👍
If the pressure regulator was any indicator, chances are there is crap throughout that whole system on the engine.
Replace the fuel pressure regulator.
Flush the fuel rails and any lines.
Replace the injectors.
I wouldn't say you failed. All of the stuff you fixed needed fixing anyways. It's just a work in progress.
All of those clapped out vacuum lines, plug wires, Motorcraft plugs (WTF????), and that disconnected PCV valve, along with the loose coil packs. It all had to be done.
I bet when you get the fuel system sorted out and the MAF issue solved it's going to be good to go.
Good luck buddy
I would think the same, leave this baby stock as possible, atleast on the engine seems more natural.
And congrats,this car is beautiful.
Ok Randy, you are putting out too many videos for me to watch! 😂 I'll just have to catch up. Great job as usual.
The new wheels are the best of the bunch!
Oh man i remember i found one of these when i was dumpster diving and it was complete i thought it was awesome had it for a lil then just gave it to my mechanic because I didn't have a use for it 🎉
Great video, work and car💪😀
She is running a little better now 😊
Glad to see you getting your hands dirty again
I like the digital gauges on that didn't know they were available
Junk yard digs just done a series on the same model car and had nothing but problems.
Yayyy Grand National content 😀🤘🏽🔥
LegitStreetCars has one and had all kind of problems. He made a few videos fixing it.Maybe his videos can help you and maybe you can get in touch with him,he seems like a very nice person and I have seen him help a lot of people.I beleive he has a lot of knowledge about this car.Anyway good luck and I'll be watching!!!! 👍
The star wheels look great :)
