It is from recording sessions in 1988, three years after The Broadway Album and five years before Back To Broadway. The sessions were produced by Rupert Holmes and the songs were intended for a follow-up to The Broadway Album. But for whatever reason Streisand decided she didn't like what she heard and the album they planned was scrapped. However, bootleg recordings and videotape of the sessions subsequently appeared, and many Streisand fans found the Holmes' produced tracks from '88 infinitely superior to most of what eventually appeared on Back To Broadway in '93. Some of those '88 tracks were subsequently released - Warm All Over and For All We Know on Just For The Record (1991) and How Are Things in Glocca Morra/Heather on the Hill on Release Me (2012). Others remain unreleased. This recording of On My Own is the least impressive performance from those sessions. Streisand was clearly still rehearsing and finding her way into the song, and on the videotape it's clear from the face she makes at the end that she's not at all happy with the take.
I would have loved to have heard the Barbra Streisand from 1966 - 1968 performing this song. Of course, it wasn't written yet, but that doesn't change the fact that I would have liked to hear her younger voice in this.

I agree if it had all the polish of a final product would be sensaational... Ms. Streisand does not sing it like a pop song, which is the mistake so often made. Barbra makes her own of it with her own special inflections.

You cannot compare an opera singer with a pop singer,vocal technique different, opera singers taught to sing without amplification.Greatest singer ever does not belong to one singer, male or female.

Bending those notes, but never soaring, just plain soggy, lacking passion and conviction.
