The problem isn't her; it's the arrangement.

This is NOT an out-take from The Broadway Album. Or Back To Broadway, as some have suggested. It is from recording sessions in 1988, three years after The Broadway Album and five years before Back To Broadway. The sessions were produced by Rupert Holmes and the songs were intended for a follow-up to The Broadway Album. But for whatever reason Streisand decided she didn't like what she heard and the album they planned was scrapped. However, bootleg recordings and videotape of the sessions subsequently appeared, and many Streisand fans found the Holmes' produced tracks from '88 infinitely superior to most of what eventually appeared on Back To Broadway in '93. Some of those '88 tracks were subsequently released - Warm All Over and For All We Know on Just For The Record (1991) and How Are Things in Glocca Morra/Heather on the Hill on Release Me (2012). Others remain unreleased. This recording of On My Own is the least impressive performance from those sessions. Streisand was clearly still rehearsing and finding her way into the song, and on the videotape it's clear from the face she makes at the end that she's not at all happy with the take.

Beautiful vocals of course, but the arrangement belies the despair of the lyrics. It’s a bit too upbeat.

A good rendition and not an easy song to sing.Purely a subjective opinion but I think Lea Salonga sets the standard for this song, her version definitive.Streisand has a nasal quality, probably due to her use of vibrato, not to my taste.I have seen Streisand live, she is a great singer, one of the best, but hyperbole to suggest she is the greatest singer ever, nonsense. You cannot compare an opera singer with a pop singer,vocal technique different, opera singers taught to sing without amplification.Greatest singer ever does not belong to one singer, male or female.

I used to always cut my hair specifically like Cher’s in this era.

Her voice sounds great. This arrangement is absolutely horrible.
