Hi guys. I just wanted to pass on a safety tip. If you're using contact cement I would recommend using a respirator that is designed for chemical exposure (carbon filter). My step dad was a cobbler who used contact cement frequently and ended up getting multiple myeloma. I really enjoy your builds. Stay safe.
Yes, was gonna say something similar- if you soak fabric in water, (not dripping), you lay it over the foam, you can smooth it out, once the foam cures the fabric will peel right off leaving less shaping and smoothing with the rasp to be done
I think I like their videos because it's still pretty quick but they also show the struggles of winging it and attempting different things. Makes me feel more confident to try stuff even if I fail a little 😅
Awesome spider! I loved watching you work together. You remind me of my hubs and myself! One tip: CARDBOARD BOXES! Chicken wire is a huge pain-in-the-a$$! If you just use boxes, you can beat them into shape and even duct tape them together to make as big as you want, then go to town with the expanding foam. We made garden "boulders" this way. One is almost 4x5 feet and everyone thinks they are real! Lots of hit and miss work with paint and shading, but we finally got them to look real. People freak out when we pick them up and toss them around! Great spider...you're giving me ideas! Fun stuff and cheap!
That's a great idea to use boxes/tape for the interior. I hate chicken wire with a passion. And have some sizeable interior plaster sculptures that I'm pondering... might try this approach on a smaller wall sculpture and see how that goes. Thanks for the tip.
You guys have saved me soooo much money when it comes to Halloween decorating! Plus everything you guys make can just plug right into real big professional haunt attractions. SOOOO COOL! An CONGRATULATIONS 👏 🙌 ON REACHING OVER 200K SUBS. You guys earned them. Impressed!
"Saved Money" by the time you spend all that money on the material that they used to make that thing you can buy one, PVC, Chicken wire, Foam stuff, pipe insulation, that stuff is not cheap these days , not to mention the time needed, just buy a fake spider on line, it would just add up to about the same probably cheaper.
just the kind of project im looking to do! ive been thinking about how to make a giant fly for our beetlejuice themed decorations, this hits it on the nose!
I love all your DIY videos, especially this one with the spider. I tried it myself, except I made it white with different fluorescent colors that glowed when I put it outside at night under a black light. It was so awesome. Thanks for the ideas & keep them coming! Cheers, Blake
This is epic! You could, optionally, make it more terrifying if you added noise and/or movement to her, maybe some lights in the eyes too! Great build! I love seeing what you guys come up with and create!!
Your next video should be how you store all of your creations. I'm fighting for space with my wife (she likes christmas decorations) for the ever growing pile of Halloween decorations. If you can find the 3M froth-pak spray foam can be sprayed in much thinner, smoother, and stronger layers.
I agree! I’m in the same battle, but with myself. Ha. I love Halloween & Xmas, & I’m at the point I may need to rent a storage unit. 🤦🏻♀️ Half of our garage is full of decorations, alone. My partner is not too happy, but he doesn’t get much say in the matter. 😉 I would love to know how they store this beautiful creature & if it stands up to time. I worry the body will get damaged.
YES! I’m getting better at considering storage options (like removable parts and attaching with screws or all-thread or slip-on PVC), but I want to make all the GIANT things and am quickly running out of storage space!
FYI: Immediately after covering the surface with foam, take a spray bottle and spray the entire thing down with water. Really get it good and soaked. Within a few minutes it will start to develop a skin. No waiting until the next day, and then having to do a bunch of messy shaving and carving on it. In about 15 to 20 minutes you can literally take your hands and push and squeeze on it, using your hands and fingers to flatten it out and mold shapes into it, and you won't get any foam on your hands because the water causes the outer layer to form a skin. Keep in mind, this expanding foam stuff doesn't dry; it cures, and what cures it is the humidity in the air. The more moisture, the faster the cure. Which is why spraying it down with a spray bottle forms a skin within minutes and allowed you to form it with your hands. A little trick I leaned from Stilt Beast Studios. Here's an example of him making a mask out of spray foam, and how he wets it down and then is able to mold it with his fingers. 🡺 ua-cam.com/video/HlG0I1YPALA/v-deo.html
Finished mine today. Was a really fun project. Pretty much followed your build all the way. Used a heat gun to weld the pool needles. Worked great. A ton of moments where you feel like its going wrong… but then it all comes together! I only found this because my wife bought some of the beef carcass netting to create the web, but I had no idea what to do… so I followed you instructions there, made your hanging egg sacks, and finished with this! Really appreciate the knowledge !
The face doodads are called pedipalps (for the long ones) and chelicerae (for the short ones, this is where the fangs would be if the spider has them). The more you know ;)
Love watching your ideas come to life!!! I'm definitely going to try to make this one! FYI...my grandpa told me, you should always stomp on your working gloves before putting them on, you never know what might have crawled in them while you were away... like a spiders🕷🕸
Wow! Your spider looks amazing! I think the textured foam actually adds to the organic look. I also loved how much fun you had making this… your constant smiles and laughter make this one of my favourite builds. Happy Halloween (or Hop-tu-Naa as we say where I’m from on the Isle of Man in the UK 😄).
You guys are so fun to watch - glad you’re not my neighbors though as you’d be showing me up at Halloween each year big time! Thanks for sharing your skills and fun!
Here’s a trick heat the “insulation tubes” with a heat gun and you can actually melt the tube & it will act as glue onto itself. You can even heat it and manipulate the tubes with your hands to taper the tube. This will work on pool noodles too
Few things they don’t mention. How to hold the spider up. Gotta make a stand for it that digs in to the dirt. I had to put a wooden base under the spider then covered with foam, now I was able to screw on a base to it and you won’t lose it with a wind storm. Legs won’t hold themselves up with that gauge steel. They probably positioned them perfectly with no wind just for the final pic. You’ll need thicker steel (at least for the first segment), and a pvc end cap where you can stick it in to hold it up like a flag pole.
It would've also been cool to see you make a fluffy spider! It would cover the foam texture and there are so many cool colors and patterns of real tarantulas to base it on. plus I feel like I always see faux fur stuff at goodwill that's ripe for harvesting
I have arachnophobia and I 100% know what Jay means, merely looking at close-up photos of spiders make me feel like they're crawling on me! Speaking of arachnophobia, this is an awesome build, scary as hell, 10/10 spooky!
It'd be super cool if you started including a side list in the video or like a pop up type thing of tools and stuff used and then costs/location of the materials you find or buy 🕷🕷🕷🕷 regardless, i appreciate all the links in description and love your videos and you guys
