    Halloween is almost here!! 🎃 We make lots of DIY Halloween Props for our yard haunt and our newest project is a GIANT SPIDER made from chicken wire and foam! Inspired by so many giant spider films and other amazing DIY props, this Halloween decoration is the perfect addition to any home haunt or haunted house. "Gertie" is an easy prop inspired by something between a Black Widow spider, Aragog, and the Boggart from Harry Potter. It's easy to build using simple chicken wire, pipe insulation, and expanding foam that you can find at any hardware store.
    The great thing about this project is that you can adapt these techniques to make lots of different diy halloween props and decor. Using chicken wire as a base shape and then covering it in foam is a great foundation for making tons of different kinds of DIY props.
    If you'd like to make your very own DIY halloween Giant Spider, we encourage you to give this easy Halloween project a try!

    Hi guys. I just wanted to pass on a safety tip. If you're using contact cement I would recommend using a respirator that is designed for chemical exposure (carbon filter). My step dad was a cobbler who used contact cement frequently and ended up getting multiple myeloma. I really enjoy your builds. Stay safe.

    Yes, was gonna say something similar- if you soak fabric in water, (not dripping), you lay it over the foam, you can smooth it out, once the foam cures the fabric will peel right off leaving less shaping and smoothing with the rasp to be done

    • @sheilab3911
      @sheilab3911 4 дні тому

      You mean while the foam is still wet or often it's dry?

  • @pumpkinheadghoul
    @pumpkinheadghoul 3 роки тому +104

    FYI: Immediately after covering the surface with foam, take a spray bottle and spray the entire thing down with water. Really get it good and soaked. Within a few minutes it will start to develop a skin. No waiting until the next day, and then having to do a bunch of messy shaving and carving on it. In about 15 to 20 minutes you can literally take your hands and push and squeeze on it, using your hands and fingers to flatten it out and mold shapes into it, and you won't get any foam on your hands because the water causes the outer layer to form a skin. Keep in mind, this expanding foam stuff doesn't dry; it cures, and what cures it is the humidity in the air. The more moisture, the faster the cure. Which is why spraying it down with a spray bottle forms a skin within minutes and allowed you to form it with your hands. A little trick I leaned from Stilt Beast Studios. Here's an example of him making a mask out of spray foam, and how he wets it down and then is able to mold it with his fingers. 🡺 ua-cam.com/video/HlG0I1YPALA/v-deo.html

    Few things they don’t mention. How to hold the spider up. Gotta make a stand for it that digs in to the dirt. I had to put a wooden base under the spider then covered with foam, now I was able to screw on a base to it and you won’t lose it with a wind storm. Legs won’t hold themselves up with that gauge steel. They probably positioned them perfectly with no wind just for the final pic. You’ll need thicker steel (at least for the first segment), and a pvc end cap where you can stick it in to hold it up like a flag pole.

A ton of moments where you feel like its going wrong… but then it all comes together! Good job on the spider :)
    I started making mine about 3 weeks ago - I tried the chicken wire approach, but it's just super hard. I tried forming a ball for the 'egg sac' bit out of high tensile wire and wrapping it in that black weed-covering material - also a failure. I ended up just buying a beach ball ( like $4.95 for a 36" beach ball) - wrap it in cling film ( saran wrap), spray foam around it, deflate the ball, pull it out, finish the bottom. Worked fabulously. :)

    Awesome spider! I loved watching you work together. You remind me of my hubs and myself! One tip: CARDBOARD BOXES! Chicken wire is a huge pain-in-the-a$$! If you just use boxes, you can beat them into shape and even duct tape them together to make as big as you want, then go to town with the expanding foam. We made garden "boulders" this way. One is almost 4x5 feet and everyone thinks they are real! Lots of hit and miss work with paint and shading, but we finally got them to look real. People freak out when we pick them up and toss them around! Great spider...you're giving me ideas! Fun stuff and cheap!

    I've wanted a way to build a giant spider that was also easily stored for a long time. This is perfect. I hope I get a chance to try it sometime.

    So we aren't done yet but I have a few tips to others so far.
    1.Buy the 12 spray foam cans. You will need them.
    2.Definitely will try what someone suggested in the comments to wet the spray foam once it is starting to dry, to mold it instead of trying to shave. The shaving works but It was quite a workout, and not the fun kind.
    3. When connecting the legs, apply the rubber cement AND LET IT DRY before trying to stick the pieces together. I've watched this video about 30 times while working on our spider and I never caught that line. I was frustrated and completely covered in contact cement trying to get the leg joints to stick. I almost decided to go a different direction, until I watched the video one more time and caught that very important line. We painted some on waited 3 minutes and 30 seconds and then it sticks together no problem and holds tight. Ill be picking contact cement of my hands all day today (which is kind fun) but if you want to save yourself a big hassle, definitely don't miss the "LET DRY BEFORE STICKING" part.

    Came out awesome! Great tutorial. FYI, pool noodles are more of a dense foam so they hold up better to things like heat guns and normal wear and tear. Awesome result though. I would have loved to see a red hour glass and a cacooned victim close to its chelicerae (mouth).

    8:50 🎶 There once was a spider, put together by a team of 2, called the Wicked Makers, they called her Gerty, short for Gertrude, but once she betrayed them both. Soon may the spider brood come, to bring us horror, treason, and doom. One day, when the destruction is done, we’ll take our leave and go… 🎶

    You know, if you went with a layer of the seal and fill stuff they make for people who want to go over brickwork or similar, you could get a more smooth look as well.

I also loved how much fun you had making this… your constant smiles and laughter make this one of my favourite builds. Happy Halloween (or Hop-tu-Naa as we say where I’m from on the Isle of Man in the UK 😄).

    i try not to use this kind of foam, but it brings a very good structure in this case. i don't know what the harmless alternative for environment is, especially when planning so big and even bigger surfaces.

    A yoga ball and one bouncy ball that you see all the time at Walmart would be perfect forms and if you do it with the chicken wire, plastic wrap, and ducktape it would be easy to take out the balls and reattach the seams.
