Love your Elvis reactions. What I like about you, is you seem such a calm, sincere and onest person. By the way, the photo journalist Ernest Whitters, who documentied 60 years of afro american history in the segregated South, said - Elvis was a good man. He did more for civil rights than people know.

Elvis' heart was in gospel, and if you're drawn in by his other stuff, and become a big enough fan, you'll eventually find yourself there. He always wondered why he was so blessed, and I know he was no angel, yet I think he served God's purpose well in bringing people together and taking some places they've never been, and never expected to be, which is, face to face with Jesus, not through preaching, but through song.
It was his tribute to Dr MLK and Robert Kennedy who was also assassinated in 1968 … He never sang the song again it was his thoughts & tribute to both men…They wrote this song in one night it wasn’t planned .. He sang it more than once on the 68 Comeback special that’s why he is exhausted at the end…Elvis was a very spiritual man who grew up singing gospel music as a child…People were all equal to Elvis people didn’t see this side of him… I remember the day he died it was very sad …16th August 1977 at the age of 42 …This is why he was called The King in my mind he still is …19th September 2023…

Elvis took a hell of a risk singing this song at this particular time. This was his Comeback Special. He’d been making movies for 8 years straight since he served in the army. Nobody knew if people in 1968 would still accept him as a stage performer. Tackling such a controversial issue at the time and taking a stand on it was incredibly brave. His manager wanted a Christmas Special, not this and threatened to sue him. Elvis fought back and won.

Elvis wrote that song and sang it as a tribute to MLK two months after he was murdered . He and Elvis were really great friends and both wanted all brothers to walk hand in hand in peace !
You should react to the two part documentary "Elvis and the Black Community." It shows the truth about Elvis. He grew up with
black friends cause they were his neighbors in Tupelo, before the family moved to Memphis.

Elvis’s voice was a combination of different genre. He was inducted into five different music Halls of Fame. He has a very varied catalog of music. Check out American Trilogy. The band is amazing.
Elvis never met MLK but he listened to his messages on the radio. Elvis grew up poor with the poor community and that included the black community and he never ever saw them as different from him. He and his mom attended a black church while his dad did prison time out of the same desperation as the ghetto. Tho his crime minor today, it was considered big back then.
You can hear his Gospel and Blues influences so clearly.
His backup singers the sweet inspirations said they cried hearing him sing if i can dream. They were quoted that they never heard him sing like that ever. They were so moved.

This song was written for Elvis, after the assassination of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy and all the terrible things happening in the world ( especially here in the United States) and hopes that we a all could/would care about one another, love, respect and treat each other with decency etc.

This song was sang in regard to the assassinations of Robert f Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The white suit symbolized hope the Red scarf was the blood of the soldiers lost in Vietnam. Elvis was advised not to sing this this was supposed to be a Christmas song but Elvis defied them and said he was going to sing it anyway. This had a lot of meaning to Elvis he left his heart and soul on the stage that day. And yes I know this because I was there. RIP to the King 👑

Kennedy was shot in '63; producer-director Steve Binder, along w-Elvis & others w-them watched the news of Robert Kennedy's assassination on the TV news the night it happened, & because of that incident the song came into being; see "Gates of Graceland: Secrets of the '68 Special" + the many other videos w-Binder regarding the coming together of the special AND the reason for the song.

Fifty years ago, on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was standing on the second-storey balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was gunned down by a sniper.
Only 39 years old at the time, King had, in the eight years that preceded his tragic death, transformed the American civil rights movement. It became a national crusade that inspired people from across the social spectrum and turned long-neglected economic and racial injustices into major political issues, not just in the United States, but around the world.
As a social activist, King’s greatest moment came in August 1963, when he helped to organize the March on Washington.
More than 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to protest against segregation and bigotry, and King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
Written by academics, edited by journalists, backed by evidence.
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I have a dream’ speech.
In the months that followed, younger and more militant members of the civil rights movement grew increasingly frustrated with King’s caution and his commitment to non-violent resistance, but King pushed on. And in the aftermath of his assassination, millions of people paid tribute to his courage, his eloquence and his determination.
Elvis Presley was one of them. He recorded the song “If I Can Dream” just two months after the murder, and the emotional intensity with which he delivers it still brings back the shock and grief that gripped America in the wake of King’s murder.
Presley was just six years younger than King, and both were born and raised in the Deep South (King in Georgia and Elvis in Mississippi), where they were surrounded by institutionalized racism.
King was not a great admirer of rock ‘n’ roll, but Presley greatly admired King, who was killed less than nine miles from Presley’s home at Graceland.
Presley was unable to attend the funeral in person as he was filming Live a Little, Love a Little, one of his many movies. But according to his co-star Celeste Yarnall, she and Elvis “watched the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. together over lunch in his trailer. He cried. He really cared deeply.”
A few weeks later, Elvis began to work on the one-hour TV show now widely known as his ’68 Comeback Special. Filmed in June and airing in December, the show was originally scheduled to close with Elvis singing “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” a plan enthusiastically endorsed by his Machiavellian manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
But in light of King’s assassination (and, as production of the show got under way, the murder of Sen. Robert Kennedy on June 6, 1968), Elvis balked. He wanted to conclude with a song that reflected his deep sadness at the racial and political strife dividing the country.
Steve Binder, the director of the Comeback Special, agreed. “I wanted to let the world know that here was a guy who was not prejudiced,” Binder declared, “who was raised in the heart of prejudice, but was really above all that.”
Binder and Elvis were able to outmanoeuvre Parker, and for once Elvis got to sing what he wanted to sing. The Comeback Special closes - unforgettably - with “If I Can Dream,” written by the vocal arranger Earl Brown, and performed by Elvis in a white suit standing alone in front of large red letters that spelled out Elvis.

‘Why can’t my dream come true?’
King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is clearly Brown’s inspiration for the lyrics of “If I Can Dream.” Freedom, promise, redemption and darkness are at the crux of both, as the speech is variously echoed, adapted and rewritten in the lyrics.
King’s image of “a great beacon light” reappears in Brown’s reference to “a beckoning candle.” King’s “solid rock of brotherhood” corresponds to Brown’s vision of “brothers” walking “hand in hand.” King’s “sunlit path of racial justice” prompts Brown’s invocation of “a warmer sun / Where hope keeps shining on everyone.”
Above all, of course, both King and Brown “dream” of a better, more equitable society and future, though King’s optimism (“I Have a Dream”) contrasts sharply with Brown’s tentativeness (“If I Can Dream”).
Faced in 1963 with bigotry, gun violence and police brutality, King remains convinced that “somehow this situation can and will be changed,” and that “my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Brown struggles to be as confident. Confronted in 1968 by the assassinations of King and Kennedy, his lyrics - unlike King’s speech - are suffused with “doubt and fear,” though he maintains that he is “sure that the answers gonna come somehow.”
King did not deny “the difficulties of today and tomorrow,” but he had the courage to imagine a better world in spite of them, and had already spelled out the cultural, legal and moral changes that needed to take place in order for us to create that world.
In response, Brown asks the most pressing question of all. If the example of King enables us to “dream of a better land,” and if we and millions of other people believe in that same dream, “why, oh why, oh why can’t my dream come true?”
Still, we dream
Brown’s lyrics are an impassioned reaction to the devastating news of King’s death, but it is what Elvis does with those lyrics that transforms “If I Can Dream” into what is, I believe, one of the most moving tributes ever paid to the bravery and vision of King.
For the first time in almost a decade, and for one of the last times in his career, Elvis is singing - and knows himself to be singing - a song that matters. His voice is full of raw emotion that seems at times almost to overwhelm him, and that drives him in the bridge (“the strength to dream”) and at the climax (“right now”) to an intensity that approaches a scream.
Before us once again is the angry, urgent, anti-establishment Elvis who exploded onto the American music scene 12 years earlier, and who now, at 33 years old, closes his Comeback Special by honouring the country’s greatest Black leader.
Less than a decade later, Elvis himself was dead, and while “If I Can Dream” has been recorded by several other artists, and included on a number of different Elvis compilations, no re-mastering or re-release can replace the power of the song in its original context.
Martin Luther King, Jr. urged us to dream. After his assassination, Elvis hopes that we still “can dream.” The death of King half a century ago reminds us of how far our society still is from the equality that King imagined.
As his words continue to inspire us to more unified and purposeful action, especially in the current political climate, so too they inspired Elvis, and the trembling, soaring voice with which he sings “If I Can Dream.”

Notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, Brown wrote the song as a response to the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, which had happened a few months previously.
Knowing about Presley’s fondness for both men, he wrote "If I Can Dream" with Presley in mind.
I get goosebumps every time.

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis’s love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination. Just 9 miles away from Graceland (Elvis’s home). Elvis sang this song only twice ... when he recorded it and at the end of his '68 Special. After the show ended, Elvis dropped to the floor and cried for a long time. He couldn't take the fact that JFK and MLK were assassinated and shortly after RFK. That got to him so much that he couldn't sing it again. Very emotional for him. Also, it was not by chance that he wore that outfit ... white for hope and the red tie/scarf was for the blood that ran.

Those were tough times , racism was in its hight and Elvis was very brave by singing this song nobody wantwd him to do it, but he did.People of his entourage told that he cried back stage after this. Not many singers had the guts to do it, Koukklowx clan was much strnger than nowdays.

Elvis was such an amazing performer, his outfit was specially chosen, the white suit to express peace and the need for peace and the red scarf was to signify the blood spilt in pursuit of rights. It so refreshing to hear someone say they want to inform themselves and actually dig deeper. Elvis is often accused of stealing the music of the black man, but if you look at what he did in 1956 singing the music he grew up with and the influences of blues, gospel and country all combined, he was forging a path for others to walk on. So many black singers could not get played on radio or appear on TV, until Elvis broke down the door. He was ridiculed by the establishment and he took a lot of heat in his first few years but it did not stop him and he remained true to his convictions. When Elvis went to Texas in 1970 they said you can not sing on stage with the Sweet Inspirations as your backing singers because they were black, Elvis response was if the Sweet Inspirations can't sing then I don't sing. Elvis was humble boy from Mississippi who never forgot his roots to the day he died. Thanks for the reaction and i look forward to seeing more.

The red tie was in reference to Vietnam and the war going on there (all of the bloodshed, that's why he chose red), also it was a tribute to Robert Kennedy as well as Martin Luther King as he was also assassinated that year!
