Man this video is a time capsule. I was stationed in Atsugi during the mid-2000s and the base was basically the same in this video, other than the NEX improvements. Thanks NAF Atsugi for keeping this video up

Was the kid of a navy family there in 06-09, and yep. This is exactly how I remember it.

I was there Dec. 1961 thru Dec. 62. Was an opener for a 19 year old from St. Louis. Remember the practice air raids when we had to go into the tunnels that were dug by POW’s. It was quite an eerie feeling. Semper Fi.

Was stationed in Atsugi from 1988 to 1998😮AIMD, VAW 115, and NAF Security 😊that’s how much we loved being there. One of these days, we will go back to visit, and remember our time in a great duty place.

I was stationed there from 1979-1981 and we did not have any of this. But I would not trade my experiences there during the time I was there for the world. Met some great people there.

Was there in 1950's. It was totally different. Binjo ditches and a few bars. Lots of farms around the base. Saw a U2 pulled out of the hanger and take off for the north zone. Good times.

I was at NAF atsugi back in 1982 to 1985 and It seems to have completely changed. We had 3 people to a room back then, now it looks like single rooms? And a waterpark? Wow I kind of wish I could be stationed there now. I worked as an AT3 in the AIMD. The only new thing i remember getting back then was a Mcdonalds.

WOW! I was stationed at NAS ATSUGI from December 1967 to December 1969, it appears they threw away my base and moved to a Newer Bigger base since then!!! The only thing that looks familiar is the Tower and the Base Insignia!!! Much nicer digs!

@guideonshortie The main exchange and the home store had another upgrade last year. The main NEX is probably twice the size it was just two years ago. The plan of the project is help sailors by providing more stuff so that they do not have to travel to Yokosuka to get what they are looking for.

You guys live in your own world, despite having bases in Japan. It's so weird.

I was stationed there and I remember the Exchange being upgraded :) Too bad the White House is gone but the park looks nice though.

You need to talk to your sponsor or talk to Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) regarding your BAH and housing arrangements. If you don't have a sponsor get in contact with your command.

now i was wondering as an e4- over 4 getting stationed for shore duty in atsugi do you get sometime of bah like i do in the states... one thing i dread is getting a small barracks room on base.. Is there some sort of program to get housing outside of base?

Sure has changed since I was there in 57-59 ! I was assigned to VU-5 and did time at
Itazuki on Kyushu in a small detachment.
Wonder if Sagami Otsuka still exists...ha ha ! I remember it took me a few months to get thru there and on to Yokohama !
    Lots of good memories
