  • Here is the cavatina "Fac ut portem" from Rossini's "Stabat Mater" sung by mezzo-soprano Nan Merriman. This performance was the final event at the Florence May Festival in 1952. Antonio Votto conducts.

    "Fac, ut portem Christi mortem,
    passionis fac consortem,
    et plagas recolere.
    Fac me plagis vulnerari,
    fac me Cruce inebriari,
    et cruore Filii."
"Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.
    Wounded with His every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned,
    in His very Blood away;"

A most valuable addition to Nan Merriman's only Rossini recording, the "Otello"scena, in spite of the rather dim sound. I wander what she could have done with Isabella in "L'Italiana", especially the ironically sexy "Per lui che adoro"!
