Troyanos was one of my greatest mezzosopranos. Her timbre, her technic and her legatos were so beautiful. There is one recording of Massenet's "Werther" with her and I think this is the best and most impressive Charlotte (including her pronounciation) I ever heard. Unfortunately she had a sad and too early ending. I will never forget her.

Absolutely marvelous! Every note is tack on. The coloratura is seamless and flows gracefully to achieve a thrilling auditory experience. This is a difficult aria to sing; I doubt any mezzo could sing it better.

I'm so old. I saw this, live, at the Met, in this, the first production. It may not be the greatest Verdi opera, but it's certainly one of the longest. Yes, it is excellently done. Troyanos does a wonderful job. Would you expect anything else from her? But so does the disgraced James Levine. And so does Betsy Norden, who seems never to forget that she is playing a part. I'm a theatrical director, by the way. You can look up Deloss Brown and see why I have particular prejudices. I'm very glad this is on line, and I look at it often. It's perhaps my favorite piece of Verdi. I'm a Bach-Brahms-Wagner person.
It sounds to me thar Troyanos have difficulty in combining "chest voice" with the upper range, and she usually gets stuck in between, with a sound that lacks "purity".
Those lower coloratura runs that weave around the lower passagio would be IMPOSSIBLE if she had trouble knitting her registers. But as you can hear, she had no trouble at all, speed, accuracy and warm, sensuous tone. I heard her live many times - she was one of the greats!
@@brunnhilde7193 100% agree. As a dramatic mezzo myself I will also add that doing runs like that spanning a couple of octaves means you absolutely have to keep it light in the chest voice
Verdi was very bad for writing this role as Eboli, not only for the vocal quality. Giuseppe had written 3 Opera to arrive at the perfection of Don Carlos
