Mit eleganter, glasklarer und göttlicher Stimme! Ingeborg Hallstein, eine der besten Koloratursopranistinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, was die Bundesrepublik Deutschland je hatte wohlgemerkt.
megadim Yes, love her in the Barber with Wunderlich and Prey. Also, a favorite is Rita Streich. There a many wonderful examples of this clean, light articulate coloratura but Hallstein just never ceases to amaze me, also she is a charming actress. Nothing vocally or dramatically forced.
Just listen to her enunciation, her crystal clear diction and pure tone, no affectation, no innaturally darkened vowel modification, just her medium register testifies her greateness, even without her transcendental agility and easeness in superhigh notes and staccati!!! She's one of the best. PS note the accurate descendent triplets in the duets with the barber (Whose Ones are terrible by the way)
The most beautiful voice I ever heard/die schönste Stimme die ich jemals gehört habe. No other female singer pronounces the words so clearly that they are understandable. Keine andere Sängerin singt den Text so verständlich wie sie. And who will ever reach the clearness of her coloratura !!! Und ihre Koloratur ist unerreicht.
Most German speaking singers from the 1950s to the 1970s sing with very clear diction. Hallstein is not special in this respect compared to her contemporaries, nor the best. Margit Schramm (1935-1996), for example, had crystal clear and precise diction, and was the best operetta soprano of the time, in my opinion. Great coloratura singers are plenty: Erna Berger, Renate Holm, Erika Köth, Marta Eggerth, Gitta Alpar, Wilma Lipp and many more, each with fabulous technique and individual style and charm. Who is the best is a matter of personal taste and opinion. The same goes for beautiful voices: Erna Berger, Renate Holm, Kathleen Battle ... and the list is endless. One thing is certain: all the sopranos mentioned above had a much longer career than Hallstein, i.e., much greater vocal longevity.
Compared with other sopranos, Hallstein’s vocal career was very short. From her mid-30s her voice declined clearly and rapidly, and by age 39 her voice was ruined forever. (Her membership at the Munich State Opera ended in 1973, age 37.) The few recordings she made in her early 40s were just awful. On the other hand, most other coloratura sopranos continue to maintain their vocal excellence and technical brilliance well into their 40s, 50s or even later. Erna Berger, Marta Eggerth, Renate Holm are especially outstanding in their vocal longevity. I think it must be a technical issue. One of her former students commented that the technique she learned from Hallstein caused great damage to her voice. Erika Köth once said that one’s voice is not full before age 30, and therefore encouraged young aspiring singers to develop slowly. In Hallstein’s unique case, her best recordings were all made before age 30, and from age 30 started to decline. In many of her TV appearances from the 1970s, the singing is dubbed with a recording from the 1960s.
@@megadim713 It is a pity that this happened. This is probably the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Can I read more about her case somewhere else?
I have seen criticism of her in various languages on various websites. There is nothing beautiful about her voice from her late 30s onwards (especially from 1975 onwards). It is airy, hollow, coarse; painful to hear. A few years ago I bought better sound equipment at home. While most singers sounded better with the new speakers, Hallstein actually sounded worse. The airiness, typical of her later recordings, became noticeable also in recordings from the 1960s. It is a fundamental flaw that worsened steadily with time. Hallstein studied only with her mother. If she had worked with other voice teachers as well, they might have been able to correct some of her problems. For beautiful voices, try Erna Berger, Renate Holm, Edith Mathis, Kathleen Battle, Regula Mühlemann and many more. They definitely had better technique as well. Erna Berger was tremendously esteemed by her professional colleagues. The conductor Furtwängler considered her the best German soprano, and the great coloratura soprano Erika Köth always regarded her as her foremost model. Erna Berger had a more beautiful voice at age 80 than Hallstein at age 40.
@@megadim713I guess I should have said I can't find many available for purchase. I can't find her mozart concert arias available, or an album with gilda, lucia, zerbinetta, all on one cd etc...
No, they only recorded highlights, as was common at that time. The LP album is 53 minutes long, and is called a "Großer Querschnitt". I present here the best of Hallstein's amazing singing in that album.
