My son has ADHD and autism and my 4 month old daughter is hard of hearing so one ear doesn't work and one does but when I sing them this they both calm down and enjoy the beautiful meaning of the song . This song also helped me growing up because both of my parents aren't around for me and I felt so small , so alone, and so dark .. this song saved me . Thank you Cyndi

My daddy and I saw her 10 rows from the stage a couple years back. He’s now battling cancer. Every time I hear this song, I can’t help but cry. I love him so much. He was so scared to come out to me, thought I would hate him. I told him I see his true colors and he’s the most wonderful man God ever made.

This song reminds me so much of my former self covered in wounds, fueled by anger and resentment, and very cold and reserved and indulged in two addictions.

I myself have high-funtioning autism (Auspergers syndrome). It's been a rollercoaster, to say the least. But it puts me in direct line of fire for narcissists due to narcissists unwillingness to accept they r wrong if they can't at least blame being wrong on someone else. Autism causes social problems in the form of missed social cues. Seems the more high-functioning, the more likely missed cues will b sexual. But that means it isn't cuz a guy is scared to have sex. It's literally failure to recognize even some of the obvious cues. Even despite that my son turns 20 on Sept 24 2024. His mother verbally made clear what she wanted. The new DSM calls auspergers and also pervasive personality disorder as well as autism, autism spectrum disorder, bc narcissists being wrong is turning the US into declining Rome. And y the 2020's r totally the Orwell novel, "1984."

We pile so many falsehoods on top of our true, beautiful souls, so that we can make ourselves into a version of our self that we think we need to be in order to be accepted by the rest if society, and that false self takes so much effort to keep up and needs so badly to be validated by others. All we really need to be is who we truly are - the loving child that was born into this world. This, is perhaps part of the re-birth that Jesus referrenced - being reborn as the free, loving spirit that came into this world, before the world convinced us that we needed to be something else to be deserving of love.

To me, I think that this song has an emotional message to it. It makes me think of the saying about true beauty: "It's not what's on the outside that counts, it's what's on the inside." My mother always tells me that I'm perfect the way I am. I have Asperger's. Sometimes, I'll even cry telling myself that I'm not beautiful, and I'll even say I'm fat. But my parents, say I'm beautiful and perfect just the way I am. My sister, Ariel finally found her true love at the age of 21, his name was Scott, and she got married to him at 26. He's my brother in law and he's super sweet. I have a boyfriend named, Ricky, he's also a sweetheart to me. We haven't been communicating together because of COVID-19, but he always tells me that I don't need to wear any makeup, I'm beautiful without it. I can't wait to make it through 12th Grade, and walk across the stage as I'm graduating and seeing my parents cheer for me. I'm in 9th Grade now. I'm a Freshmen. But what I can't wait for in the future is.... The day when my true love and I will have a wedding and we'll live happily ever after. That's when I'll know if he will love me always and forever, and never let me down. When I reach adulthood, I wanna make a perfect marriage for us, my sister has one with her husband Scott. I really ask the question: Why does plastic surgery exist to make yourself beautiful, when you should keep yourself the way you are?
I know it has been a year but i feel like that sort of thinking doesn’t go away that easy so i wanted to give you an answer.
The reason that the beauty industry is so big is because our fears are just as big and we live in a world that profits from fears. Fears motivate you. Like a lot. You choose the wrong life partner because of a fear of being alone. You dress up and wear make up because your fear not being enough. You choose your career because you fear letting your parents down. You get yourself in debt to buy a car, a house or whatever it is because you fear that you won’t fit in if you don’t act like everyone else. We are sort of blind to the fact that fears keep us in chains. The people who profit from our fears however, are quite aware of how things work and keep spreading the message that we should be afraid and buy their product or service because it supposedly is the only thing that will fix the problem. It is not. If you want to fix the problem, understand why you fear the things you fear, and then understand why it’s pointless to fear said things. You’ll find that understanding and letting go of your fears will make you beautiful like no amount of plastic surgery, make up or whatever bs they try to sell you could ever do. It’s not about looks. It’s never about looks. It’s about confidence. And i know it may sound like i’m just saying that to make you feel better but it is the absolute truth. I once had a friend who was not the prettiest girl around. She was very cool, but not blessed when it came to physical beauty. Still, she was so incredibly confident in herself that she was extremely attractive. When she danced, every guy around couldn’t help but looking at her because she owned every bit of herself. I hope you somehow were able to let go of some of these fears from the time you commented until now, but if you haven’t, know that you can, and that it will be the best investment you’ll ever make in this life!

Even if they do not tell anyone, they feel within themselves as a “real man”. But it’s not only that. There’s also the fact that most people at a certain age feel like they are lacking something in their lives. They have the job, the family, the house but that nagging feeling is there. Some go after excitement, and an affair, the having to keep it hidden provides that excitement. Which is the reason a lot of married men refuse to leave their wives when their mistresses ask them to do so. It’s not that they don’t love their wives. It’s that they feel the need for excitement and unfortunately, not many couples can keep the marriage exciting. Look, we as a society are far from understanding how the world works. We as people are far from understanding how we work. We do stupid stuff all the time. Some of us learn and correct our mistakes, some of us go all in an loose it all. I’m not excusing anyone. There are plenty of women that feel the same need for excitement and find some “bad boy” to keep things interesting. You could say that men are doing it in higher numbers but maybe women are just more discreet. After all, they do notice when something is not right so it’s also easier for them to keep things from not looking right. No one deserves such a thing though but it’s just a part of who we are right now and it takes personal growth to overcome such things. Men for instances generally feel like they cannot express their feelings as they grow. And when grown they do not even know how to do it if they had to. Besides expressing anger which is supposedly a manly thing, they cannot tell their wives they feel like a failure despite having everything society told them they needed to be successful men. It’s a lot more complicated than i can express on a UA-cam comment but hopefully there’s enough information.
And assuming your profile picture is yours, then you are certainly not ugly. Sometimes it’s not our fault. Sometimes we are too much for those around us. And unfortunately, those with confidence to approach us are those that have no clue what they are doing. Like a kid that goes confidently to stick their fingers on an outlet. Were they aware of what they were doing, they would not do so. So, the loosers that keep showing up might just be analogous to those kids 🤷♂️
Still, that “i’m doomed” mentality certainly does not help. If you are always expecting stuff to fail, it will certainly fail. “Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you are right.”

Billy Steinberg explained : “One of the things that one contends with as a songwriter is that when an artist records your song, unless you’ve […] somehow involved in the production, you have very little input into how the song’s being arranged and structured. Sometimes an artist will copy your demo exactly as you present it. That would be the case with ‘Like A Virgin’ or ‘Alone’ […]. In ‘True Colors,’ more than any other song, Cyndi Lauper came up with a very, very creative departure from our demo. The demo was sort of rooted in the gospel ballad tradition of a song like ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ [1970], ‘Let It Be’ [1970] or ‘Lean On Me’ [1972], that sort of thing with a piano. Cyndi completely dismantled that sort of traditional arrangement and came up with something that was BREATHTAKING AND STARK. Tom [Kelly] and I were both elated when we heard her record of it because it was so much more ADVENTUROUS than our demo, and to her credit, she produced it and did a beautiful job. That song, more than any other song I’ve written, has had tremendous life. I guess more than any other song that Tom and I wrote, that one SEEMS TO HAVE THE MOST UNIVERSAL APPEAL.”
