Then low and behold....people get pissy and an altercation begins. You don't need to skate in mall's or on car hoods or on someone else's property to be a good skater. Wtf does one think is going to happen to them if you start zipping around the busy mall on your board and doing tricks on mall benches and rails?!? Security will intervene and even strangers will too. Complete captain obvious moment there. Mosy of these skaters make everyone look bad, plain and simple.
Guys dont forget that its easy to stay calm and talk without swearing when you are the one damaging someones property... Of course the skaters will be calm about it because they dont care, but the guy that had to repaint it 4 times and skateboarders still come is not going to be calm about it... It makes the skateboarders look good but things would change if someone calmly grabbed kids skateboard and started destroying it, then you would see that the skateboarders would get all aggressive too.

A skatepark IS a public place BUT the people that raised the money and use it (real skaters) take it for what it is, a sanctuary for skating, bikers, roller bladers. Because we aren't welcome anywhere else.
