The Quadrajet to Edelbrock carburetor swap - step by step

  • Replacing my old Rochester Quadrajet with an Edelbrock 1406 carburetor. This is a 1984 Chevy K20 3/4, just a yard truck for plowing my property. The old Quadrajet got gunked up from a broken fuel filter so I decided to try swapping on this old Edelbrock. I had pulled this Edelbrock off an El Camino with a 305 I had about 10 years ago and it has been sitting since. I popped the top and cleaned the inside, also flushed the passages with carb cleaner. Seems to run well.
    The Edelbrock 4bbl is not a direct bolt on to the stock intake manifold. It has a slightly wider bolt pattern and the shape of the openings is different. To facilitate installation I bought the Edelbrock adapter kit model 2696 which was less than $30. It includes the adapter plate, two gaskets, and mounting hardware.
    I also purchased for about $8 the Edelbrock 8009 throttle cable adapter kit which allows the stock GM throttle cable to interface easily to the Edelbrock caburator armature.
    The biggest adaption here was the fuel line. The Rochester Quadrajet has the fuel filter in the the front of the carburetor and is fed by a metal fuel line that threads in there. The Edelbrock's fuel inlet accepts a rubber line and is on the side towards the rear. I cut my metal fuel line and attached a rubber line to it with an inline fuel filter to the Edelbrock 1406. This seemed to work very well.
    I had to extend my PCV hose about an inch. This was easily done by cutting it and splicing with a piece of metal tubing. The brake booster vacuum line on the rear of both carbs is identical and required no modification. Same with the distributor vacuum advance, same location on both carburetors.
    Parts Used:
    Edelbrock 2696 adapter plate kit
    Edelbrock 8009 throttle cable adapter
    Rubber fuel line
    Inline fuel filter
    Hose clamps
    Tools:
    Flat head screwdriver
    Phillips screw driver
    5/8" tubing wrench (fuel line and brake booster fitting)
    1/2" wrench (carb mounting bolts)
    3/4" wrench to swap brake booster fitting
    Something to cut fuel lines with

    Edelbrock makes a "Performer" Quadrajet replacement that is an exact fit spread bore so no adapters etc. Those are about $400 and work almost perfect right out of the box. Not the budget route but for a replacement idea likely the best. Those Quardrajet carbs are rebuildable, not everyone is good with them however, and they will give the best overall reliability.

    Quadrajets are great carbs when they are new and/or working right... However as a mechanic I mostly saw them when they were old and crusty and no longer working right. We used to call them Rottenchester Quadrajunks. I LOVE the AFB, Carter/Weber/Edelbrock carb. My first experience with one was a old Carter AFB that had been mounted on a Ford small block in a boat. The boat had sunk, the manifold (with AFB on it) was left sitting outside for YEARS. I pulled the carb stuck a carb kit in it and slapped it on a crappy running C10 that had a worn out Qjet on it, the truck ran GREAT after that! I couldn't tell you how many Quadrajunks I have replaced with them since then.

      Quadrajets are awesome carbs if you,or a mechanic,are good w adjusting them. If the people workin on them are junk,then that's where the quadrajet gets their name

      @@M4MED86 They are good but are much harder to tune than the Edelbrock in terms of being as easy to take them apart plus they are a little easier to get jets and tuning parts for over the quad and it's easy to get either the tuning manual or the PDF to tune them for your needs or for Dyno purposes while it's a little hard with the Qjet. The other thing is the Quadrajet is also known for those crappy Welch plugs in the bottom of the float bowl that have lead plugs in them that shrink over time just like mine are doing now and other quads I had many years ago which causes a flooding after it's been run and warmed up good and that flooding also washing the oil off of the cylinders walls which isn't good either ! I like them when they work but once they hit that tipping point of leaking fuel and the throttle shaft bushing go bad they suck and that's what I like about the Edelbrock they don't have those Welch plugs below the fuel bowl to leak and usually don't unless you got one that was a bad porous casting that got by inspection ! Really the best way to fix those plugs is to drill them out then thread them to use set screws cut down then use some permatex cylinder liner adhesive that's commonly used on diesel engines with cylinder liners to help hold them in so those damn pesky set screws won't ever leak or come loose like the factory lead plugs do but most people either don't know how to do it or it's just not worth the time to do it and just buy another carburetor instead lol . I am throwing on a Edelbrock today until I can take a closer look at my old Quadrajet because it's been leaking fuel and I think the bushings are gone now because the idle is up and down at times but hey it's been on my 400sbc for 20 years in 2 plow trucks and had been good until recently now that I built a new plow truck that can be driven anyplace now so it's had a lot of sitting time outside although I would start it every 2 weeks just to throw a charge to the batteries and keep the fluids moving and carburetor wet so I can't really bitch lol.

    I know there's people out there with their own preference. i understand that,but the ol' cliche of swappin a QJet w an eddelbroke or a holley is just that...a cliche. QJets are great carbs if you,or a mechanic, understands them. I had the same QJet on my truck for over 13 yrs and it did good,until a "new school" mechanic that "knew what he was doin" messed it up. Since then,i had another QJet(period correct)rebuild by someone who knew what they were doin and w the regular half pump of a cold start,it fires up in bout 2 secs....and that's w temps bein in the low 30s. Supposedly they did some upgrades to the inner low speed circuit to improve throttle response . I have had a few of them through the years & not one of them ever gave me problems unless it was one I got that sat for many years with old fuel in it that caused the accelerator pump to get hard & shrink . They are supper easy to work on rebuild & tune but for all out drag racing your better off with a Demon or Holley double pumper race or Dominator just for the fact that they can be tuned more than any other carburetor out .

    Those little glass fuel filters are dangerous. I was working on my carb with the air cleaner off and it coughed up fuel and started a small engine fire. Before I could get it out the heat cracked the glass fuel filter and sprayed fuel all over causing a huge engine fire. I almost lost the whole truck, the engine bay was a right off. Where does the vacuum line from transmission hooks to?

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 4 роки тому +1

      To the vacuum port in the front that has constant vacuum or you could hook it to the vacuum port on the back of the intake as well like most are from the factory but just remember that for the modulator on the trans it has to have constant vacuum or it won't shift correctly . 1 port on the front is full vacuum & the other only pulls a little vacuum just off idle & the one that pulls less vacuum is used for the vacuum advance on the distributor .

    pls answer the question about what happen to the vacoum lines

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 5 років тому

      He hooked all of his vacuum lines up other than the vacuum advance line for distributor advance ! He didn't show hooking up the brake booster but did show the fitting he used for it on the back of the Edelbrock ! I think most of the emissions lines were gone like the vent line from the tank that goes into the charcoal canister then from the large vent tube from the old Quadrajet down onto the charcoal canister that gets filtered and goes back into the gas tank originally but being i see he used a old boat gas tank he has no way of using that stuff ! On most of these old square body trucks that stuff has been deleted by someone at one time because those charcoal canisters would go bad and either plug up or leak fuel and they are kind of hard to find now so most people just delete them although I think LMC truck sells them and all the fuel and vent lines for them ! All you really need is the vacuum line for the brake booster hooked up unless you have hydroboost power assisted brakes that use the power steering pump to run the hydroboost for your brakes and then of course your pcv line to the pcv valve in the valve cover and your advance line coming off of your distributor and it should run just fine if it's in a good state of tune ! Make sure to use the small advance port on the front of the Edelbrock that doesn't have continuous vacuum sucking air as that will cause your advance in the distributor to be at full advance causing it to start hard when hot so use the one side that had no vacuum at idle for your advance ! You can tell which one will have constant vacuum by pulling the plug off of it and can probably hear it sucking air but if you can't hear it put your finger over it to see if it's pulling vacuum or not ! If it had nothing at idle that's the one you want but check it by either using your finger or a vacuum gauge then give it just a little throttle and then it should have some vacuum pulling to operate the vacuum advance like it should ! Just remember if you also have that advance hooked up to full vacuum all the time it will also tear the diaphragm in the vacuum advance and cause the vacuum advance not to work and a slight vacuum leak because they aren't designed to be at full vacuum all the time especially if it's a old distributor that has seen a lot of use which makes the diaphragm weak after years of use being it moves in and out with throttle movement and of course the amount of vacuum the engine is making at different rpm's ! I am doing this same conversion today on my 82 K10 that had a 400 sbc that the Quadrajet has finally gone bad ( leaking throttle plate bushings which cause erratic idle and the welch plugs under the float bowl area the lead plugs have shrunk so once it gets hot from running then shut off they leak fuel into the intake causing it to flood once you go to start it right after so it's time ! I have used these Edelbrock carburetors on quite a few different cars and trucks through the years and they have been pretty good very easy to work on and tune if needed infact I have a 750 cfm on my mild 9:1 build 440 Chrysler with a 509 lift cam headers and a performer RPM intake and it dynoed out at 530 HP with some minor carb jet swaps and timing adjustment done so I am completely happy with them although for all out drag racing or racing in general you would be better off with a Holley double pump or a Barry Grant Demon that's tuned and set up for your engine just for that purpose of racing being double pumps usually don't work very well on the street unless in a manual car or auto with a high flash speed torque converter then properly set up with the right power valves and correct pump shot cams and jetting to get them to work well on a street car the other draw back is fuel mileage will suffer with a double pump as well so on a mild street car vacuum secondary carbs are the way to go if you want to sacrifice some performance and better fuel economy ! Hope this helps lol the only reason I was on hear was to see how he had his throttle linkage hooked up being I couldn't remember if I needed that adapter for the throttle cable to attach which I think I have a extra in my Edelbrock parts stash lol !

    Q jet is a better carb.the price of an ederbrock carb would pay for a quality rebuild,throttle shaft bushings and some tuning is a better overall with good throttle response.the double booster primerys are superior to the other carb
