After spending a small fortune at the Harbor Towne Marina we decide to anchor out at Lake Sylvia near downtown Ft. Lauderdale for almost a week while we wait for our service appointment. We're surrounded by beautiful homes, there's a nice breeze, it's quiet and MOST importantly: there are no bugs!
We're just getting the hang of things and there's no doubt living on the hook is going to be our preferred cruising lifestyle. Of course we still have a ton to learn...and that's pretty apparent!

    Mrs. Wynn,
you are one tough LADY. Owning a boat myself the fifth time I launched the dingy from the back of our Chris Craft I did the same exact thing being way way over confident in what I was doing. I rope burned my palm and four of my fingers. GUYS if you do not know nylon rope burs are way worse then hemp or twine rope burns this is man made material and as such slices the skin which causes deep burns in no time at all.
Mrs. Wynn I have a lot of credit to your being able to keep your pain and temper in check I honestly think anyone myself included would have lost total control and said a few words more than likely to peel the varnish off the wood accents. Deep Deep respect for your strength ma'am.
    Ben

Originally, I was one thinking, ok, let's hoist some sail and head for our first destination. Then you had subsequent vids (tour, noted the insurance issue and a desire to take time to, pardon the pun, learn the ropes.) you have stuck to your plan and I am loving it. You actually are teaching others what it entails (and the complexity) to go to the store or navigate waterways. Keep up the great story telling and filming. Rock on you two!

the next time you have any type of burn...rope or fire, grab that ice pack you put into the cool bag and hold it on the burn until the HEAT goes out. Every 5 minutes or so, remove the cold pack and see if the spot "heats back up". If it does, put the cold back on it. As long as it's heating back up, the skin is still "cooking". If you will keep it cold until the heating stops, you may find you have no burn at all. I learned this working in a commercial cooking, after I splashed 350 degree grease on my arm.

Yep, as a medic one of the first things you are taught about any burn is to stop the heating process. Ice, COLD water or similar. Then cold sterile dressing (gauze soaked in cold saline solution). Don't use burn creams or lotions. Most just prevent the burn from healing Aloe will help (you can buy it OR grow it) but again use it after the burn stops.
Being that you two plan on heading out to sea, I would highly recommend you find a basic first aid/CPR course. AND put together a good first aid kit, mount it right on one of the bulkheads so it is easy to access. As for the expiration dates, unless the item is opened or has been exposed to extremely high/low temperatures most items will be OK for far longer. Get some instant cold packs as well. Faster, cleaner and better than ice.
Fishing wise, check to see if that reel is braid capable, then load it with a good braided line that falls on the upper side of the rods rating. Then set the reels drag so that you can pull the line off the reel at 2/3 of the lines rating. Then learn to play the fish until you can land it.

Amazing to see your early sailing videos that show how two, commited-to-adventure, intelligent and skillful people who work and play well together can so quickly progress from painful, newbie errors to the pleasure of being masters of life at sea.
Helpful reminders for all of us who are hard on ourselves when we err: Celebrate your successes and failures; both required great courage. And from Catherine the Great, "I beg you, take courage. The brave soul can mend even disaster!" No braver souls ever existed than the two of you ... Wishing you a lifetime of smooth sailing and many more satisfying adventures, Nikki and Jason🤠

It’s 4 years down the road...COVID is rampant...not seen the beginning videos before....a superb treat!
You two have entered a journey that will change lives of others on boats and far away places you’ve yet to encounter and just don’t know it yet.
Your encouraging others to expand their lives....and how to do it, regardless of experience. You can always learn.
Nikki, sorry about your “mistake” but it’ll be one of many any every one of us has or will mess up...just say...coulda been worse.

You two are one cool couple. I love how respectful and kind you are to each other. You guys are living my dream perfectly.....actually, you are probably living it better than I would.
Nikki is really tough......she continuously pulled on that fish laden line until it reached its tension limit or fatigued and snapped! Then she turned around and showed us how well she can take severe rope-burn pain on four fingers. With a winch system like that, you can bet that other's have done the same wish-I-had-a-do-over thing at least once. She has a brain that learns well so that won't happen to her again. Thank you for another excellent video!

Lavender oil is great for burns

    • @mkcoxon1
      @mkcoxon1 8 років тому +2

Ointments like Neosporin aren't recommended for initial burn care. The oily base tends to keep the heat "in" which causes more tissue damage and pain. There are some over-the-counter creams & sprays but speak with the pharmacist if you have questions.

First let me say I absolutely love you guys. Second I would like to recommend a product that is the very best I've seen for burns...it is almost miracle like! Foille. It's a bit hard to find but always keep some for burns or even small abrasions, insect bites etc. I've used it all my adult life (64 yrs old) and can personally testify that it will take the pain and misery out of the worst of burns. Keep up the great story......when I found your videos I went back and watched every single one up till now. BTW, I just thought of a couple of things that I learned back when I learned to sail way back when. 1) Don't trust jam cleats and especially those latch type. You always should have a regular cleat backing them up. If you get hit by a wave at the wrong time, you could lose your dingy. 2) There is no real reason to take a line off the winch unless you are going to use the winch for something else. Keep a turn or two around the winch and the line won't run free if the cleat fails or you untie it by accident.
    Good luck!

Hey guys, as a sailor for many years, I have experienced a rope burn or two. Your hands can also feel the "bite" of a line when it is wet. I reduced the burn risk by always wearing sailing gloves when sailing, docking, mooring, or anchoring. I have found the open finger versions work great when temps are hot and full gloves are good in the cold. The gloves have leather that provides some protection from speedy line. Having gloves on also is a subliminal reminder that your hands are involved. Doug on Westsail 42 S/V Harmony

We spoke at length regarding the Nature's Head a while back. You were wondrously helpful and much thanks! We installed 2 on our boat and absolutely love them. Are you guys considering installing them on the boat now? Even though you are new to boats, I know you realize the stinky problem of carrying sewage in a box in any vehicle!!! We eliminated 4 through-hull fittings (potential leak source), many feet of 1.5 in hose and two 35 gallon "honey pots". I know you have a lot on the surveyor's list, but the Nature's Head works great on board! Doug on S/V Harmony

I think its great that two young people like yourselves can afford to take on the cost of the vessel such as you have. Hopefully you have maintenance skills as their will be many many things that need repairs and shop time and marine mechanics are extremely expensive. Another comment is that I think it takes an extreme amount of braveness to take on sailing of this size vessel with little to no experience that I am assuming. I have followed SV Delos since they began posting and have seen what they have gone though. May you be bless with fair winds and calm seas.

Poor Nikki. try soaking the bandages in warm water to make removal easier. Then be grateful for the fact you won't have scars. That could've been much worse. I love Jason's curly hair. Tfs

I know this is an old video, and you folks have likely learned more about fishing by now, but in case it helps: fishing is sometimes a waiting game--the purpose of a rod and (spinning) reel combo is to "fight" the fish without ever brute-forcing the fish; you win when the fish tires enough to get it close to the boat with the *proper* reel tension. I was pretty worried when I was watching you reel in, but not hearing your reel give any line when your rod was bending so much, and then sure enough the line broke. It's crucial to set your reel tension properly (the knob on the top of the spool), so that your reel gives line both before you exceed the test weight of the line, and while your rod still has a bit of give. Thank you for letting us follow along!

Fished all my life. In Florida there are numerous toothy critters swimming about. They are extremely capable of biting through or abrading the line. Solution 1) fluorocarbon leader -it's clear and sturdier then normal monofilament. Better yet Wire leader it's if they are really toothy ..it is sold in various lengths with loops and snaps on each end. Finally set the drag so the fish can never put its full 'shoulders' against you.. The idea is to exhaust the first and not rely on the line.

Thank you for this video! I really found it informative. I have often wondered what life would be like living on a sailboat. (Dream of Antares 44i) I really am enjoying your sailing series. Also it is nice to see the cats. We have 3 rescues in our house currently.
Please keep up the great work!

From the looks of that rain poncho, I think you guys are in need for a day of sailing gear shopping^^ I'd recommend Musto, a little pricy upfront, but they will last for years as long as you take care of them^^

you really should have a well prepared 'wounds and burns kit'. Know that there are several levels of self-care as a cruising sailor including 'day', and 'week', and 'longer'. So you need to prepare to deal with wounds and burns for a whole day until you can get back to port, or a whole week, et cetera. The kits are sized and filled accordingly. ALso augment them with such ayurvedic meds as arnica oil, and other TCM wound treatments. Arnica oil can also be used as a 'licking calmative agent' for both small kids and dogs, though i don't know about cats. This means just that though, a small touch on the skin to be licked off is how it is dosed. On skin for burns no real limit.
Like my old Pappy used to say "y'all are gonna feel a fool if, on a week long cruise in the tropics, you cut yourself shaving and die cause you didn't bring any antiseptic".

Lol! You really need to be careful with lines and winches. Boating can be dangerous. I've been living onboard for the last 16 years in Miami. Hope to see y'all sometimes. Now be more careful! Good luck! Really enjoying your transition. Funny, I ordered a Newmar, should be ready in a couple of months. I'm going the other way. Y'all are in for some really special moments. Cheers!

For the rope burn I would try vinegar (a mild acid-the best for bad sunburns feels cool to but wear swimming googles to protect the eyes) or old home made lye soap (caustic - might burn a bit), that should remove the damaged skin and cauterize and the pain should be gone immediately. Best of luck!
Love the videos guys, thanks for making them! :D

Owie !!! There’s a bandaid called “Mole Skin” used for blisters. I think that would work just fine for a rope burn along with a spray can of cooling pain relief like Biofreeze or ICY Freeze. Soccer dad...what can I say 🙂. Thinking that they should be part of the first aid kit. Happy sailing ⛵️

Back in the 90's buddy of mine stitched some Velcro to his winch covers (the top of them) and then the back of his gloves had the softer side on them. He would put the covers on then attach the gloves to each (2 winches = 2 glove hands). Never forgot after that. Not that it helps now but it's a little creative sailor trick that at least now more people are aware of. He also used the Velcro on the gloves for other stuff. But I don't remember anymore. It's been 2 decades..

Ouch. I too never forgot my first rope burn while sailing. It happened during a tack. I didn't let go of the rope fast enough and in an instant I got a rope burn right across all four fingers.
