Yeah; you'll notice that he didn't use the Bear Grylls firestarter on any of the tinders that he lit with the Lightning Strike. And when he [patronisingly] got the youngsters to use the ['Awesome'] Lightning Strike, each of their fires had the suspected cotton wool ball soaked in accelerant to get them going. I use an ordinary Swedish firesteel and have Absolutely No trouble lighting any tinder with it.

I agree with all of the previous comments about the failure to adequately and fairly demonstrate the other products. I don't think that you tried very hard to use them in the manner that they are intended to be used. The $60 price tag is outrageous. If you're using the huffington post, (which is a mainstream media source), for credible and reliable information, then you simply aren't trying to do any real research.
O.k. If you're into what the BSA has to offer it's cool but I don't care where this info was received, when it comes to any organization doing what the BSA has done(defend it if you will) I would choose to have nothing to do with it. As for this clip using the uniform in a manner their not supposed to, is all I agree with you guys on. Peace Bro.
Brilliant intro! Great that it's a Father-Son operation. Thank you! Additionally, you've hit upon one of the key issues when attempting to start a fire in the wild....cold, numb hands which have lost much of their ability for fine motor skills, and / or injury, the cold being more common. If you can't work your fire starter in such circumstances, it may as well be a useless talisman. Your design at least gives you a fighting chance.
I just sat and watched a ten and a half minute commercial... something I would never do unless it was interesting and informative, which it was. This is a very good idea who's time has come. I wish you all the best with this purposeful and practical product.
Thank you for your feedback and please feel free to leave us a review on our Lightning Strike Fire Starter Facebook Page!! We hope you love the product and get tons of use out of it!
+Sleepy Fred I call bullshit haha that was well biased how he did it he knew there was nothing wrong with the bear grylls one so he purposely didn't try and get the fire going haha
I love this thing! I just ordered my second one. I have a dedicated one in my hiking pack, and now another one for my BOB. I spend 4-5 days a month in the woods, hiking/camping/woodworking. This is the BEST firestarter complete kit I have ever had/seen/used! And at only $60 bucks! That's cheap. Thanks for reinventing the wheel on this one boys, it's a masterpiece!
Love the product. Love more seeing someone prepare a safe fire area, by clearing the ground before building a fire. Glad to see the Shots are still teaching right.
That is one HELL of a product! We have quite a few ferro rods... but NOTHING starts a fire like this item. Extremely well made as well. Thanks for the thoughtful development of this fire starter!
Looks like a great product that will help folks who are not experienced or that are handi-capped! Any product that comes along and has obvious advantages is a good thing! Well done and a great video.
Best fire starter I have ever seen. E X C E L L E N T design and functionality. And a great demo video too. I'm convinced via the Lightening Strike as well as by your character and integrity. Many thanks and ... kudos.
one of the reasons that you think that other fire starters are bad is because you push the striker towards the tinder, and not pulling the ferro rod away from the tinder. the ferro rod is not supposed to stay in place. and the lightning strike is pretty much a ferro rod in a tube, which can be built at home
Hello Darrell, My wife bought one for me for my camping trip with my class. This summer we're going camping in the mesa. You wasn't joking about when u said anyone when a child could use it. You can add even a visually impaired person could use it. My wife said that you sell a smaller one but for the same price. But anyhow I took my lighting strike fire starter to class and everyone I've shown this to loved it, the only thing that was stopping them was the price. Good job and I'm going to make a video on it, (when I can get the wife to help me out with the video making).
While researching available commercial "fire starters" I found this UA-cam video. I believe Mr. Holland presented his product in a professional manner (just as his competitors have done on this forum). What surprised me were the comments! I ran a bicycle shop for a number of years. During that time I had clients that would buy a Shimano Acora group set for $149.00. Others would buy the Shimano Deore XT group for $535.00. Sure there were some weight and quality differences. However, both sets provided the exact same function. It boiled down to personal preference. Entrepreneurial profit is compensation for the expertise and successful effort of a skilled businessperson. Mr. Holland set his price point, and that is certainly his prerogative as the inventor. Mr. Holland's son achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and clearly provided input during the development of this product. As an aged Boy Scout, I appreciate his presentation in full uniform. He is proud of his accomplishments (and so am I). BSA would be hard pressed to get better advertisement. With that said, I drove to TKR Outdoors in Winston, Oregon and purchased one of the units for $60.00. I have used it, and it does exactly what the video shows. I like everything about it, and will likely buy more for gifts.
Would recommend making bottom of handle end flat beginning at base of cap to the end of tool. This way flat surface can act as a way to single handedly prop it up at an angle like a branch so it cannot roll when striking.
This is a great piece of equipment, built well and will serve me for years. I see a lot on here saying "matches in a ziplock" or "buy a lighter". I will tell you that you do not want matches in the rain and lighters can leak or the gas in them can evaporate (Zippo). The price is the price and everyone has to decide what they can afford. I know what I can't afford.... to have my fire starting system fail me when I need it most.
Soooo. Was searching UA-cam looking for a good firestarter. This looks nice and simple to use. Then I went to the website and seen the price. You guys must be off your rocker! I'd pay at most 20-25$ and that's pushing it. Thanks for the idea though, can DIY this very easily :P
I use fire rods as my primary fire starting method. I had to really convince myself $40.00 was worth paying for a fire starter. I bought it & have not regretted my decision. Dealing with Darrell & his staff was like dealing with old friends. They answered all of my concerns & questions. Practiced at home. Took it to 9000ft outside of Grand Junction CO. last October. Four inches of snow & standing water, constant 15 knot wind with gusts up to 25 knots, Day time temp was 40degrees. All down & standing fuel wet. I used the Lighting Strike to start three fires over two days. First fire two strikes. Second & third fire, one strike each. Dropped it in the mud, did not phase it.It focuses the spark right to the tinder.
Just wanted to give you a quick update. My special edition came in literally two days after I bought it off eBay and I am just so impressed with the quality and design. As a survival instructor only to close military friends in the BSA I always encourage redundancy in water purification, fire, shelter and food procurement and only endorsed standard butane lighters, the Blast match, wet fire tablets (because one tablet could fit into the handle), petroleum jelly products with cotton and piston starters as they could work with grass and char the cloth. In my humble opinion, all other man-made strikers were inferior. After being frustrated with many types of tinder on the market, I found that you’re provided tinder is simply excellent. My problem was that I pulled all the discs out of the fire starter and cannot put them all back in the way they came due to your highly compressed method of packing these tinders. By no means am I complaining I am simply ecstatic with your product but just feeling my age. In the six years of Boy Scouts leading to my becoming an Eagle Scout as well as 22 years in the Army being trained by our militaries finest, I must say that this is one of the most efficient and essential fire starters I’ve ever had. And the same eBay purchase I ordered 4 pounds of magnesium shavings and found that just a small ping-pong ball size of the shavings struck by your striker from approximately 4 inches away burst into flames lasting well beyond my time of burn expectations. I highly recommend that viewers purchase some of these magnesium shavings because if you’ve ever tried scraping magnesium from those poorly made Chinese fire starters you’ll know that even with a lighter, they are useless for the amount of effort put into scraping magnesium. I added these two items to my survival kit and wanted to say that I wish I had this back in 2008 while in Pakistan. In reference to the price, I totally understand the other comments. However, I humbly believe that a few are going to spend $800-$5000 on quality black rifles, sniper rifle systems, hundreds of dollars for bug out bags for each member of the family, get home bags for the workplace, a high quality off-road vehicle, water purification devices and ammunition, why not add this starter to your kit? If you want the best you need to suck it up and pay for it. God bless and keep up the great work Jamie Juhl( MAJ, U.S. Army ret.)
It should have a 360 swivel on the flint stick like the blast match for even striking distribution. That would greatly increase the life on the striker.
Good product. That's the first thing I thought also was that he didn't try too hard with the others, so that didn't prove much. It is a great product because it directs the sparks better, it is also great that it holds tinder, and the tinder holder with string is a great Idea so I also thank you for that tip. But like others said, is too expensive, I would make my own out of aluminum pipe or old aluminum flashlight before I spend $60 on it. The most I would pay for your fire starter is $25, maybe $29.95 tops. Then you'd get some noticeable sales. Not everyone would spend $29, but some would. Don't get me wrong, it is a great product but price range has to be more realistic. If a major company was to market this for you then retail price would be greatly reduced. Thumbs Up On Video & Product.
It's a shame I cannot get one. I live in the UK and this would be ideal for all my kids as a young person's bushcraft starter kit. My eldest daughter(14) will be going on her first trek out in the wilderness and this piece of kit would be ideal. Nevermind, I will keep an eye open for when you can eventually ship to the UK. A very impressive invention. Keep up the good work. Atb - Chris
Better to let her learn how to do it with a more minimal piece of kit. This looks very handy for base-camping, but if you're going farther out and size/weight is a concern, a smaller ferro rod is a better choice, since you can store them on your knife sheath or around your neck.
Great job engineering this firestarter. The price is on the high side but the quality and reliabilty looks really good. I'd buy one at that price and maybe another for my son.
I will use my GobSpark Armageddon over this any day. It is the best ferro rod I have ever used and because of the large diameter of the rod it will last your lifetime. You can buy them up to 1/2 inch wide. I notice in the video that when he compares the strike of another rod, he barely strikes the other rod in an effort to make it look far inferior. If he wanted to he could have made that rod perform much better than that.
I agree. I can buy 4 GobSparks for the price of one Lightening Strike. If you want to carry tinder, use a $2 waterproof match cylinder or a ziplock freezer bag.
Actually, they have them as much as a full inch in diameter. Those just don't have a handle. I won't knock the man's ingenuity though. Would I buy this over a Strike Force? No, I wouldn't. In fact, I would not buy this over the firesteel he was disparaging in the beginning. Especially since he was intentionally scraping it wrong to make it perform badly.
This is a good product. 60$ is too high though. A regular rod is not that hard to use and you can get several for 60$. But the lighting strike is also a good and useful product. I think that maximum profits will come when the price range is set around 23$. Or 38$ in certain retail outlets with good packaging.
Not that you may ever leave the lower 48 stay in warm dry climates but butane start to gel in the negatives so you might want to invest in several different ways to start fires. I've had several butane lighters break in my clothing, bags and other gear. The more ways you know how to skin a cat the better off you'll be. I would just humbly suggest that you invest in more than just lighters and matches and work on your woodcraft and bush craft skills. a $20 fire starter and a $24 type water purification straw can go a long way. God bless and be safe. JJ
Really? I am pretty sure you will use up your lighters and matches before you use up your flint. I'd rather have 100% reliability with a little practice over convenience and less skill. Don't get me wrong, I have those in my fire kit as backup. A vaseline cotton ball or some fat wood and a flint and your good to go.
+Remo Peretti Please do get me wrong. I think the tool is amazing. And I can agree with the idea of a little higher cost of the tool due to it's function. But $75 and even $60 is way over the top. It's a metal rod and a striker. You can take the Flintstones car and put a rolls royce body on it, but in the end it is still a Flintstones car.
+Mark OnTheBlueRidge You're right, I don't know what the cost of bringing this to the public was. So let's just say he sells, 10,000 of these. That's 750K. Would that cover the cost of the intro? Let's say 20,000. That's 1.5mil, is that enough? My point is that it is a ferro rod and a striker. It points the sparks toward a given target, but if a person knows how to start a fire, this is plain and simple, too much money for too little product. He shows how to start a fire with one hand. Well, that same thing could be done with just the rod and striker. You're paying a heck of a lot of money for a plastic holder.
Thing is. Anyone can sell anything for whatever they wish to sell for as long as someone is willing to pay it. That is the cost for whatever it is. If he don't sell enough the. He have to lower cost. If they price gets so low then he wouldn't be doing again. Basics of supply and demand.
+James G lol I also was perplexed by the choice of words. The entire sentence was just awful. "Speaking of kids, let's go over now and watch.... some kids... that we've grabbed off the street with very little outdoor experience." I guess we should be happy they were freed from his basement for a while?
Nice piece of gear; I admire your entrepreneurial spirit in designing and bringing this fire starter to market. I expect I'll buy one in the not too distant future.
Looks handy, you should sell it to Walmart for a lower price and you will make a LOT more $. The key is marketing it to places like Walmart, REI, and Big 5. Sure you'd have to lower the price, but in the end you'd make a LOT more $ because you'd sell a much higher quantity.
This is a great design. I can tell thought went into the production of it. However, I do agree with some; that it is over priced. Thank you for taking time to explain and for the video. Hope you have success!
+Nico4387 Nope... Coz myself being a Product Designer, I hav commented for the Design & Innovation only.... I do understand Price of the Product is even one of a major factor for its success which every Designer should Brainstorm upon..... though three thumb Rules are substantially important while Designing a Project are ...Design which looks Good, Design which is Economical for the Masses & Design which is Safe to Use +++++
Notice the sparks that continue burning on their own for a few seconds, that is magnesium. The more magnesium the better the spark, but the faster it wears away.
The reason people use traditional firesteel is that it is traditional and won't brake. If i need something like " Lighting strike " i would just get a Zippo instead.
Of course the other ferro rod won't work as good until you scrape it a few times to get the smooth part off. Once thats done it works great. Yours was already flat from lots of use. Not really a fair comparison. But don't get me wrong, I think yours is much better because of the tube that directs the sparks. Very pricey though!
I have used more strike sticks than I can count and more brands than I care to admit. I think I'd still reach for this before I grabbed another piston starter.
The idea of concentrating and directing ferro sparks through a tube...that's brilliant. I also like the idea of the hollow handle to store tinder. Very nice idea. However I do question the $60 price for the thing. In my opinion, the value of something like that is no more than $40. But the market will ultimately decide how well it does at it's current price point.
one observation...the set screw requires an allen wrench. set screws can work them selves loose. do you carry a set of allen wrenches in your survival pack? change it to a flat head or include the allen key with the product. otherwise it really is a better mouse trap.
Looks like a pretty handy all in one, although I have to say looks as though you purposely made the Gerber ineffective by not using the striker properly. That's all I got.
Very impressive self-contained unit. Makes me wish I did more camping. :-) I may get one to have for my survival bag anyways. A bic is only so useful. Good luck to you and your family in their endeavors!
i have the bear grylls fire starter(not the one in the video) it stores tinder also in a waterproof compartment, it cost me $13 and makes HUGE sparks..60$ is nuts for this.
in my experience having a burred 90 degree angle on a striker makes all the difference when firestarting, ive used the cheapest nastiest steels to good effect with a decent striker.
It looks great! Shame about the negative comments on here. Not sure I can get one so easily where I live, but I will have a friend buy one for me. Thanks for the fun video...
The tube really channels the sparks well. It is a great idea. Just not wiling to spend that much. He is striking the normal rod improperly. Although you have to admit, his product does throw a very good and focused spark
I knew I recognized the voice and face! Sir! You are definitely a trusted man in the industry! BTW I am the officer on the right side of the pic Semper Fi
Yes sir we are working on it! For now, you can find us at most hunting and fishing trade shows and big outdoor industry events or you can order off our website!
Your product design is good. You have addressed the things that go wrong with these. I have watched hundreds of times boys scattering their tinder when the striker hits the tinder. Your product fixes this. Also the bungie holding it all together is a good idea as I lost my ferrel rod one evening in the dark around the campfire. Tinder storage is good. I enjoyed your video. We camp and backpack all year around and have for over 20 years at least one event a month. IF you can get walmart to market it and drop the price down to about 30.00 you will be rich and we will have a good value product. I like quality and well thought out products.
The Lightning Strike seems amazing and I'll definitely be adding one to my pack. That being said, you didn't have to dumb down the BG fire starter, lol. I have one and I've started plenty of fires with it and it sparks a lot better than you were getting it to, though still not as nice as the Lightning Strike. Great product!
I was driving in Tates Hell Florida which is basically a swamp and wetlands doing some fishing. When I made a turn I ran right into what I thought was a mud puddle but turned out to be a 6 foot washout. Needless to say I was 20 miles in the woods and had no cell phone service and it was getting towards dark. I had no choice but to stay with my truck in case someone came looking for me. I managed to gather up some firewood and whipped out my trusty Lightening Strike. I had never used it before and I was able to lite a fire with two strikes. I was amazed at how easy it was to generate a spark. I spent the night in the swamp but thanks to Lightening Strike I was protected with fir and light.
Jim C. Well BUBBA, I have lived in PA, as a matter of fact i have been all over this country. There is nothing in PA that is even near as compatible as the swamps in the Florida Panhandle, but you wouldn't know that city boy. And secondly it is you who came here running off at the frigging mouth. Do you have anything better to do in your pitiful life other than accusing other people whom you do not even know of being a liar. go away and play with your puppy city boy..
Quote:: .. I managed to gather up some firewood and whipped out my trusty Lightening Strike. I had never used it before and I was able to lite a fire with two strikes. ... SO lame ass dude, if you have never used it before, how it can be trusty lol,I survived Bosnian war , was for months at the time in the mountains, and i was able to make fire without such high price gadget, butane lighter was sufficient, 60 bucks, do you know what 60 bucks is. Go back to that same place you had that mishap and stay there and hope no one finds you.
LOL, you the man, you survived life.. hmm, If by any chance Einstein was still alive , your statement above would be his biggest challenge to interpret. P.S. If by any chance, you had an IQ, (im not saying that you do) it would be lower than your room temperature on a winters day .
To those of you who think a bic lighter will do the trick, try using one that's wet or in freezing or windy conditions, you will find that they are useless. Any knowledgeable outdoorsman or survivalist uses a more reliable fire starting tool.
***** what if your bic de pressurizes in your pocket because the button was pushed down? if you are saying you only rely on a bic lighter you are no woodsman, or no woodsman with knowledge. two is one, one is none. dont rely on one thing, especially not something that can fail. and as you said in your post they can fail (albeit you can fix those failures they do not ALWAYS work).why would i rely on something that could possibly fail?
the classic "its a hipster thing" that one i personally like. im just saying that what was implied with what you said was that you should only carry a bic lighter. now that isnt a good thing to tell people, if you also carry stormproof matches and various other forms to make a fire than say so. two is one, one is none. when i was less experienced in the woods i would have trouble getting a fire going, yes even with a lighter because it failed me and i was not experienced enough to know how to fix the problems that were occurring. just to say that a bic is going to always work is stupid, you yourself pointed out a lot of flaws in the premise of ONLY carrying a bic lighter. and thats what i was getting from your original post. just because you can fix those problems does not mean those problems are okay. if bic lighters work under any condition than why do we have firesteels, matches, waterproof matches, stormproof matches, and many other forms of fire making. i agree that a bic is the EASIEST way to start a fire, but like you said they can work under any condition with proper knowledge. i just do not think its a good idea to advocate that people should only carry a bic. thats just me personally. and the thing about a gun, you can very easily bring up other things that are not relevant. like if i bought a new backpack and said my back pack was the best pack ever. even thought the strapped failed, well i duct taped it. the pack cover wasnt waterproof, so i waterproofed it. the shoulder straps were uncomfortable and the adjusters slipped often, so i bought new ones. we can always fix problems that occur but that does not fix the fact that they did. thats the point that i am getting across. just me personally, i wont rely on a bic. and you cna if you wish, or dont. i dont care. but where ive been and ive seen bics fail, you can easily say i didnt have proper knowledge to fix it and thats fine. but that proves my point. with proper knowledge you can survive like a caveman, but not all people have proper knowledge.
***** Try using a BIC when your fingers are already cold and you've begun to lose feeling and fine motor skills. You'll be dead before your fire gets started. The flint & steel can be used successfully even then. This Lightening Strike device would work then too. If your life is worth $1.00, then rely on your BIC. Otherwise, carry something more reliable.
Actually I didnt' say what you quoted. What I said, was specific to cold hands and loss of "fine motor skills". Those are the skills required to "flick your BIC". That tiny wheel and button are difficult to use in such a situation. And... you don't have to be "in deep, deep trouble" for your hands to reach that state. Been there, done that, didn't enjoy it. You, on the other hand, have obviously not been there or done that. Simply having your gloves off long enough to make several failed attempts at using a BIC, at tha right temperatures, would suffice. Beyond that, try using your BIC with gloves on. That's why I carry two other, more user friendly, "sure fire" ways of starting a fire. The BIC is reserved for startign the coals of my charcoal grill on the back porch or burning the ends of a length of paracord.!
Seems like a good piece o kit, haven't checked $ but comments say $60? I'd go for it at $40. Your piece has some good features that make it superior and I would focus on that instead of the inefficient use of other products. That just puts you on the same level as a used car salesman. The guide slot and shroud that directs the spark is epic, replaceable ferrorod and tinder storage is an added plus. Anyone that uses their equipment enough to be effective isn't going to drop $60. And to all the dipshits that say a bic lighter this and that,, you are simple fools!! I don't have 40yrs of smoking to go by (not a fool) but have had them fail atleast twice. I carry a lighter of some sort everyday for work or jic but I'm not betting my ass on either my zippo, bic or the $40 wind n water proof lighters I have, I carry many other ways to start a fire and the one I'll never be without is a mag bar or ferrorod and a few good brain cells. You have to try and fail at every way to make fire to know to make a fire anytime anywhere and that is no guarantee.
Tethered to my Swedish Fire Steel is a large yellow plastic Hanson Pencil Sharpener from Home Depot to make tinder from a twig or Fatwood. And that will start thousands of fires after my BIC Lighter runs out of fuel... And will soon have another credit card sized Fresnel Lens from Going Gear to start fires and read the info sheet for the Fire Kit. Thank you for the video ! tjl
The Lightning Strike certainly looks like a great fire starter, and I'll be getting one as soon as possible! Still, you short changed the Gerber unit a little. I've got 3 of them, and they all put out a lot more sparks than you showed in the video. The Lightning Strike is obviously a superior fire starter, but the Gerber and similar units have their place as well.
Loved the video and comparison and Im sure it works as advertised but $40 is quite expensive for a back up fire starter when it will mostly be a back up. 4 pack of Bic lighters can be had for about $2, seal them in a bag with some laundry lint and you have a instant fire .. If the price was maybe around $20 then it would be far more accessible to many more people... great video though.
It's pretty easy to light a fire with any spark when you're using cloth soaked in petrol.
I use an ordinary Swedish firesteel and have Absolutely No trouble lighting any tinder with it.
you said "kids that we just grabbed off the street" i'm calling the cops.
+Clash Bluelight Also "We'll show you how easy it is for them to start a fire." xD
Cardinals lol!
+Clash Bluelight kids off the street? all wearing camo? all related? the price isnt the
only bs thing about this vid id wager every single frame of this is a

Clash Bluelight ... I'm with you Clash, this guy's dangerous....? and what's with the boy in the uniform talking like little Nicky (Adam Sandler).......did someone belt him in the mouth with a shovel...? This guy should be watched closely for sure.
I agree with all of the previous comments about the failure to adequately and fairly demonstrate the other products. I don't think that you tried very hard to use them in the manner that they are intended to be used. The $60 price tag is outrageous. Also, using the Scout uniform to sell your product is in direct violation of Scouting regulations.
Ordered one today before even watching this vid. Best fire starter I’ve seen in a while.
Thank you for your feedback and please feel free to leave us a review on our Lightning Strike Fire Starter Facebook Page!! We hope you love the product and get tons of use out of it!
Lol he was trying to suck at using the bear grills one
+Facti0nMa5t3rs YT I laughed at that too. It was throwing mad sparks and then he backed off of it.
+Sleepy Fred I call bullshit haha that was well biased how he did it he knew there was nothing wrong with the bear grylls one so he purposely didn't try and get the fire going haha
Yeah 100%
rip
yeah such bull 1/10 ign
I love this thing! I just ordered my second one. I have a dedicated one in my hiking pack, and now another one for my BOB. I spend 4-5 days a month in the woods, hiking/camping/woodworking. This is the BEST firestarter complete kit I have ever had/seen/used! And at only $60 bucks! That's cheap. Thanks for reinventing the wheel on this one boys, it's a masterpiece!
I love how he purposely leaves the coating on the Gerber without scraping it off.
If you ever travel back in time, never surprise a caveman holding 2 big rocks...
Noah Zork tbh most underrated comment
This is an EXCELLENT product. Thanks for posting!
"Some small kids that we've grabbed off the street" lol
6:23 He actually says that. Funny. "Hey kid, come here. I need you to light a fire. I'll give you some candy but don't tell your parents."
You guys sound pretty rehersed.
Looks like a great product that will help folks who are not experienced or that are handi-capped! Any product that comes along and has obvious advantages is a good thing! Well done and a great video.
Australian natives have been using ironstone with chert or quartz to make fires for 40,000 years.
We have iron ore and quartz everywhere.
A light my fire and a medicine bottle full of tinder, $15.
You have done a great job with this. Well spoken. Dad, great job raising your son, well spoken.
Well thought out idea and design. I agree it is a little expensive, but, I like it!
A+ for ingenuity and the creative-spark! Keep production in the USA and you have a winner.
Would recommend making bottom of handle end flat beginning at base of cap to the end of tool. This way flat surface can act as a way to single handedly prop it up at an angle like a branch so it cannot roll when striking.
Thank you so much for your video. It was very informative and I will give you feedback on my experience with the Lightning Strike.
All right Hollands. I will see to it that my Scouts know of your product. This is a great example to my boys. Thanks.
Awesome dad and son team i pray that you guys succeed with your business ..God bless you guys!
In my humble opinion, all
other man-made strikers were inferior. After being frustrated with many types
of tinder on the market, I found that you’re provided tinder is simply excellent.
However, I humbly believe that a few are going to spend $800-$5000 on quality black rifles, sniper rifle systems, hundreds of dollars for bug out bags for each member of the family, get home bags for the workplace, a high quality off-road vehicle, water purification
devices and ammunition, why not add this starter to your kit? If you want the
best you need to suck it up and pay for it.
God bless and keep up the great work
Jamie Juhl( MAJ, U.S. Army ret.)
It should have a 360 swivel on the flint stick like the blast match for even striking distribution. That would greatly increase the life on the striker.
A remarkable product that could only be made better by making it useful one-handed.
Atb
- Chris
Better to let her learn how to do it with a more minimal piece of kit. This looks very handy for base-camping, but if you're going farther out and size/weight is a concern, a smaller ferro rod is a better choice, since you can store them on your knife sheath or around your neck.
Thanks for your advise. I will consider this option too. Many thanks. Atb.
- Chris
Especially since he was intentionally scraping it wrong to make it perform badly.
yes I agree he was my light my fire medium fire steal is smaller than the gearber one he was using and it throws out so much more sparks
This is a good product. 60$ is too high though. A regular rod is not that hard to use and you can get several for 60$. But the lighting strike is also a good and useful product. I think that maximum profits will come when the price range is set around 23$. Or 38$ in certain retail outlets with good packaging.
And at 60 dollars you could buy a shit load of lighters...
+Stuart Campbell or an even bigger shitload of matches and a waterproof ziplock to put them in.
+Teddy Milan i've accidentally put lighters in the washing machine and they have survived.
OK B-man. I was just trying to stress the importance of the rule of threes. Six months of winter taught me. Each to their own though.
I get the feeling that someone has mentioned this, but $75 ????????
Greed is never a good thing.
He adds alcohol to the tinder when the camera cuts
+Mark OnTheBlueRidge a copy meaning each individual production is a copy of the original design being copied over and over making it a production
Thing is. Anyone can sell anything for whatever they wish to sell for as long as someone is willing to pay it. That is the cost for whatever it is. If he don't sell enough the. He have to lower cost. If they price gets so low then he wouldn't be doing again. Basics of supply and demand.
Can we take a minute to address "We grabbed some kids off the street"
+James G lol I also was perplexed by the choice of words. The entire sentence was just awful. "Speaking of kids, let's go over now and watch.... some kids... that we've grabbed off the street with very little outdoor experience."
I guess we should be happy they were freed from his basement for a while?
HAHAHA!
+James G Stop being a PC pansy and you'll enjoy life more.
Hes just a troll. I ignored him.
This fire starter is so bad ass I just ordered one can't wait to get it
Nice piece of gear; I admire your entrepreneurial spirit in designing and bringing this fire starter to market.
This is amazing! I really like this.
Your firestarter is the best i have seen and i did my research Excellent product i plan to buy a few!!
This is a great design. I can tell thought went into the production of it. However, I do agree with some; that it is over priced. Thank you for taking time to explain and for the video. Hope you have success!
Not a bad kit. I do use the Bear Grylls fire starter and it works very well for me.
Aesthetically an Ideal & Innovative Design ....Hats off for the Product Designer +++++
+Amit Chauhaan have you seen the price?
+Nico4387 Nope... Coz myself being a Product Designer, I hav commented for the Design & Innovation only.... I do understand Price of the Product is even one of a major factor for its success which every Designer should Brainstorm upon..... though three thumb Rules are substantially important while Designing a Project are ...Design which looks Good, Design which is Economical for the Masses & Design which is Safe to Use +++++
+Nico4387 ...Ha ha lols... Your One Liner Question itself is an Answer of it....Good One +++++
Notice the sparks that continue burning on their own for a few seconds, that is magnesium. The more magnesium the better the spark, but the faster it wears away.
Light a fire in cold, heavy mist or rain with it.
The reason people use traditional firesteel is that it is traditional and won't brake. If i need something like " Lighting strike " i would just get a Zippo instead.
This is a good product... if you don't know how to use a fire steel properly.
Seems like a great product, worth getting as a survival technology, i will probably buy one,
Genius product. Great job
Very nice, I'll be checking this out!
Exactly what Tracker Scout said. $25-30 at the most, you'll sell much more volume.
I have my own fire starter already made after seeing the movie, but without the tinder container. It works great, and cost me 10 euros together.
I love Hunter's happy dance!
Well, this looks like a clever and useful device. And I think they did a good job of the video.
"Here are some kids that we grabbed from off the street." :)
one observation...the set screw requires an allen wrench. set screws can work them selves loose. do you carry a set of allen wrenches in your survival pack? change it to a flat head or include the allen key with the product. otherwise it really is a better mouse trap.
I like the design but for that price you can keep it. Let me know when it's in the $30 range.
Looks like a pretty handy all in one, although I have to say looks as though you purposely made the Gerber ineffective by not using the striker properly. That's all I got.
WOW! And all these years I just carried a zippo :) That never fails ;)
Very impressive self-contained unit. Makes me wish I did more camping. :-) I may get one to have for my survival bag anyways. A bic is only so useful. Good luck to you and your family in their endeavors!
Ill stick with light my fire. And before you compare anything at least know how to properly strike a fero rod
I liked the video, I was touched that you & your son have a nice friendship. Keep up the good work.
When starting a fire. Fatwood is your best friend.
i have the bear grylls fire starter(not the one in the video) it stores tinder also in a waterproof compartment, it cost me $13 and makes HUGE sparks..60$ is nuts for this.
I have a Ferro Rod in a Fat Wood handle ,
100% percent water proof and I have Fire anytime, anywhere
looks easy enough to make , housing could be made from a few different size flashlights
in my experience having a burred 90 degree angle on a striker makes all the difference when firestarting, ive used the cheapest nastiest steels to good effect with a decent striker.
Although you have to admit, his product does throw a very good and focused spark
he calls the normal ferro rod "traditional flint and steel" also.
I knew I recognized the voice and face! Sir! You are definitely a trusted man in the industry! BTW I am the officer on the right side of the pic Semper Fi
That would be cool to see in sporting good stores
Yes sir we are working on it! For now, you can find us at most hunting and fishing trade shows and big outdoor industry events or you can order off our website!
"We grabbed some kids off the street ages 7 to 14 yrs old. Now we're gonna have some fun with marshmellows"!!! LOL
Jim C. Totally believable. Same thing happened to me. Except I had a $5.00 Cohglans fire steel. So luckily I had $55.00 in bills to use as tinder.
Jim C. Obviously you have never been to tates hell. Stay in the city if you haven't//
Great piece of kit
Sounds good Darrel I'll be ordering a couple of them soon, along with tinder refills.
"kids we've grabbed off the streets" "Skylar age 7, show us your stuff"
To those of you who think a bic lighter will do the trick, try using one that's wet or in freezing or windy conditions, you will find that they are useless. Any knowledgeable outdoorsman or survivalist uses a more reliable fire starting tool.
*****
what if your bic de pressurizes in your pocket because the button was pushed down? if you are saying you only rely on a bic lighter you are no woodsman, or no woodsman with knowledge. two is one, one is none. dont rely on one thing, especially not something that can fail. and as you said in your post they can fail (albeit you can fix those failures they do not ALWAYS work).why would i rely on something that could possibly fail?
***** I walk around with my gun loaded on my hip all the time and it doesn't even have a safety. it is a double action single action Sig Sauer P226.
the classic "its a hipster thing" that one i personally like. im just saying that what was implied with what you said was that you should only carry a bic lighter. now that isnt a good thing to tell people, if you also carry stormproof matches and various other forms to make a fire than say so. two is one, one is none. when i was less experienced in the woods i would have trouble getting a fire going, yes even with a lighter because it failed me and i was not experienced enough to know how to fix the problems that were occurring.
just to say that a bic is going to always work is stupid, you yourself pointed out a lot of flaws in the premise of ONLY carrying a bic lighter. and thats what i was getting from your original post. just because you can fix those problems does not mean those problems are okay.
if bic lighters work under any condition than why do we have firesteels, matches, waterproof matches, stormproof matches, and many other forms of fire making.
i agree that a bic is the EASIEST way to start a fire, but like you said they can work under any condition with proper knowledge. i just do not think its a good idea to advocate that people should only carry a bic.
thats just me personally.
and the thing about a gun, you can very easily bring up other things that are not relevant.
like if i bought a new backpack and said my back pack was the best pack ever. even thought the strapped failed, well i duct taped it. the pack cover wasnt waterproof, so i waterproofed it. the shoulder straps were uncomfortable and the adjusters slipped often, so i bought new ones.
we can always fix problems that occur but that does not fix the fact that they did. thats the point that i am getting across. just me personally, i wont rely on a bic. and you cna if you wish, or dont. i dont care. but where ive been and ive seen bics fail, you can easily say i didnt have proper knowledge to fix it and thats fine. but that proves my point. with proper knowledge you can survive like a caveman, but not all people have proper knowledge.
And the Magic tender you can get from your dryer lint!!! Add some Vaseline, and instant fire with or without the Lighting Striker....
Great idea, I want one, please send me more info, Thank You, I think I just found my firestarter system.
Thank you for the video ! tjl
those kids are invisible! Great entertaining ad but also a cool product :P
The Allweather fire starter is a MUCH better deal and works just as well. I am very impressed with my Allweather fire starter.
Well made. Works great.
*INSANELY OVERPRICED!*
I'd rather have three Aurora or three Exotac fire starters than one LS.
Darrell, Looks like an awesome Product.
At about 7:58 I thought "Why am I watching this? "
