I have the 2019+ sti aem version on my 2019 sti and it runs great. I have the air smoothing fin insert perfectly dead center set in the charge pipe and everything installed and tightened correctly and have used it for thousands and thousands of miles without a tune. Stock tuned sti. No issues, always on top of my maintenance schedule 3500mile oil changes etc. I also have a dual port blow off valve set 80% recirc 20% atmosphere with the aem intake on my 2019 sti. No tunes car runs great. All the haters and Cobb selling access port+ intake to y’all for a grand + a pop y’all are crazy. Install a wideband gauge you’ll see hardly a quarter of variance. Now keep in mind, before the 2019+ sti airbox redesign that makes it almost open air itself like an aftermarket intake from factory, the 2015-2017 had more restriction with a milk jug. This all to say the 2019+ sti is basically tuned from factory for an aftermarket intake with air smoothing fins. Don’t buy an intake with stock tune and use it without a air smoothing fin insert you need this for a stock tune. And never flat foot the gas WOT under 3500rpm. The car will last fine. Mine has in Florida with crazy hot temps even and iat’s high af.
To those that say you need a tune. Has anyone actually compared the Air fuel ratio and knock before and after an intake on a 2015 wrx on stock tune? I ask because as far as I know this 2015 has a different emissions system utilizing a wide range o2 sensor for fuel trim feedback, meaning the car should be able to compensate just as good as your tuner for maintaining stock-like combustion conditions. I'm guessing if you compared the air mass flow rate of the aem intake vs stock on a 2015 wrx you'd notice that a cold day in a wrx flows more air mass through a stock intake than the aem on a mild day. I like the comment about saying aem is in the business of selling intakes when you're encouraging tunes. The tuners are in the business of selling more expensive tunes. This is 2015, you think a car isn't smart enough to tell when its running lean or knocking and compensate?
I don’t have a tune and it runs fine, actually runs better. I also have a Cobb cat back exhaust too. Of course a tune will give you the most power out of anything!! But not required!!
This AEM intake looks really good on the WRX, unlike the AEM one for the FRS/BRZ which I was never really a fan of. Also sounds really good on the WRX!!
If one were to pair this with an invidia Q300 cat back and a Bren E-Tune I am sure it will be a substantial difference over stock. I am currently running Cobbs OTS map on a stock 15 WRX and it has made the car much more driveable. I am waiting to get the exhaust and this cai and then tune
Another good video. Here's a suggestion: You said you're still building the car up. Perhaps you could list everything you've done to the car thus far in the comments. While watching this video I was wondering if the car had a BOV or the stock bypass. Just a thought. Keep up the good work!
so i have just recently installed this to my 2015 wrx. i was driving it and put about 30 miles on it then i noticed it would bog when i would try to but my foot on it and sometimes it would kick and throw me forward then initiate the boost and acceleration. then at about 40 miles after the install it started to bog and the rpm's shot down and my car died. I was stuck on the side of the road for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what happened. the check engine light was on and cruise control was flashing tried to start it up again and it would just putts then shut back off. once it finally started back up after about the 20 minutes i took it straight home and struggled to keep it running the whole time. I made sure to disconnect the battery when installing it so i know thats not the problem. I'm really not sure what the problem is and could use help!!! my friend has a stock 2015 wrx and installed the same cold air intake and it has been treating him well for over 500 miles so please i could use all the help thanks!!
+Tyler Smith That seems very odd. I would double check the MAF sensor to ensure that it has a proper seal and also check to make sure there were no leaks as well. Now we recommend a tune for an intake, but even without a tune, you should not see the issues you were having, which leads me to believe there may be a leak somewhere. Also, were you able to check the CEL code? If so, what was it? Thanks, Rick
I just got this from you guys is there suppose to be a coupler with it because mine did not come with one. Do I need a coupler on either end of the intake ?
This is so difficult. I read 50% that this does not need a tune and the car can compensate. Then i read 50% that it does need a tune. I know AEM says it does NOT need one. If i dont get a tune, will this hurt my engine? Or will it just not give me the full 25 HP gain?
+NATE the DUKE We would always recommend going with a tune to be safe. A tune will make the intake safe for the engine and should net you more power as well. Thanks, Rick
you don't need a tune, but don't expect much or any gains without it. manufacturers claim power gains regardless of the tune, yet no dyno has supported the claims. you just getting the sound out of it without a tune. if you only care about the sound look up "milk jug removal" stock intake has a sound baffler once removed sounds just like cold air intake.
+Vanneker Hey man, im driving a 2016 STI, thinking about this upgrade. What would be the "side effect" of installing a Cold Air Intake and "Not" tuning the engine? Will it affect the longevity of the engine?
I know a protune is required, but for the time being, would the Cobb Stage 1+ OTS map work? That is for the Cobb Big SF intake, but I'm guessing it should be fine, until a protune is done?
+Sebastian Skokan you would be fine with the turbo inlet hose, but this intake will require a custom tune as the Accessport does not come with a map specific for the AEM intake. Thanks, Rick
We've had both and honestly I don't think you could go wrong with either one, but you will want to get a tune once you have the intake installed. :) Thanks, Rick
Do you have to use a re-tune on the car to install this intake? Or are you able to reset the mass airflow sensor and re calibrate it for the new intake?

That's the frustrating part. It is easy to say how good a mod "feels" but the dyno comparison is fact. I am not going to mod my '15 WRX until I see some hard numbers. Even the e-tune companies talk about a lot of "feel" but don't share a lot of factual dyno info, comparing stock vs. mods.
I'm with you! I'd never do anything to my cars because it's supposed to give more power. I want to see hard numbers, more power/torque, better torque curve etc... The sad truth is, most DIY mods are a myth and will do nothing to you enhance performance.
Paul Naylor i have this CAI and a turbo back and after a tune im getting 303 whp in my 15 wrx. without the intake and exhaust they are making 275whp with the same tune. check out Brentuning!
Mike Krause , I am looking at buying this intake as their is a sale and rebate on it and one can find it for $245 shipped which is darn good. Later I will add an invidia Q300 cat back and that will be it, I planned to follow this up with en E-Tune from Bren
Once the throttle closes(assuming you are under boost) the sound will come from the blow off valve, but if the valve is recirculating(like stock), you will hear the valve but the sound will come out of the intake. Thanks, Rick
The stock BOV on the WRX sucks lol I swapped it out with the TurboXS Hybrid BOV and it sounds amazing. doesn't require a tune either so that made everything so much easier.

If there was an engine type that would take advantage of a cold air intake it would be an N/A.
A turbo engine with cold air is nonsense as the 2 or 3 degrees you could possibly get lower, would be lost in the turbo housing, and after the turbo the air goes through the intercooler anyway.
Most of the time, cold air intakes require longer piping which per se, generates more air resistance which reduces power.
