I love this song. Robert Palmer’s gimmick of the background band worked miracles for him. It put him over the top fame wise. He was a total turn on with clothes sharper than razors and a stare that would stop you dead in your tracks. He dropped dead from a heart attack in his early 50s. He did another song with the girls backing him named “Simply Irresistible”. You will like it! I love Robert Palmer.

Nobody - even back in the 80s - ever assumed, the ladys were actually playing these instruments 🙂 Them gems were there just for the beauty of it. Optics only. Robert Palmers actual musicians (who are not in this video) were awesome.
Vogue had done a front cover with very beautiful but vacant models pretending to play instruments, so this was a sort of joke about that!

I’ve been married for 35 years. One of the funniest things happened connected to this song. Like 30 years ago, I came home one day and when I walked up to the house this song was blaring!!!! I walked in and my husband was dancing in the living room “like no one was watching”.
I just stood there until he turned when he was dancing and saw me. It was hilarious.

i was a heavy metal dj & i took a chance playing this song & everybody in the venue was bopping & headbanging to it -which allowed me to be more experimental by playing stuff that wasn't out & out metal, like 'rebel yell' & 'money for nothing'!!

Robert Palmer had a long career where he was able to make a living, but he never popped big until this song. The backup girls gimmick made this video explode on MTV, and everyone knew who he was.
My gf at the time and I went to a Halloween party in costume, and everyone immediately knew she was a Robert Palmer girl. Then, they would say something like, "Oh, so you must be Robert Palmer. Cool."

Totally correct no Politically correct garbage and “Aesthetics” definitely had less than nothing to do with it. It was all about the sex appeal. I had a black mini dress and heels like this. I was all about clubbing back then. This came out the month I turned 21. I was all over it 😂😂❤

If I recall correctly, all of the ladies in this video were top European fashion models at the time. This video was so hugely successful, that it was followed by Simply Irresistible, with even more women in it, not to mention the famous "shewing!"

From what I heard, Robert Palmer recorded the song in front of a green screen. He had no idea that the director of the video would insert the "girl band" behind him. This was intentional, as the director wanted Robert to give an authentic performance with no "distractions". This is what adds to the iconic nature of this video. 😂

It doesn’t look as if a green screen was used. He and the girls are all in the studio toghether.
Holding down the all-important beat is the Chic rhythm section, Edwards on bass and Tony Thompson on drums - the same guys who inadvertently built the foundation of hip-hop when the rhythm track of Chic’s “Good Times” was incorporated into Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight,” the first widely popular rap song. Thompson (who also worked with Chic co-founder Nile Rodgers on David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” album) plays a thwacking two-four rhythm - showing off with an open hi-hat flourish on the three that gives the song one of its key hooks - cranked up to booming volume in the way that only ‘80s drums can be, and makes it crunch even harder by playing as far behind the beat as humanly possible. Edwards makes this slow and very stompy song dance with a simple but amazingly funky bassline that anchors the riff while also making it elastic (his bassline dances exponentially better than the models in the video). That grinding guitar riff, of course, is the center of the song. I have read reports over the years about Robert Palmer and they all have a recurring theme. Everyone who worked with him said he was an insane perfectionist and the nicest person they ever met. I loved this song and video when it was first released and I still do. Wish I had met him. RIP Robert.
Robert had a lot of songs in the mid to late 70's. Johnny and Mary, Sneaking Sally Through The Alley, Every Kind of People, Bad Case of Loving You. In the 80's he really came into prominence with this song, Simply Irresistible, and then joined former members of Duran Duran for a supergroup called Power Station and had aa couple of great hits- Some Like it Hot, Get it On (Bang a Gong). Definitely worth checking more out!
This video truly captured a moment of the 80's, and DEFINITELY set Robert Palmer up for LIFE! LOL And good on him, he was a hard worker of his trade, it was nice to see him hit it big with this one and get the recognition he deserved.
Your observations about the women not playing the guitar, are exactly correct... which is why Shania did what she did. She is all about girl power & wanted to point out the ridiculousness of using pretty faces like they are props, instead of humans.
Boy did you get that one wrong. The actual story is that Palmer was 'instructed' by his record company to use women as prop's to glamorise his records. He poked two fingers up at the record company by filming this as a parody. Shania Twain's song and video is a parody of a parody. Something that seems to be lost on some.

But, early on Robert Palmer had some bangers with the likes of: "Bad Case of Loving You" "Every Kind of People" "Riptide" "Some Like It Hot" and then with the Power Station he had hits with: Lonely Tonight" "Get It On" and a few others. This video is iconic, and often parodied. Weird Al had women dressed like this (but with moustaches) in his "UHF" video (in addition to also parodying this song as "Addicted to Spuds"), Bowling for Soup dressed up as the women from this video in their "1985" video, and a commercial for Emerald Nuts has the women from this video attempting to "assimilate" a guy who fell asleep (because of not eating Emerald Nuts). Also, the women return for Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" video, and then again for Palmer singing "Simply Irresistible" for a Pepsi commercial.
I was about 15 when this song came out. I had a huge crush on him that I hid from my friends. He was older and his type of music wasn't what we were listening to. But he was F.I.N.E. fine!

This is my favorite Robert Palmer song. I remember he died in 2003 because John Ritter died September 11th, and Palmer died couple weeks later on the 26th.

He was a singer--full stop. He was middle-aged, married and a dad. Did not suffer fools. This artifice was to meet the standards of MTV and let him have access to a larger market. It worked. Sadly he passed unexpectedly. He had a good solo career, and did some work with the Power Station--an outlet for other MTVfamous musicians who were limited due to the superficial.
Those 3 packs of cigarettes a day definitely caught up with him...

Iconic music video. This was a huge MTV staple back in the 80's. Robert Palmer was everywhere in the 80's. When Duran Duran split for a period they broke up into two bands - THE POWER STATION, which Robert Palmer, Andy Taylor (guitarist) & John Taylor (bassist) for Duran Duran collaborated on an incredible albume - "Some Like it Hot", "Get it on Bang a Gong". ARCADIA was the other band, which featured Simon LeBon (singer), Nick Rhodes (keyboards) and Roger Taylor (drums) all from Duran Duran. They released an incredible album called, SO RED THE ROSE. Songs to check out - "Goodbye is Forever" and "Election Day".
Some fun trivia on this video:
*The models had some wine before filming and one hit Robert in the head with her guitar when she lost balance. The wine is also the reason why the ladies are dancing slightly out of rhythm with each other.
*They hired a musician to show the models some basic guitar fingering techniques but after an hour he gave up and left. Notice their playing is not very convincing.
*They were supposed to look like showroom mannequins.
*Palmer used the same basic theme with the models for two other of his videos.
*The model on the drums, Kathie Davies, was a bond girl in Octopussy (1983).
*The models had lip gloss re-applied multiple times throughout the filming.
*One model said that Palmer seemed intimidated by having five ladies towering over him.
*Palmer's wife was there watching.

It's an absolute classic from the late great Robert Palmer. He used 'no reaction' models because he felt women were being used as sex objects in music videos of the day, and this was his way of highlighting the problem. RIP Robert Palmer, gone way to soon (like so many others) 🙋♂
