- This week on Helicopter ER, The flying doctors and paramedics of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance head to the Peak District where a mountain biker has sustained a broken neck.
Strap in and fire up the helicopter engines for the most adrenaline-packed medical rescue missions you've ever seen on TV. This popular British series takes viewers into the cockpits of ER choppers to experience life or death dramas, high-speed action and colourful characters. The missions are often the only hope for the critically ill or badly injured in England's most unreachable landscapes.

The skill these pilots have to gently touch down on a country road is absolutely mind boggling. Such impressive teams.
It's amazing that rescue crews could save these practically mortally wounded patients not just from death, but serious permanent injury. Hats off!

Yes, I laughed at that too 😅
My heart twinged with the last one when he grabbed the paramedics hands. Even grown men become like scared children in situations like that.
In America just the cost of being transported to the trauma unit via helicopter will cost between 10,000 to 50,000 dollars. We are not talking about any actual medical costs from Hospitals, doctors, tests, etc..... If you have a "desire" or "need" to get into a traumatic accident and need a helicopter lift, then try to do it outside the US!!!! I saw one of these shows where they were transporting a serial fake patient, and even after the 4th time in a month they still let him go. In America that guy would be arrested immediately for endangering the first responders lives..... Thanks for posting, these guys/women are hero's!!!!
@@raviii398 Me wallowing in my entitled white bread world of Washington DC!!!!!
United States sucks. We should have a better medical system.
Firstly, I want to say that these pilots are really impressive. Landing in the conditions they do and on the terrains that they do. Secondly, and I've said it before. I watch these rescue shows here in the States and I've never seen such comprehensive care. The tent, pain meds on scene, the manpower. I've never seen such a thing here in the US. It's really interesting, and also makes me envious haha I have nothing but horror stories when dealing with emergencies here in the US and a lot of my friends can say the same.
The system in the US pales in comparison. Imagine getting and giving help in these situations without money as an issue. I am envious and sad that the USA is money driven.
@cjbailey584 It really is insane to see the difference. Imagine the amount of casualties we could avoid if we had roadside pre-care like this? We could even reduce long term complications for people because they're gettinf treatment sooner rather than later. My mom has a TBI she still hasn't recovered from because of EMS and hospital negligence.
"We're surrounded by coppers mate, nobody's gonna nick it" lmao
I had to think about what “coppers” meant. Lol The difference in the English language from country to country is astounding.
I truly hope that all viewers appreciate the UK National Health system. How blessed you are to have this support, and what heroes the NHS people are…..on the ground, in the air and in the wards. Bless you all!
Imagine being the guy moving the guy's neck whose life is entirely in your hands for those few seconds
Hats off to all these medics and rescue personnel..unsung heroes.

Same here. I'm from Cardiff Wales but live in Canada!
Same it’s a great show
💯 But it can be sad
Same, I always found myself watching the medical channels on tv when I was younger and always liked the British one's.
Right here with ya. Found this show on a whim and now I'm trying to find full episodes!
UK paramedic workers are so soothing and reassuring. Every show I’ve seen involving North American ones has left me thinking their bedside matter has much to be desired.
I agree!!
I've experienced good and bad from ambulance crews.
Agreed
Can we also appreciate the mountain rescue men that came to help again these people are not brought to the front in given credit for their jobs, and it was so nice that they were right there to help bring this man up there
Men AND women. There was at least one woman on one of those mountain rescue teams.
"I must not land on a rock" good plan 😂
Amazing doctor's and pilot's that fly to the rescue of people desperately needing their help. I was absolutely shocked to learn that it's funded by donations, unbelievable.
When they held his hands when he said he feels scared :(
Thank god Rob was wearing a helmet when he hit that rock with his head or they would of been carrying out a corpse

They do such a fantastic job on taking care of their patients!!!
I loved visiting the Peak District years back; my uncle lives there & both motorbikes and free rock climbs. Hopefully he won’t ever need a call! I’m in Canada and when temps hover around 0 I break out the basic crampons on those slippery hills-they’re total life savers.
Its always more concerning when a patient is quite.
From the U.S .
You guys do a great job but at the 41 minute mark when the young guy jumped off the ramp it made the stretcher jump he should have known better ....
It caused unnecessary pain to the patient . And could have caused serious complications . Back injuries are very serious . I really hope he realized the seriousness of his actions .
Great work guys helping others.
My gfs daughter was air lifted by helicopter 🚁 due to serious head trauma to a children’s hospital.. & when she saw the bill she asked to be admitted to the hospital herself !!! Between 2 hospitals it was over $100k 😳..
I hate to read this....... what is the reason that you dont have health care? I mean I know its not but from a politic stand point, whats the reason?!
A great video. Thank you so much for posting these. I am a huge fan of the show in Japan, a country
where an ambulance is only transportation.
As of Feb. 1 2012, there were 32 air ambulances operating in 27 prefectures in Japan...

This is so cool to me. Because in this show it seems only the doctors can administer certain meds like Ketamine. But in the US, paramedics carry it and administer it. I just found that one difference particularly interesting because I recently had Ketamine while in the hospital with severe pain. I think it should only be used by doctors, in a controlled setting. I had a bad reaction to it so it scares me to think that could happen to someone without the adequate tools to help them.
I went completely unresponsive, got super sick and could not breathe well. I also could not stop getting sick but I was unresponsive so my gag reflex wasn’t present. I remember about 10 people checking in on me every couple of minutes or so. Everything else is a blur.
Hope u well
@@bevcamren1316 thank you! I am better now.
Ketamine can cause nausea, “freak outs” , slower breathing, and more. In the UK they understand the drug. Here in the US, I seriously doubt it. Small amounts at a time.
I got ketamine for my horrible knee pain in hospital and I started to hallucinate. I saw children’s rubber boots everywhere and every time a nurse passed by me I asked if he is selling rubber boots. Eventually he was quite annoyed because I disturbed all the other patients 🤷♀️
It struck me as odd…ketamine is strong! I would’ve thought morphine would’ve been the initial go-to (it was for me when I went by ambulance in Canada…administered by paramedics enroute).
" stay still" means nothing to a person who does not understand English. " Do not move" would be better. But native English speakers so often forget what " simple English" is. And I'm an interpreter and English teacher. Trust me, I dumb my language down a lot for my students.
Yeah, a total game changer Sherlock. In the meantime they are saving lives...
It is interesting how they use ketamine often for severe pain in England... In the U.S. it is mostly morphine.
They use ketamine here in the USA too. My daughter almost over dosed on it. The paramedic gave her too much.
Give us more please❤️❤️❤️ from South Africa 🇿🇦

ME ALSO
I have an extra deep spot in my heart for people in car accidents as I've been in a pretty bad one and I know pretty much exactly what's going through their mind and what they feel. Have yet to (and hopefully never will) hit a tree, so I don't know, however I have been in an accident involving (I think, don't remember as this happened in I wanna say 2009 or 2010 when I was a small kid going to kindergarten) a drunk driver. Again, I don't know, but it happened in Russia, and I am going to assume it was a drunk guy cus he was going pretty damn fast. It sucked.
I totally get that too. My wife was hit by a sand truck when she was freshly 18. She is 36 now and struggles every day from the lasting damage caused by it. It is heartbreaking. I hope you are doing well with the aftermath from yours!
@@joshuacook4116 yea im fine. It was only temporary pain.
Obviously it is unfortunate for the older woman who broke her knee/leg and needs a replacement but oh man, her husband must feel so badly, even though it wasn't intentional.
That biker case at the start was a proper challenge but everyrhing was well done and amazing work❤
Like, even if your spines are hosed (and you are stuffed with a permanent spot of bother), you can still be awesome to some extent. Way to go, babes!
WHEN IS SEASON 2 COMIN OUT GOSH I LOVE YA

Thank's for being one
Fwoof... imagine if he'd not been wearing a helmet... actually, no don't imagine that.
I'm mostly been thinking on how we could better guard against injuries like this without being overly burdensome to the point where nobody would use it. Probably already something like this existing.
Broken neck is no joke. When you go to the hospital you’re going to feel the pain don’t take your life for granite. Enjoy it.
I’ll bet you that that cell phone that they so worried about is what caused his accident to begin with

Hey there! I'm from Ontario!
Ha ha, no kidding-I’m from Ontario too! That said, having also been to northern England it is similar….but the clouds move way faster! They’re also an island so more impacted by the ocean….along the lines of Newfoundland (just less snow other than at high elevations). I do hate March here, though….rain, snowstorm, next day I need a t-shirt, then an ice storm…it’s dumb.
Here in Sweden going by ambulance cost 400 kronor, and a visit at the emergency cost the same ! And if you have stay in hospital it cost also per day depending how much your income are, I paid 110 kronor per day last time I had to stay in hospital 😣 I don't work becuse of my health condition since 2004 so I don't have so much money every month 😢.
If the polish driver did not have any neck or back pain why no just collar him then make him get out of the vehicle under his own power? (If no extremity injuries that is). We rarely back board these days. It is useless. (Elderly we backboard however.)
From texas and I'm wondering do kids have first aide training in school it seems like just about any bystander that helps has a general knowledge of what to do or not to do. I'm not aware that kids from the USA get any first aide training. Although most Americans seem to only do for themselves anyway. I've been the only one to stop several times to help an elderly person change a tire or push their car outta the road if it dies. People from Europe just seem like they care more for others

Judith is a badass.
Really? I had no idea!
Watching this episode was weird because my name is Natalia and my boyfriends name is Martin 0_o
It's always interresting to watch these videos, but one thing I'm always left wondering; Why does the aircraft microphones suck so much? If I was in a discord call with someone with so much air in the mic I'd mute em. xD
There's a great deal of noise in a helicopter. The noise-cancelling microphones filter out most of it but the sound quality always suffers a bit.
Hellie mag 9-8's not gonna crash....its hot one hellie pilot steve....scary to think of this kinda trauma happen to anyone...❗
ABC is the first thing you do in a emergency.
I had to laugh when the one rescue were the husband cell on top of the wife the helicopter crew were saying or should I say the narrator was saying that it was mid winter there now I live in Canada, and when they took off all I could see was green
What’s with the difference between us and British stretchers? The us ones just slide into the ambulance from the ground, and they don’t need a ramp or anything. Seems like it would better?
Quick question, i always see the "spoon" stretcher used, why they almost never use the solid one? Just curious about protocols of other nations.
Like the girl on the hay, they need to move her and lift her legs/hips/back... Using a solid one it will just slide underneath.
sliding goes better on a blanket...
only 6 weeks with 3 x broken spine?
Here in America a cauality refers to someone dead
LOL me jacket!!
The Air ambulance is applied only to the riches in my country since it costs with high expense.

Poster doesn't know the difference between a cyclist and a motorcyclist.
Why were they so careful with the man mountain biking but not the man in the motorcycle crash?
They were carefully with both but they come with their own challenges.
The motorbiker was in extreme pain but landed on a flat surface. It would have been easier to stabilise him on a board even though it was painful.
The mountain biker landed in a rock garden a downhill section, this made it more difficult to stabilise him on a board.
@@Benthedroneguy thank you. I appreciate the response :)
@@sarahunt9331 you're welcome :)
I think there are several reasons the techniques were different. For one the terrain on the mountain bike trail was simply more treacherous for the rescuers themselves so they would have been moving more carefully both for the patient's sake and so as not to slip down the slope themselves. Also, the mountain biker had no airway or breathing problems, but the motorcyclist appeared to be in respiratory distress which - although a spinal injury is obviously serious - would generally require a much more urgent response.
MOUNTAIN BIKER HAD MORE SERIOUS INJURIES SO THEY HAD TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL
Yikes
Is it normal for people to move their arms and legs like the guy that went off the bike when they quite possibly have a spinal injury
Yeah, so I had a spinal cord injury a couple months ago, when I was in my school's weight training room I rotated wrong and fractured my back. a piece of bone punctured my spinal cord, and I couldn't feel my left leg at all. I was told that it was normal for me to be able to move most or all of my extremities after a spinal cord injury because It depends on the type/severity/where it is.

Can someone tell me why the UK rescue service is donor paid?
It is in Canada as well. Free health care can’t afford to cover such costs through taxes.
It’s a good idea, should be done here in the US, life flights here are tremendously expensive, medical insurance only pays a portion of the cost. ☹️

People don't think clearly on a scene, it's easier to start freaking out about your phone than having to think about you might having to have awful injuries.

People who break their neck, recover for a couple of years and go back riding a bike in unknown areas full speed, should be charged 100% next time they are required ANY assistance. It is not irresponsible. He should be checked by a psychiatrist.
I get where you're coming from... But it's no unknown areas. Any downhill biker would know it. But I get it not Everyone knows those tracks. But on the other hand... If someone gets into a car crash, gets saved and goes back on the road, or if they fall off a horse, get saved and still sit back, do you think they should pay for next time too?
It's a hobby and they seemed to have proper protection, and they went in a group. The safest way they can do it. Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere. This wasn't their fault or carelessness.

Why did the rescuer arrive alone?. Where is the backboard for the patient. If his neck is broken, these talkative amateur practitioners, removing his helmet IS IDIOTIC.why do rescuers always have to find volunteers to mive the patient???? If this Is British Rescue services, the casual approach means poor health care overall, or Brits are made of iron.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PATIENT? Even a typed screen message would evidence a continuum of case histories. So much conversation abt the helicopters the announcer's comments abt "near death" situations are truly not made a filming priority.
I think they know more about what they are doing than some keyboardwarrior in the commentsection on youtube. If you actually watched the entire video they give you information about how the patients are doing and what was wrong with them in the end.
The backboard is THERE, on his back. I can't understand what you mean. Are you a paramedic? Or do you just see this type of shows? Not all backboards are the same.
Watch till the end a recap of the patients is done there however the mountain biker ended up with 3 broken vertebrae in his neck. While the scooter guy ended up with 3 broken vertebrae in his back, lady in car ended up with fractured neck while her partner ended up with a fractured wrist and a few broken ribs. White horse lady ended up with broken leg and dislocated knee. Leg is good however knee will need to be replaced as it’s damaged beyond repair. Husband will not likely hear the end of it though, LOL!
THEY ARE UNABLE TO TELL IF HIS NECK IS ACTUALLY BROKEN WITH HELMET ON AS LONG AS THEY ARE VERY CAREFULL THEY CAN REMOVE HELMENT IN ORDER TO ACCESS INJURY & PUT ON A NECK BRACE NOW WHO'S THE IDIOT!!
