- Hey!
So, following a recommendation I went and got me a set of "DR's Dragon Skin" strings, that feature the life expectancy of coated strings but without some of the disadvantages, so I thought I'd make a short demo for the strings.
First half of the video is recorded with a known brand of coated strings, second half is DR Dragon Skins.
I was really impressed by how much more "alive" the DR strings sounded, even though I recorded using the exact same equipment and settings, the bass sounded different and even output went up a bit!
I liked them very much and I think I have found a set that suits me, being an "active" player, I kill strings very fast, and coated strings are usually a compromise...
Tell me what you guys think of the sound! am I just dreamin'?
Take care,
Or.
great video man!
Man I've just fallen totally in love with this 'weird' looking bass! I'm sold on the logic of the ergonomics and that fat jazz TONE!! Great chops too!
Yeh i agree with you. They sound brighter than the coated strings. Nice find!!
Thanks bro! It's really a great instrument, solid sound and I love the way it looks.
Very nice video man thanks ! Dr for me, Sounds great. And your bass !!! what a fxxxing killer tone. I love it. Tell us more about this beauty.
Thanks again, great player, very groovy :-)
Those DRs sound good. How much time do you get out of a set before you notice a change?
I wish I had your chops...but that would mean practicing :)
Love your vids!
First of all, congratulations! I just saw that the channel of DR strings also uploaded your video. Now about the strings, I liked the sound of the dragon skins better (what an awesome name, by the way). I used DR before I switched to slanted frets. Fat Beams were my favorites, but I also used Black Beauties for a while. The coating was a bit sticky, but they sounded great. Does that happen with these, too?
Bro u're sick ! all ur videos are excellent. In my opinion i prefer the sound of the DR strings
I use the Neon K3 bass strings and they live forever. I regularly change my nickel strings (every month -2month depending on gigs) and the neon lasted for well over 6 months and were only changed so I could put a different coloured string on.
Hey man really nice! i was thinking about getting this bass now I'm sure :) DR's are amazing! What amp did you use (or did you just use a preamp and go straight into the camera)? sounds amazing!
I personally prefer the DR strings, they are more punchy and growly and have that presence that a bass player such as myself needs in order to get good articulation through, each player has his own preferences, Finding these DR strings was a pleasant surprise for me.
I got the impression, that you put a good amount of compression on the bass signal. Am I right?
The first set of strings sounds tighter with not so much low end as the second set. That's no problem, as amps have EQ-section to tailor the amount of low and high end.
hey, nice groove man.. what song is it? could you please tell me what's your gears/set up? any effects? Thanks!
So, yeah...I like the sound w/the DR Dragon strings compared to coated strings. What makes them "special"? Please & thanks!
im going to guess that the DR's are lower tension. That means that the neck would have some curve pulled out of it, putting the strings closer to the pickups and to the fretboard. You can see how this made the bass easier to play for you, but it also made it significantly louder. Some of that has to do with the string, but I think the setup made the DR's sound louder.
They sound good, I might have to throw a set of these on my basses for a few months. See if they can really hang that long.
It's not DR :) it's Elixir, they are both awesome and sound very good, It's just a matter of taste, the difference is subtle but noticebale
Thanks for watching!
Wow. I used to use Ernie balls all the time. I am in need of some new strings, and I think these will be my next choice! They seem to have a lot more clarity!
Hey, thanks for liking the vid and informing me about the DR channel, that's cool!
These strings feel natural and not sticky, they actually feel "dry" compared to coated strings..
hey, how do you like the pickups in the Grooveline? i've been thinking of getting one, but not really sure about the pickups they come with
Hey Or!
I ve tried them on my 2 Basses. I love their sound but I dont think they last very long.
In fact they lost their sound after a week.
I dont know, maybe I m doing something wrong but how long did they sound new on your bass?
Killer playing!
:) What's wrong with practicing?
Thank you very much!
I like coated strings more! is it DR too?? like their aggressive but DR dragon is very awesome too; they sound like marcus! they r very muscular!
Hi, thanks for watching, to be completely honest the strings were on the bass a couple of days, in which I did not play it almost at all, so the difference is not that big from fresh-out-of-the-box strings, especially in coated strings, both sets sound good in my opinion, it's up to people to decide which they like better, misleading...I don't know.. depends how you see it :)
Well...the fact that they are coated strings that sound as good if not better than uncoated strings...And they have a kind of punchy sound that I really like, there are a lot of factors at hand when choosing strings, this is my way of recommending these if you happen to look for coated strings.
Unless the coated strings in the first part of the video were just as brand new as the DRs, this could be seen as misleading.
This is a sweet jam man.
Is it a song? If it is could you tell me the name?
What a nice video....very good sound.
Thank you, It's an original tune I came up with for this video :)
It's just the Ibanez Grooveline-->Markbass Amp DI--->Maudio FastTrack pro sound card.
I think you may be correct, that, and the fact that they are steel made them louder than the Nickel ones.
They do sound good and I would recommend you try them out :)
Solid player , Awesome !
great vid bud nice playing! can you possibly tell me when your EQ what set on. you're getting some SICK pop!
sorry I forgot to say: Im wondering about your EQ because im looking to mimic it on my 5 string. I can never get the Low B to really pop like..... I have an Ibanez SR405QM. Is a great bass. Just looking to make the low end pop more.
Jake Nienhueser
hey man, first of all get a 130 gauge B for some good tension...
Regarding EQ, it's really specific for every bass, but here I think I boosted bass around 30%, mid 70% and treble around flat...
Thanks for watching as always man, glad you enjoyed it.
Hey, I also wanted to ask what kind of bass that is, it sounds really good.
Ah yeah, just saw it!
Thanks a lot, man!
I've tried a lot of strings and do setups a lot now, call that all a hunch. ;)
I will be trying these out though, as I have yet to try these strings yet.
The dragons are steel. So two questions.
1) Are u using Elixer Steels or if you're playing Elixer nickels
2) Are you using the new formula coating?
Hmm..that's weird, inside the box of strings there are directions on how to prevent dead strings and loss of intonation, try it, It worked for me...
The coated strings give a more piano-type of a sound, the Dragon Skins sound more like a bass.
Ah, if it was only a few days, then I doubt there would be that much difference, especially with coated strings. I'm used to uncoated Rotosounds, so I guess I'm used to a ton more harshness out of "few days old" strings.
I will try :) Thank you!
niceee..cool vid, and yeah...the DR sounds waaaay better
Hey man~ it's a Ibanez G105 Grooveline :) Those are pretty sick soloing bass :D
Nice video and nice song too... Teh DR strings seems to sound much better.
That's just Great man, it's important to know the instrument you play. thanks for the comment! :)
Sounds great BTW!
Thanks man, me 2, they are punch and very responsive.
Thank you, It's an original tune I wrote for this video :) don't have a name for it yet..
Interesting... could you send me a link?
Thanks! :D
that's some HOT shit playin' you got going on there
what is brand and model of bass guitar?
Jakub it’s an Ibanez Grooveline
Thanks! :) I try...
Feeling like I'm the only one that liked the first set better /:
agreed, definitely had that low end thump preferred for subtle slapping
Coated strings? Elixir?
LOVE those babies! Put 'em on my Warwick 5-string Rockbass. *My* ears heard an improvement in sound immediately [the set I had on the Warwick were less than two months old and pretty good, but the Elixirs seemed to expand the sound and articulation better].
funky.................
damn you can play dude :P
The dragon skins have more output and more low mids. I like them better.
DR Dragon skin strings rock.! ^_^.
uncoated strings are a privilege I cannot afford, I am the string destroyer, all shall fear my string-crushing slaps :)
Dragon Skins all day
oh thats y! elixir is what i always use LOL
tell us what you think
0:06 vs 1:31
0:40 vs 2:06
coated are so much better
Dude you should DEFINITLEY record this professionally and try and do something with it
