Yeah but "My Name is Mud" has slapping and hammer-ons (and offs), so I don't think it'd be possible to play it on the Mindbender. Carl Thompson had retrofitted a tremolo into Les' main 4-string, and that's how he was able to play the intro to that song (and a few other solos from that era of Primus). Apologies if I sound like a snooty turd; not tryin' to be! 👍🙂
@@bveracka your are correct. But Primus is wacky and rhythmical so bending fits wery well also like slapping. Also whamola bass stick is mostly bending notes beside hitting with stick.
@@bverackayou sure about that? Because I'm almost certain he plays one of his 6 string rainbow basses on that track. None of those had a tremolo. It sounds the way it does because those 6 strings were fretless.
@@chrisswan1170 I know exactly what you're talking about, and no, I'm not sure. There used to be a website with all the Carl Thompson basses he played, and which songs and time periods he used them. Sadly it's been defunct/404'ed for years. You may be right! I do know that his 4-string fretted Carl Thompson bass with the tremolo / whammy bar was used on the tour for the album. There's also video of him playing the song on that 4-string live (tuned B-E-A-D), but in the music video he plays the rainbow bass. Another possibility is that the song is double-tracked with two different basses; there's distortion on the bass in the opening part, but the verses are very dry. The timbre of the bass on the recording makes it hard to tell whether he's using a fretless or a fretted bass, but since he acquired the famous and beautiful rainbow bass just before recording that album, it's likely he used it for the song. Anyways, yes, I'm a geek. /huge rant (lol)
I really appreciate the transition out of the intro into the music showcase, small detail but feels very professional. Love to see you improving your already great craft!
Other instruments played (in part) by changing tension of a fixed length string: Pedal steel Guitar with B-bender or similar Koto It occurs to me that this is actually very much like a minimized koto.
Thanks! I reference the koto and others in the patent. It is essentially a dramatic improvement on all of those instruments. The Mindbender allows over an octave and a half range on a single string without changing hand position. I've actually done a couple B-bender installs myself!
That instrument lends itself to the intro to " wherever I lay my " by Paul Young. Pino paladino played it on a fretless Fender precision but those slides are iconic.

Use a slide bar on it, and a pick. Second idea: use the lower area where the first 3 frets would be and give us a beefy korn type riff with gradual bends
The control needed to stay on pitch when there's so much variation available is impressive, it vaguely reminds me of that metal band in the 80s that used a chainsaw as an instrument.
I can see this for a charles berthound kind of player who can hit all the octaves of a song on their own. Obviously it could be a “slide bass” but there is much more to unlock than that imo.
It seems kind of similar to the Japanese KOTO instrument, so I suggest trying on some finger picks and seeing if anything koto-esque springs to mind... I think there was a youtuber who did rock covers on a koto, so... look for ideas and inspirations there?
Was gonna say it's essentially a bass koto, could probably get some sitar-esque sounds as well. Would have some interesting applications in a prog rock band.
Lol. In one of the handful of times I've messed around on keyboards for a few minutes, the "Beverly Hills Cop" theme was one of the things that came out. I think it took longer me to figure out what it was than it took to figure out how to play.
Play some eastern style riffs on it. Use one or two strings as a drone and then one or two others to play a riff over the top of it. (A bit like what some of the better nu-metal bassists do...hello System of a Down)
Nice to hear Wait for the Blackout! You could do an entire series on Behs players who have been in The Damned. Captain Sensible was superb but often gets overlooked because of his chessey pop career and move to lead guitar but they had the outstanding Paul Gray (back in the band at the moment), Algy Ward (RIP), Bryn Merrick (who thumped them through much of their Goth revival period, RIP), Lemmy (RIP again) did a brief stint with them and the lovely Patricia Morrison also featured. Such Behs talent!
Really innovative bass. It will be a adjustment to learn it but once you do what are the limits to it. Need to run it through some pedals once you get the knack for it.
The 2 bands Funkdelic and Parliamentary would be cool as would doing Walk on the Wild Side some Michel Jackson and simialr music. Country punk like the Violent Femes would be cool to hear as well.
Seriously, it is suited to music where you might slide slowly from one note to the next, with some time to stabilise at the correct note pitch. So tailor the music to the instrument. Maybe a rythmic picking of an open string (in the key of the song) with the bending string(s) slowly working a melody.
I've been following Danny through UA-cam shorts, one of my favorite and I just happen to find a full length video in my feed. So far out man. I love you man. Thanks again for the trip. Sincerely, Pops fitch
using a trill, or a short bow on this would be cool! could you use a modified capo to give you some different ideas to play with? if you attached some piano hammers on it somehow it would be really interesting, could also try some kind of virtual whammy/ flanger to get some crazy noises! would love to hear some prog on this thing!!!!
Capo wouldn't do much but limit your strings to less stretching, but all the rest of that is great input! I use a bow occasionally (the sides are acutually scouped out to make room for them) and all the percussive stuff is awesome. I go effect heavy with my own recordings too.
