Completely agree. What you said about the Simpsons really hits different. As an early zoomer, I can attest to how I've basically inherited the walking corpse of a culture. Despite their technically being more opportunity for social and economic climbing than ever before, it hardly feels that way. If I want something, there is no support. There is no encouragement. We've been granted true "freedom" from a young age, and all that got us was a bunch of mental problems and addictions. Thanks 21st century.
Gen X, here. Actually, you need to thank the 20th century for the legacy bestowed upon you. From the flower children of the 60's to the corporate globalists of the 80's, there has been a persistent determination to create a homogenous culture. The walking corpse of a culture of which you speak is the consequence of the abolition of local community, one in which you were a valued member and one which you valued. The walking corpse of a culture is one absent of elders that demanded excellence from youth, not mediocrity. A culture that provided the education, training and opportunity for you to become the member of the community that the elders expected you to be. Your walking corpse of a culture has no fears and maybe even more importantly, not hatred. For millennia, mankind has always held fears and has always hated, and it has both unified them and driven them. From the loathing of the Mongols by the provincial Chinese to the Cherokees and the Muscobee, Catholics and Protestants, and everything in between, mankind has always had fear and hatred and this has cemented them in their community. I had the chance, as a young man, to hate the Japanese and the Germans. It gave me pride, belonging and security in belonging to a community that had been victorious in WW2. Culturally, those relationships mended, we forgave, and we moved forward. But I still had something to hate and to fear: Communism. My capitalist culture was superior. We were richer, we were stronger, we were better. Oh, how we hated communists. But then the wall came down in the late 80's. Communism was a shadow of its former self and there was nothing left to hate or to fear. There was nothing to cement our Western communities. And we actively raised our children not to fear and not to hate. If they did, this would jeopardise our new found global economy in which we sought to get rich. We even went so far as to dictate to our children that they respect and embrace everyone and every culture, regardless of their shortcomings. You must love one another. You must not fight. And we stopped teaching our children. We stopped teaching them theology, history and politics. We stopped teaching them economics. We reserved anything but the most basic math and science for the academically elite. By doing so, we encouraged mediocrity. We gave out participation awards rather than first, second and thirds. We expected nothing from our children. And we most certainly did not give you more freedom, we took it away. We took it away, lest you hurt yourself. You might fall off your bike, you could get abducted or drown in the creek. Here, just sit in front of this screen, dinner will be ready when it is. And with that, we took away your imagination, your creativity and your ability to solve problems. My generation, the Boomers and the last of the silent generation sit back today and deride you for your apathy. We deride you for your lack of will. We deride you for your inability to experience delayed gratification. We deride you for your lack of concentration, dedication and commitment. But we should be proud of ourselves. It's what we made you.
@@davidbrayshaw3529you saved it with the last sentence That being said im millennial (lower 30s at the moment) and in some ways agree with your outline as far as how my childhood experience went.. but on some levels not at all. Lots of video games and dodging homework too, but I have broken my body and built bonds in my youth. I agree with Jordan the key to what stopped normal childhoods is the mass adoption of the smartphone. Point blank. Parenting also of course plays a primary role but EVERYONE has been wrecked by phones to some extent. I'm No exception.
Key to having a deep friendship: be there for the ups and downs. Just because you argue, or some disagreement happens, doesn't mean you are no longer friends. When you see someone, their flaws, and everything wrong with them, but accept them, then you are truely friends. I can say my closest friends and I have been through a lot, moving states, being around for the stresses, the huge low points. But we also share in the high points, going to uni with each other, going on road trips etc. That to me is a deep friendship, seeing them for who they are, and experiencing life with them.
I haven't used any social media besides checking Facebook 3-4 times a year since 2019. Im 22 years old i hope others in my generation learn what real life can offer.
Bro it's the same deal with dudes or girls trying to find a partner to date everybody is so afraid of rejection and everybody is so desperate for validation. It's absolutely crazy it's like nobody truly is there own person anymore. I remember in high school being called a weirdo because I didn't play into that.
Yep, I was the outcast in school because I wouldn't engage in schoolyard politics, I was more interested in discussing the anime I watched in the morning.
I am 36. I have one friend. My problem is that I was raised by my grandparents and grew up surrounded by people in their 50s to 70s. There were literally ZERO children in the neighborhood I lived in. I wasn't allowed to watch cartoons or play video games. I have more in common with someone in their 90s than someone my age. And people younger than me? Might as well be extraterrestrial life.
Had to check in to make sure you said the letter right and haven't been seppified. Great video, good job avoiding saying the phones through gritted teeth
i think putting the heat on ‘phones’ or ‘social media’ is a cop out. some of the deepest friendships/conversations ive had were with friends i made online. i think social media can position you to feel unfulfilled in your relationships but with or without it I think it’s a matter of fear of rejection and being vulnerable like Jordie alludes to in the video.

This is funny because I don't like any of those shows. I grew up watching Beverly Hillbillies, Hogan's Heroes, A-Team, Dragnet, and other shows as reruns. In my 20s I watched cartoons for the first time, but didn't like adventure time at all. I was all about Regular Show. I was 23, which was the same age as Mordecai and Rigby in the first season. Now I just watch UA-cam.
Never watched any of these since I was really sheltered as a kid. The first time I even heard of the Simpsons and watched Cartoon Network was in late middle school, and now I don't have cable and can't watch it anyways. Seinfeld does sound good though (I'm gen Z)
It isn't phones, and it isn't social media. They definitely do not help, but to put all the blame on them is completely false. I know people who don't personally use social media, or overuse their phones. They still have these issues, just as much as the next person..
In light if this, what do you think of the people who overshare too quickly ie first meeting and they’re telling you intimate details about their mental struggles? Personally I find it is a turn off but wondering what jordies and others think.

Don't think this is exclusive to Zoomers, but have witnessed a Zoomer saying exactly that and getting her Dad to make the booking.
There's a difference between connection over hardship and trauma bonds, but I do agree with a lot of what you've said.
