    I just started using the Prismo last week. My results are completely different. I find it much easier to press than a standard metal filter, I get crema every time, and no grittiness (using a Capresso bur grinder between fine and extra fine). In your video you hit on all of the steps and instructions that Fellow recommends, but I would suggest three things that may improve your results. 1) Adjust you grind up a little till you eliminate the grittiness (if your grind is still making it through the screen you may be closer to a Turkish grind than an espresso grind), 2) for the stir I use a small spoon and stir vigorously till I see crema forming in the Aeropress, 3) push faster (I still think it's easier to push with the Prismo) - you want the air in the Aeropress to go through the puck at a high velocity.

      Paul Lievano thanks for the comment! Since this video has gained so much traction I’ll be revisiting the Primo in an upcoming video and I’ll be sure to take your advice when brewing it up again!

    I seem to be able to get crema pretty easily. I'm not really too worried about 'making espresso' - but I do like how it pushes the Aeropress a little more towards percolation. Although Adler says he experimented with more pressure, I definitely feel like I get a more satisfactory, I've seen the word focussed used, cup on a low wet time now.
    I'm not a coffee expert, I'm actually using pretty much the cheapest Arabica medium roast I can get (though I do grind with a Hario travel). I just want a drinkable cup in the morning and before gym and Prismo means I can get it within 90 seconds of grinding the beans.

    It makes "espresso-like" shots, And for my purposes that's just fine. I do have an espresso machine, but I don't want to use it everyday. I also like that when I'm brewing regular coffee, I don't need to use the inversion method in order to steep.

    I couldnt tell the difference between using it and just using fine coffee in the areopress . I got similar taste. Same pressure resistance. Same puck afterwards. Same amount of crema.

    I just followed the instructions and the first time got no crema and some grittiness but it did have an espresso-like mouth feel to me. I ground on 12 on my Virtuoso Preciso (the recommended starting point for Aeropress). Rather than increase my grind size, I decided to throw in a paper filter on top of the metal filter. This eliminated the grittiness and I did get some "crema". Much of it dissipated quickly though. It still had an espresso-like mouth feel to me.
    My main gripe with the prismo is that it required a lot of brute-force strength to get it on my aeropress. I had to use those jar-lid grippers to twist it on.

    when i use both metal filter and aeropress paper filter, i ended up with a concentrated coffee with extra step.
    well... at least that was another fun ways to brew a coffee.

    I used it yesterday and then today. With two different coffees. One had been roasted about 2 weeks ago, and the other one had been pretty old coffee (roasted prob a month ago) and I noticed a difference in the crema. The first coffee, which was much more fresh had crema and the second one did not. The flavor was also slightly different

    • @Sprometheus

      I recently used it a few more times with coffee about a week old, no luck on the crema though. But it did make a decent Americano-like coffee

      Before I saw this particular video I watched one [with no sound] using a primo. A crema was produced in that video and yet I think after watching this I’ll take a pass and continue on with my Aeropress. Thanks

      @@Sprometheus try this, i have been using my prismo since it was released, fresh ground per cup needed, i grind mine 2 clicks above finest on a burr grinder, place a paper filter over the included prismo metal filter.. this seems to create more pressure for me and i can get crema every single time. 1 minute max for soak time before pressing for me as well!

    Ive watched a few of these reviews and they tend to be split down the middle, some dont get crema and some do but yet follow the recipe... is it just based on slight differences in grind size/pressure on the plunger?

    I've been using this since it came out on preorder, and even grabbed an updated version just recently after my original much thinner (probably pre-release) version had issues with the filter bending and warping uncontrollably.
    I've tried every combination of grind, and both espresso roast and drip roast of beans, and every combination of roast date (from just a day or 2 up to a few weeks old). All of this with various combinations of more beans, to more water, to less+more to more+less, to different temps; even different agitation amounts with different brew times; even adjusting my own downward force for extraction..I have never once, ever, experienced crema as I've seen some get, and heard claims of also.
    Whatever magic other people are using I don't know. But i've used this about 50 times so far, and not once seen what I would consider crema on my shot. It's a strong coffee, that's all.

    • @Sprometheus

      This has been my experience as well. I feel like I'm pretty savvy, but I've yet to figure out how to get crema. It is basically just a small amount of concentrated coffee.

      It's because they're marketing the prismo as being more like an espresso than using an aeropress without one.
      A proper espresso will give you crema. So it's trying to replicate that, to give you a synthetic crema.
      Unfortunately, the only way you're going to get a genuine espresso, with actual crema is with an espresso machine. There's no way round that. It's the only thing that has the sufficient amount of pressure required to produce it.

      I’ve used it 2 mornings so far and I was so pleased to have crema in my cup. It just depends on the technique, I suppose. I loosely followed a method I saw by the inventor and I got great results.

    They say at least 30 seconds of stirring and it looks like the stream coming out when you press the coffee is shooting out sideways. Maybe you have a defective product or you're not pressing hard enough initially to force all the coffee into a puck in the beginning of the press. Nice video tho

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  6 років тому

      I recently tried it a few more times with the same outcome. I didn't watch the stream though, so maybe there is an issue there. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Maybe you grinded too fine? Well why didn't you explore that? You said you tried many different ways. Im doubting you did if you didn't even try another grind size? Especially with a pressure basket, you need a bigger grind size to extract it out properly.

    • @Sprometheus

      Porkchop's Papi basically the valve on the Prismo requires pressure to flow. So you can brew right side up with an Aeropress without having any drip out until you start your press.

      @Sprometheus  6 років тому +1

      Mitchel Evans a while back I’d be inclined to agree. But I’ve had some solid shots pulled in the 3-5 bar range. Nothing I’d be doing on my own. But it’s a whole different range of flavor and extraction due to a much much coarser grind.
