I live in SoCal, so we already saw the tomato plants TWO months ago in the big box store. Haha. I agree, land is expensive, I was able to start the seeds both indoor and outdoor, with obvious better result doing it indoor. One way I try to extend the season is replant the suckers, in case there is a spot of land became available.

For sure on the suckers.... They come too late for me to do anything with here.... But if I had an extended summer, I'd be planting them up for sure!

When I plant in the solo cup, I only put soil part of the way. Then, when the stalk has several sets of leaves and the top is above the cup, I just add more soil to take advantage of more roots growing off the stem. I start liquid feed (1/2 strength) after first set of true leaves, and until planting it in the ground. I plant them deeper again into the hole with all the slow release nutrients. Works for me.

My dad used to lay the tomato plants from the garden center on their sides, leaving about the top 6 or 8 leaves above ground. he would cover the stem with several inches of soil. When I had my community garden plot, I did the same thing. But, when I was planting in a more confined place like my fabric pot, I just dug a deeper hole. Since I can't do container gardening, I am looking into a different community garden that is closer to where I live.
