I had seen Maiden with DiAnno opening for UFO in 1980 at the Long Beach Arena. As I look back, it was an amazing show with the Killers lineup and also UFO with Paul Chapman. #RIPPaulDianno
I was 17 in 1980, and my friend worked in the record store at a mall in Calgary, AB. He called me and said you gotta come down here right away. An hour or so later in I walked in and my friend had set up a huge display of some new band right smack in front of the store as customers walked in. I will always remember dozens of copies of this band I never heard of called Iron Maiden, with the artwork featuring some whacked zombie with insane eyes under a street light. Buddy just smirked at me and said buy it. I already had a copy in my hands and was heading out the door. 40 minutes of wicked metal with a splash of punk greeted the turntable. I just turned 61 a few weeks before Paul passed. Don't have the vinyl and turntable anymore but brought out the CDs, Iron Maiden and Killers and gave them another listen in honor of Paul. Maiden remains one of my favourite bands of all time and those two Maiden records are absolute Killers.
Paul is the perfect lead singer for both of the first albums. He’s got a great, unpolished voice that turns soulful and gentle when needed. A favorite of mine that doesn’t have the typical Maiden sound is Prodigal Son. It’s more mellow and I love how he sings in it. God rest his beautiful soul.
I saw Iron Maiden five times with Paul, first time was before the first album in 1979. They were great live (still are of course) and Paul was exactly right for the band at that time. Great presence and attitude, and something different to the typical out of the box rock star, he was a key part of their success.
Piece of Mind was the first Iron Maiden album I bought. Then went back and discovered the first two albums. Now they are my favorite Maiden records. Thanks for organizing this, Pete. Enjoyed it. Rest in peace, Paul.
First gig I ever saw was Judas Priest, 9 Mar 1980. Iron Maiden were the support, it was a month before their debut album was released. Hence, Paul was the first singer I ever saw live. Blew me away, changed my life and I also still have the ticket. That debut is still the best thing they ever did. RIP, mate.
@@simondunphy6973 wow that's great.j saw Kansas in 76.i was 10.pig smoke was e feet thick outside.lol.i saw maiden in 82. first metal gig.i did see several 70s bands too the spinners ,earth ,wind & fire before the rock ,metal shows..prob because they came to the merriwether post pavilion that summer
On New years Eve 96/97 Paul D'annos Battlezone came 2 the dearly departed METROPLEX in downtown Atlanta. It was a good show. Although my memory of it is blurry. What isn't blurry is meeting Paul .He was very nice. He was talking 2 everyone . R.I.P Paul😒😒
Strongly recommend the South American Assault Live album by Killers, It has the best versions Paul did of early Maiden classics after leaving the band, accompanied by John Gallagher of Raven killing it on bass and Cliff Evans of Tank on guitar, pretty much a NWOBHM supergroup.
Saw Paul at a festival in Nottinghamshire, England just a couple of months ago. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. Crowd knew every word to every song
I saw Maiden with Paul at the Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland opening for Judas Priest. The arena was sold out. Then the following year at the same venue and the same two bands, Maiden was fronted by Bruce. Clive Burr also crushed it live on both shows.
I remember the first Iron Maiden album i ever heard was Piece of Mind (Spring 1985) I was coming up on 14 years old. I had never heard anything like this and was instantly blown away and hooked! Their first album I ever bought a short while later was Number of The Beast. Then I think it was Iron Maiden the 1st album. Of course pre internet you didn't know as much and had to rely on info from magazines or word of mouth. I too was like oh this guy was the first singer then! I LOVE those first 2 albums with Paul though! And I have fond memories of listening to Maiden Japan on cassette (yep all 5 songs!) As I would walk to and from work on my portable cassette player (I think it was a Sony Walkman) circa late 1985/1986. I literally wore that tape out! There was just something about that live album that I really loved and still do to this day! R.I.P. Paul you really were something. 🫡👍
I met Paul once in Sweden after one of his concerts when he signed autographs. He was truly nice and really funny. He is missed! Back in 1981 I was a teenager and the first song I heard with him was Running Free and I I loved Iron Maidens early albums (re Clive Burr as well).
The first three albums is the most metal they ever were, meaning those albums felt from the street and from the night. Later the records became more epic, bombastic and heavily produced and there is nothing wrong with that, but first three were something unto themselves. I think TNotB sounds a lot to me like it was written for Paul and I think it would have totally worked with him. RIP Paul Di'Anno.
Paul Di`Anno Ikon Metal man The 2 first Iron Maiden abums are so great Iron Maiden & Killers. My first Iron Maiden album was Killers still my favorite Iron Maiden albums. Iron Maiden Live In Japan EP 4 songs. But yes I have the 80`s Iron Maiden album are the best
killers is by far my favorite maiden album. easily the best sounding record they ever made. but, bruce singing twilight zone, murders in the rue morgue, the "live in italy 81 remember tomorrow (the maiden japan version with bruce's overdubbed vocal cello taped on) and another life is just pure ear candy. he never really got that vibe with all the other dianno era stuff, though. the full maiden japan show isn't the same souce materiel as the maiden japan ep. it's from a different night on that japan tour that was meant for broadcast. you'll notice a distinct difference in the banter and the performances, plus the sound and mix is completely different. my fav paul era maiden performance that's available is the summerfest 1981 broadcast....maiden is just "some new band from england" playing a late afternoon slot at a festival. there's a lot of hiccups throughout the set, but you can hear a HUNGRY band playing in front of a big audience where maybe a 1/4 have even heard of maiden and clearly owning the audience.
I was hoping Iron Maiden would have recorded a song featuring all three of their vocalists like Michael Schenkerfest did, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. R.I.P. Paul Di'Anno. He will be missed. 🪓🎤.
I met Paul in 2002 in the toilets at some bar in London where Hurricane Party were playing. We were washing hands. He seemed a bit hyper and was talking to anyone who was talking to him. No one was that interested in him. I mentioned how I liked his new album D'ianno. He said "oh yeah! what song?" I said "the song Nomad...'Religion is now an enemy it use to be a friend!'' " he went quiet as I think he was trying to catch out a sycophant. He told me and others how he had this band, Hurricane Party supporting him - I said yeah I saw him when they supported. He was limping around back then with his knee as we exited the toilets.
Nothing but respect for Paul, as well as the current and former members of Iron Maiden. Some people expressing disbelief that Paul would be fired from the band. He was given a chance to address his addictions, and it wasn't happening. You cant blame Iron Maiden for trying.
I don't know how to explain this, but i was a teen when i listened the debut and then Killers, and there are something magical that i felt in that years that remains till today, the same feeling happens when i listen restless and wild, Satan - court in the act, and this just happens with a few albums.
I saw Iron maiden on their first European tour at Forest National arena in Brussels Belgium on Sep 21st 1980 opening up for Kiss on their Unmasked tour. They had just released " Iron Maiden", I had no idea who they were. Also, it was my first live concert. I had never heard anything like this before. I was actually somewhat "scared" by the sound. I remember distinctly that Paul announced "Prowler" about 2 or 3 songs in. Floored me. Bought the album within the month and, well you know the rest of the story....
Also worth remembering the singles that weren't on the two albums; The Twilight Zone, Women In Uniform, Sanctuary and also the Maiden Japan ep. As Ryan rightly says, not picking sides, the first few Bruce albums are great but Paul is the man. Infused Maiden with a punk and new wave energy they never bettered. God bless Paul!
Maiden came to our small local venue in 1981. The council had installed a decibel meter which cut the power if the music got too loud. The council were snobby and ruled by our prestigious University. Well we stood there, the lights dimmed and the crowd cheered in anticipation for the band to hit the stage…….and the power cut! Paul went ape at the hall management. But we knew Maiden had made it when a couple of years later Phantom of the Opera was used in an advert for a British energy drink which starred Decathlon champion Daley Thompson
My memory is exactly the same as Ralph. I was 10 years old in 81 and a classmate had a Killers Tshirt. Luckily I had a cool mom that bought me the Killers album...In spite of the violent cover.. RIP Paul
I like the street vocals of Paul! love Bruce too but killers album is the deal. I know a dude who saw priest on stained class tour in front row.nobody has the old maiden sound. I saw the 82 priest maiden tour it was a damn 12.50.saw em in n.j.and n y. at the garden
My relationship with Maiden is strange, I have a love-hate relationship with them. Aside from Brave New World they haven't put out an album I like in my lifetime (since 1994). However, I fucking love the debut and Killers. The latter being my favourite album of all time - every song is great and sums up what heavy metal should sound like. I love Paul's vocals, and his legacy is not just those two albums and afterwards, it's every young metalhead who has listened to those albums and thought "fuck we need to sound like that!" Bands like Traveler, Angel Sword, Heavy Sentence in the NWOTHM are also a part of his legacy. Rest in Peace Paul.
Yeah the Nagoya Japan 81 concert has to be there best songs and versions are tops.innocent exile one of the best.i have cassette of maiden Japan.bummer the audio sucked on it.
The Di'Anno era is my favorite era of Maiden. I don't know why, it just hits me harder than most other Maiden albums (as great as they are). I rediscovered Paul's band Killers and that debut is awesome. Good classic Metal at a time when that was unpopular. I have always said that what Paul did with Iron Maiden was never matched or equaled in his career, unfortunately. The closest Paul ever came was Battlezone's album Children of Madness, easily the best thing he did after Maiden. R.I.P. Paul Di'Anno, he will be missed.
I remember watching Iron Maiden on MTV playing Wrathchild and I was blown away. This was when MTV was only on a few hours a day and I was hoping they would play the video. ua-cam.com/video/io4ObwuO24w/v-deo.htmlsi=yOoqDyjkON04ChRj
Amazing stream folks. Thanks! One thing though. I don't like people saying Paul had a punk vibe, let alone is a punk singer. I don't know how punk is perceived in the US, maybe it's different out there I don't know. But let me stress: it's not punk. Punk is shit. Punk is just playing badly, singing badly and behaving badly. In fact Iron Maiden hated punk at the time and still do. A&R people at the time told Harris 'well if you want to get a gig you have to cut you hair off'. Maiden couldn't get work in London because of that punk 'vogue'.
Never been a big fan of those first two albums. And one of the reasons is that i just don't like Paul's voice very much. He was a great human being though. Met him once and he was very kind and funny. Signed a lot of stuff and never gave me the feeling of being a nuisance. And without him Maiden wouldn't be the huge band that they are today. He was so important to the evolution of this band and he was the right voice at this stage for Maiden. Rest in peace Paul!
RIP Paul. I love the first two albums and was shocked at the time when Paul was outed of the band. "Number of the Beast" album was a huge disappointment, for me, it does not match the quality, the excitement and energy that I found with the first two albums.
Because Nicko cannot play anything like Clive Burr did. The drumming was so complex, Nicko just couldn’t do it. I too have put out my tributes to Paul, when I heard him in the first two LPs I never looked back

Nice job. Gang. Thank you. Count Ralph. Cool 🆒 story. Thanks again Pete for your time 👍💯
I saw Paul with Iron Maiden live as a supporting act for KISS in Germany in 1980.
I think I have the Tour Program from that. I'm going hunting the garage this weekend.
My father saw the same tour in the Netherlands
The first two Maiden albums are the only ones I ever listen to.
A sad loss. May he rest in peace.

Bought the 1st Iron Maiden when released at 1980. It is still my favorite Iron Maiden album.

Great tribute to a great singer. Can someone tell Rob Lisanti that Iron Maiden have played the song Iron Maiden at every show they have ever played!!
😂😂 yeah I’m tired of it. There’s so much more they can play.

That first lp by Iron Maiden had an iconic rawness to it like no other.
i wish they would re release the full version of maiden japan
Very near to me! Thanks for this guys! Awesome!
