- "Yellowstone" has spent four seasons unspooling many threads of Dutton family drama, but are the current plotlines going too far? Some viewers say yes - and here's why.
Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, has been a fan-favorite character throughout the run of the show, but she's also one of the series' most volatile. Fiercely loyal and emotionally fierce, she's often been the character most capable of tearing other people down.
Up until now, Beth's aggressive side has mostly been deployed for good reasons, but in episode 6 of season 4, she pulled out a knife, and just may have jumped the shark. Here's everything you need to know about what some fans are calling the Beth scene that went too far on "Yellowstone."

Who's your favorite "Yellowstone" character?
Beth, easily.
Beth our red head spit 🔥 FIRE!!!😈
kacy or rip.
My liver says Rip!!! But Beth puts the. B in beautiful tough bitch
Mo and Thomas. Hope John should respect them more. They have proven themselves to be a great ally. And then there Beth. Who I would never want to get in the wrong side of lol
The dress shop scene is my all time favorite.
Yes it was a classic.
Mine too
LOVED it and I thought they could have gone even farther with it.
Mine is when she flashes her breast. Not gonna lie, she has a nice rack.
I don't think Beth could EVER go too far....
Here is why beths character did not go too far or even break from the norm.. if you recall in a previous season beth went out of her way to be alone with the governor just so she could threaten her about sleeping in her mothers bed. Beth doesn't srem to hate the governor in the least and doesnt care if her dads screwing her.she just doesnt want it in her mothers home.
None of her business what her dad does in his home though.
@@ethanweeter2732 TOO LATE.......LOL
I think the "fans" implying there some dark hidden family secret is more gross than her holding a knife. But to each his own.
Her character is unlike anyone else on TV at this time. Very strong and refreshing.
She sure is
No…. she is straight up crazy!!! There is a reason she is the only character like her on television. Any adult child that involves herself in her parents love life, has something seriously wrong with them!!!
@@ritawhite1335
Agreed !! She is a great "character" in a TV show that is an on-going "story".
She is nothing to aspire to be,..she is nothing to seriously admire or emulate.
These people are scumbags.
@@stricknine8623 Whoa - it's fiction lol

How could you not understand that I'm referring to the characters ?
I trust the writers over this dudes opinion. Beth is a fantastic character.
Yea, I didn't see any problem with that episode. It was typically Beth. She finds a strange woman in the house with dad and is suspicious. Responds the way Beth does.
She is garbage. She ruins the show
Yes she is
I disagree. Her character sucks.
Beth vs Summer was the best scene of the season.
I love everything about Beth… including the knife scene and think it was totally fitting! Wouldn’t change a thing. It’s the mix of humor and darkness and violence that makes the show unique.
Merry Christmas 🎄 ma’am ,how are you doing today, may God be with you ..actually i'm just using this moment to appreciate you for been a Great fan of me. thanks for listening to my music, downloading music online supporting my music career. thanks 😊 so much i really appreciate God bless you and your Family it’s your favorite musician Tim McGraw🎶🎶🎵🙏.
Gee wow - a woman who was literally blown up might not be super balanced? It's called a trauma response. Let the show and the season play out.
Beth is hands down one of the strongest characters on the show Yellowstone, due in no small part to Kelly Reilly's talent as well as the writers. She is to Yellowstone what the character Mike was to Breaking Bad. In this era of cancel culture, I refuse to take this UA-cam hack seriously.
Strongest? More like weakest by far. Her insecurity is causing her to act over-the-top "tough" to compensate for her mental and emotional insecurities for being born female in a man's world. She was taught to be that way by her mother when she was a girl. Feminist women like this often display overly exaggerated displays of ugly crudeness to make up for their own insecurities of being born female. She's overcompensating and that's not strength. That's actually weakness. Underneath this cloak of false bravado is a very insecure and broken girl. You see glimpses of it whenever she's alone and crying to herself or drinking alone and crying because she feels she has to hide away her femininity and emotions around others. She often wipes away her tears and sniffles whenever someone walks into the room - particularly a man. Bottom line, she's insecure and being a crude foul-mouthed and inconsiderate person doesn't make anyone "strong" or "tough." It's all an act and it's very telling.
Kevin, you're just proving that she's a strong character in the show. She's so strong you seem to think she's real. You've done a psychological exam and everything...lol
@@newhope4me- Sorry, I don't see her character as "strong" .. just insecure and emotionally wrecked.
You are giving him too much credit!!!!!!
@@kevinmccallister1343 it’s a character in a movie, get over it!
Don’t EVER say Yellowstone has gone too far. EVER.
People are weird LOL the REASON she acted in the manner she did was to test the girl’s mettle as being involved with John. That’s how I saw it.
I didn't think Beth was jealous. You have to realize that the ranch was attacked . So this woman is in her kitchen she did ask her "who are you" Instead of Summer telling her "I'm a guest" she immediately gets bit@#y and says "Who the h#ll are you" Sumner acting like SHE knows the place and giving Beth serious attitude is what drove Beth to have this reaction. What I thought was cringy was when Summer tried to make Beth jealous by kisses John in a weird way and acting like a child. So ....The scene with summer didn't make any sense..John wouldn't have felt sorry for her. He doesn't trust people so quickly especially after being attacked so. It was a sad attempt to make these characters have a connection which just felt forced and ridiculous.
At the moment when Summer said Who the hell are you. She probably was afraid it was the wife
@@Campjeans yeah but your still in someone else's house. Whether it was wife or not... She was still just a guest lol. But Beth didn't act jealous though she was just being protective plus after everyone was attacked and her father was no wherein the kitchen- you answer Beth fast lol
so, so true. great reply!
@@toulamaccrue9906 yes, I agree. Beth has been through so much just trying desperately to please John and keep the enemies away from him. Beth has been assaulted, beaten, burned when permanent scarring and every bit of it has been the result of her trying to hold onto the ranch her Daddy loves. She wouldn't have ever been subjected to all that abuse if she had stayed wherever she was and not come back home to help her Daddy fight to keep the ranch.
It's a show. You know... entertainment. She is the best character on the show.
Loved this scene. Too many are just overthinking it instead of enjoying it!!!! Go Beth!!!!
I wouldn't change any Beth scene....Kelly Reilly is rocking this role!
Kelly Reilly is doing the best job with a character that anyone has probably ever done ! Top notch performances !
That's a strong independent woman who takes care of her family and not stay at home and wait for a check , but wants to call the shoots. Love this woman
She's incredible
She is her father daughter. But John is alot more seasoned. When she is his age she will have more edges to her.
Spirit, she's not real. And her character hardly shows her sitting at home. She was blown up in her office
She's weak AF! She acts over the top ugly and that's not strength. It's severe insecurity. She can't even eat at the main dinner table cause that room upsets her for whatever reason. Rip had to calm her down (cause she a woman and emotionally unstable) and come up with an alternative place to eat at a different table in the living room. Beth couldn't stomach her own medicine when the homeless boy dished her up a taste of it once in the car. Then she was ready to throw him back on the streets and acted all butthurt over it. She is still afraid of horses and many other things. Her mother lied to her and told her she was better than all the males. I've yet to see how. She's an alcoholic and a chain smoker also. None of the boys chain smoke or drink heavily every night. She still lives with Daddy and it's his money and land wealth that gives her any amount of power or leverage. So the boy was right in his crude joke. She has basically sucked 🐓her whole life - her father's.
Well Kevin, next weekend you can watch the show starting from episode 1 and you'll see how much she has done for her father's land and money to be ahead of all the vultures out there trying to get it. Now if it bothers you that she smokes and drinks but get results at the end of the day in a crude and bossy manner, men have been doing it for centuries she just makes it look sexy. Remember, county women don't beat around the bush. I guess it's only acceptable when Hillary Clinton does it,,, yuk
Beth is showing she's the only one prepared and capable to take over the Ranch
Are you kidding me with this?!? She’s the best character ever.
Wow, whoever wrote this really wants us all to hate the Beth character as much as he/she does. Sorry pajama boy, not happening.
Too far?
Kacey: Hold my hat!
I love Beth. SHe deserves an EMMY. I think that Beth and Summer will become allies, my opinion.
Merry Christmas 🎄 ma’am ,how are you doing today, may God be with you ..actually i'm just using this moment to appreciate you for been a Great fan of me. thanks for listening to my music, downloading music online supporting my music career. thanks 😊 so much i really appreciate God bless you and your Family it’s your favorite musician Tim McGraw🎶🎶🎵🙏
Whatever "moment" they were going to point out, I knew it WASN'T gonna be her drunk, naked and cooling off in a horse trough! 😁 That completely caught me off guard... in a good way.
More like a country girl hot tub. And yes the view was very hot.
Yellowstone is a badass show
Fantastic segment. Funny as hell. Beth rocks
Beth's👑badassness never get's old.
Beth as had two attempts on her life. Feeling responsible she had something to do with her mothers death and lets not forget the mother was extremely hard on Beth because she thought thats what Beth needed growing up as a woman, tough love and all that. Beth was was fucked up from the start so its not surprising to see her this unhinged but focused on what she needs to do.
Beth is critical to the YS story... what a fantastic role!! 👏👌💯
I silence the sound everytime she opens her foul mouth.
I thought it was spot on for Beth. Her personality continues to show the effects of losing her Mama at a young age and constantly around men all the time & no female role model. Taylor still hasn't revealed what happened to their Mama but continues to insinuate it was somehow Beth's fault. Her personality also comes from the constant need for attention. It's not just the attention that her Daddy gave to Summer, which I don't like anyway, she didn't like the governor schmoozing with her Daddy either. I love the maternal instinct that she is slowly starting to develop. I think Taylor is doing a BRILLIANT job with a very complex character and Kelly is constantly hitting every mark. These actors should have awards all over their walls for bringing these characters to life.
Evelyn's death was revealed in the first season, Beth scared the crap out of her horse which reared into Evelyn's horse and knocked them both over, crushing their mom and killing her, because Beth was too scared to ride properly, despite being told numerous times to calm down. It's the whole reason she hated horses.
She was killed in riding accident
In this episode Beth does come across with a few screws loose. She tries to play the mama bear but has no cubs.
I loved that scene. Not all long term fans are softies that wake up every day thinking about what they will complain about in the internet.
Kelly Reilly is doing amazingly well after all she’s been through as Beth. If she needs to go one dimensional for now...you go girl.
Luckily, I just watch for the scenery.
Don't complain about actors or actresses for what that do on the screen.
They are following the script and it's called acting.
When you get drawn into their character. That means that they are good at what they do.
Beth is THE Badass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still love Beth's Roll. With all she has endured in the first 3 episoces, being a bad ass looks good on her.
This is Beth in her most pure form - fiercely protective and loyal to her family 💪😉😃😃
For God sake just watch the show. If you don’t like it, watch something else!
Beth became an overrated character in Season 4 💯
Leave her alone I think she is doing great
It’s called evolution of a character, she found a man that accepts her for all her flaws and now she is showing confidence in all areas of her personality.
I really don't think Beth is becoming cartoonish and 2 dimensional. This scene made a whole lot of sense considering people attacked her family and her family is constantly in danger. Then you see a random person in your house? Yeah I'd react similarly
Just finished season 1 and I don't understand the criticism. this exactly who beth is. did fans just forget what she was like in season 1?
It seems as though Beth could give Gemma Teller of SOA a run for her money
they would tear eachother to pieces.
The most contrived part of season 4 was the "adoption" scene with the kid at the hospital. Not touching, not believable and mostly, not LEGAL.
I love Beth but so far this season has been a dud ! To many plugs for 1883 and not enough Yellowstone!
and the whole 1883 mess.
Beth just saying anything to anyone without any repercussions is definitely getting old. I'd like to see them focus on her other sides, whether its when she's home with Rip and Carter or if she's at work plotting and strategizing how she's gonna save the ranch. I hate that her and Jamie can't work together to do this. Hell, Beth and Kayce don't really have any scenes together. How come we can't see them interact with each other? Other than the dinner table I don't recall them talking much. Oh she did say he shouldn't have his family on the ranch...the same ranch she lives on. I love Yellowstone but this season has definitely has me scratching my head. At the end of the day, I'm just glad Jimmy has rebounded from Mia. Oh and welcome back Avery aka pouty lips. You are gorgeous. Monica should be worried because Kayce is fighting his inner demons to be a good boy. Hahahaha.
She couldn't stand the taste of her own nasty medicine when the kid dished her up a taste of it in the car ride back to the ranch! Then she played the poor victim and was ready to throw him back on the streets all because she got butthurt over something she does to everyone else all the time!
She is by far the weakest character and woman I've ever seen on a TV show. Not sure why so many women see being ugly and crude towards people, especially men, as strength? I guess that's what radical feminism has brainwashed them to believe.
I don't think being crude or ugly towards people makes anyone strong or even intelligent. They usually do it because they are insecure and trying to overcompensate for their own shortcomings. She's all talk but needs Rip to walk her walk for her.
@@kevinmccallister1343 I found her attitude the turn off for me in Season 1, but I was advised to give it another try. I don't see why some people view, rude & unbalanced as strong. There are moments that she is strong for sure, but shooting her mouth off and being condescending isn't those times.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 - She's a weak person and character 9 times out of 10. Sadly, too many people think ugly, foul mouthed women are strong, especially when being ugly and foul mouthed towards a man. Feminists love that nonsense because they are misandrists in general and want to encourage women to be ugly and rude towards men while demanding men be nice and respectful towards women. But Beth is all mouth and has no muscle to back up her bite, unless she gets Rip (a man) to do her dirty work for her. She almost got rraped by a man until Rip saved her. She wasn't strong enough to overcome a man physically. And she was very cruel to Carter in the last episode by telling him she's not his mother the way she said it. She loves to hurt feelings but hates it when her own get hurt. Like when Carter gave her a taste of her own medicine in the car, she couldn't stand it and wanted Carter gone. Then she blames Jamie too much for her own faults. Blames him for why she can't have kids because he didn't tell her they sterilize women who have abortions. Well, she wanted the abortion and she could have asked her own questions but didn't. That's her own damn fault. SHE (and the abortion doctor) killed Rip's baby - not Jamie. So her threatening Jamie in the last episode that she'd tell Rip that Jamie killed his baby was BS!
@@kevinmccallister1343 I hated her from near the get go, pilot ep. She was shooting her mouth off to the guy she was sleeping with, then ripping into her father that everyone hates & blames her for her mothers death. She was just nasty and rude to everyone she came across, and belittled people and one of my co-workers (naturally a woman), thinks that makes her just so amazing and wonderful. Sounds like a feminist in that she gives it out then cries when its done to her.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 - Yep, she's weak and acts ugly and tough to try to compensate for her own shortcomings in life. Not sure how so many people, especially women, see her as a strong woman, when so many women would say that any man who acted like that is a weak and insecure man or suffers from small man syndrome. She reminds me in a way of a female version of Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) from the movie Goodfellas. Small man syndrome galore and over the top violent and ugly to everyone to make up for his small size. Also known as Napoleon complex.
The word caricature is over used when describing Beth. She is fiercely loyal, loves to the bone and will not tolerate people messing around in her home and she will address a direct or indirect threat head on. Talk about a strong devoted family member. She and Rip make you understand that love really does exist. He wanted her there when he left and he loved her being there when he got home.
My husband and I LOVE Yellowstone. Beth to me hands down holds her own. We love the writing and have enjoyed all 4 seasons. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. As they say they are like A**h***s we all have one.
Don’t agree because Beth is amazing
Beth is a firecracker I wouldn't change a thing let her roll like she wants to roll
I thought this was hilarious!!! And why is Summer holding a gallon of milk if she is a vegan?!?🤔
I think Beth is doing s great job, its just a good show. Now if we can get someone to take out Jamie and his biological father, it would be great. The Duttons would finally win a big one.
Jamie is the only decent person IN this family. His father is trash but he hasn't done a damn thing to cause the Duttons to treat them like they do.
@@teampenit If Jamie was a real person I am fairly certain he would be diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder. I think his biological dad would be considered a narc too. I get that the entire family is mentally and emotionally unwell, but Jamie is such a "people pleaser" that he is not only a danger to the family he grew up with, but a danger to himself. Whenever there is even a slight risk of judgement from outsiders, he completely changes his viewpoints on a whim to please the room. He cannot stand to not have people like him and stroking his ego, even for a second. When he gets called out, he immediately says the person calling him out is lying and he behaves recklessly. His charisma and suave way of presenting himself in a grandiose manner makes me trust him even less. At least the rest of the Duttons are direct about what they want and how they are gonna get it. John most definitely contributed to all of his children's issues but I think Jamie has the same sickness that his biological dad had.
Wow these critics know nothing! She is sooo multi faceted and is a very complex woman.
Notice these are mostly people from reddit posting these negative comments lol...smh beth is amazing she balances out the family
I am disappointed by Beth's weird re-descent into madness. She supposedly overcame the alcoholism and psychotic tendencies but now she is right back where she started from? too bad and kind of boring.
I really didn't even think that scene was that crazy lol
Beth totally worked the scene. She would pick the governor or someone closer to her father’s age. Loving Beth this season.
you don't remember her telling the governor to stay away or she'd destroy her?
Beth is still one of the best actors on Yellowstone….and yes she’s like most girls ,ladies who hasn’t seen their father date is jealous of another woman….this not unusual,,,,,so please stop this not the first time a daughter or even a man gets protective of a parent…plus her father made her the bad girl …… now cause he got a piece of as he’s ready to kick her out after asking her and Rip to move in because he was lonely……..shame on Dutton her dad she was happy in her house a week ago with rip ….So dad should have left Beth ,Rip, Carter in the other house as a family …..
Love Beth❤
Welp, I too, wouldn’t take too kindly to finding a strange, half dressed woman walking around like she’s at home, peering you up & down “who tf are you?” When it’d be I, the actual resident, who HAS the right to ask HER. Whether Beth told dad to get laid or not, you don’t just act like a squatter with rights like Summer came across. I don’t see it THAT out of line imho🤷🏻♀️ I have a hunch that those who find Summer’s behavior defensible probably WAS a summer back in their day lol. Reminds me of why I hate having any “welcome” signage on the outside of the house, I don’t want you feeling like you can help yourself to my home just because you’re literate. You’re going to have to be invited to be “welcome”, I’m wacky that way I guess 😬
Kelly is the best actress ever.
the thing about the knife scene makes me think of when the Governor spent the night with John back previously and how Beth threatened to take her down if she ever slept in her mother's bed again. Telling John to get some *** is on thing, seeing another woman in that situation is another. I think she was feeling one thing and saying another to cover it
Her character ONLY lost her calculated control because it involved Daddy. You do the math.
You are wrong . Beth is the best !
I like Beth ! A lot !❤❤❤❤
I have considered Beth a villain this whole time. Watch how she treats her employees. She is horrible.
Me too
I don’t know what about acting like an entitled brat is attractive
But real power/strength doesn’t have to be so loud and classless
And the episode in the kitchen was super cringe worthy
A grown woman that is upset about her single dad having an overnight visitor
It did not seem like an endearing sentiment of father/daughter
I was thinking John seemed to eat it up …
That’s called enmeshment
To me and gross
Great plot twist would be a daughter of John she didn’t know about coming into the picture that had some tact and class to give her a run for her Daddy’s money
Even the way she said daddy was gross
And that he didn’t get super upset from the beginning
The scene was disturbing to me
Interesting part is we all have different perspectives as we are allowed to and it’s interesting to hear how other people took that scene. The writer did a good job at invoking a conversation.
But I’m definitely not a Beth fan
Absolutely, no questions asked.
@The Lioness I've said the same thing over and over. She's not even remotely likable and there's nothing powerful about her.
Being a father of 4 daughters it was dark comedic to me. But I understand how women think. Daughters anyway.
I Love Yellowstone!!!! I can’t tell you when I have been so excited about watching it!!!! It’s all I have besides raising my gramdchkldren . A life of love honor and protect tho their life throws them curveballs they narrowly end up defeating them!!!
Strongly agree with Beth! The stranger... in her house... parroting her question and distain... got the reaction most Texans and apparently folks from Montana would have given her... minus the gun! Little woke Dorothy learned she was not in Kansas Wait! California any more when she ended up all expenses paid in her orange jumpsuit care of Beth Dutton! No Dorothy... Not in California no more!
Take any of the facets of this fantastic character - Beth - and they're pretty much in line with the extremes of RL people, just more dramatically presented in Yellowstone out of dramatic necessity!
beth is still the best, i loved how she brought the knife out, bein protective over her father and it wasent wierd
Reminds me of same show by Seridan in sons of anarchy. Think I already know the ending. To much over kill. Now just catching the highlights of it all.
everyone should aspire to be Beth, instead of aspiring to be a doormat. and if someone cringes, fuck em.
Really, that's the scene? I could think of 3 this season that were way worse. But I'm not bitching.
What kind of society are we turning into? A bunch of whiney babies. Don't like the show? Easy solution, don't watch it. 👌
Soy boy🥴
There are more who love the character than hate her. She behaves how many WANT too.
Beth is perpetually wracked with guilt over her mother's death, which she thinks was her fault. The character seems to bounce between self destructive tendencies and over protection of the family that died with her mom.
Remember how the character treated the governor when her father was sleeping with her? The relationship with the governor ended when she put on one of the deceased wives robes (which are apparently still in the bedroom closet).
This entire wonderful series really takes the scenic route through major family dysfunction.
Beth Dutton, Kelly Riley not the same person I like the actress, and she plays the role perfectly as the writer writes it and the director directs it I've been watching everything she's done, and gets better every year
Rip I Love ❤️ Love you I’m 52 years of age and you make my liver quiver and my inner thighs tremor!!!!!! My heart burns with desire I hope the makers of Yellowstone keeps coming!!!! Kevin listener I love ❤️ you too
You know it seems like everyone in this Yellowstone has their own arrogance about them but if you got it flaunt it!!!
Beth's character jumped the shark for me when they blew her up. It was a bridge too far. It would have been better it she threw the package out the window where it exploded in the air, but didn't hurt anybody.
The writers need to listen to the fans!
Beth Dutton is the next Chuck Norris
Totally disagree. Beth has been beat up and blown up, leaving her physically and mentally scarred for life, yet she still fights through it all. I think in season 4 she is a run away train looking to run over everyone and anyone that seems the least bit of a threat to her father and their family.
Its just Looper trying to drum up drama when there isn't any. Looper knows full well, drama gets views. Even when its misplaced drama.
Beth is the greatest character on the show, she can do no wrong, no Beth, no show!
I’ve been saying since season 3 that Beth was headed off the deep end.
What surprises me is the fact that so many people like her character. For me the best character is so far over the top that it's not believable.
Beth anytime she's hero...
It was a great scene.
So do I!
I’m not disappointed, more Beth Looper
I Love Beth
Beth abhors any semblance of family or happiness since she cannot have either, and Rip is her only port in a constant storm. She tolerates most of it, but there are times like at the dinner table, where she simply cannot keep the demons at bay.
I LOVE Beth. I LOVE her CHARACTER. GUTS in a woman is refreshing.
You may but I love it all
When you go to social media to look for oppositional quotes from random people to make your point, you've lost journalistic credibility.
Love Beth character !!!
The kitchen scene was amazing
Beth is fantastic leave her alone
