Installed rear and front cameras onto the Can Am Maverick - Now I can see what I'm driving into!

  • I'm using the Rockford Fosgate MX3 head unit (Marine/UTV) that has the optional backup camera input.
The cameras and rocker switches I bought off of Amazon.
The double pole double throw rocker switch sends 12VDC to each camera depending on the direction you flip it and also connects that video signal to the single camera input on the Rockford Fosgate heat unit.
The backup camera is self explanatory.
I added the front one for when I crescent a steep hilltop and need to see what's over the top, whether it is the trail or a drop off!

Nice to see the new Fosgate head units have that! - freakin cool.
If you wanna get real fancy - look at the AEM dash which works over can bus.. they've also got a video input from what I remember.. spendy though

Yeah these things can easily become a money pit. HA HA
And there are several levels of these Fosgate heads units. I had to select the one with the video input.
The bro in law got a Polaris with the Fosgate factory installed. But that model did not have the video input.

I Wonder if it’s possibly to register a cannam in California with the smog laws. Do u have smog laws or inspections in Arizona ? How much is reg & insurance ?

These can be street legal here and I am looking into it.
      This has a catalytic converter.
I think I just need to add a horn and I will be ready.

I need info on the diodes. Where you got them and how you added them into the circuit.

Diodes can be used like check valves. Your positive feed into the one end (anode) and out the end with the white stripe (cathode) to power that device. It prevents power supplied to the one device from sending power backwards through the diode to the other. You can just use general purpose diodes from Amazon to be easy.
I had to look in my video to find it at 2:00 to remember what you were talking about because I forgot about it.
If you use one camera you don't need any of that. I just came up with a way to have my stereo backup camera input trigger work from either camera but not backfeed to the unused camera.
The diodes left out wouldn't stop it from working tho. You'd just be sending power to both cameras and the backup camera trigger input of the Fozgate (what makes the Fozgate switch to camera input). The other pole of the switch would still send the desired camera video signal to the video input of the fozgate. I just added the diodes because I have them and to power just the one camera at a time.

@hackfreehvac ya I know what they do but where did you get them, the model number, and specs.

@@Buckbuster88 *General purpose switching diodes*. There are a zillion part numbers/specs that will work.
Just search for that and they will work.
It is just a very low power signal input so a low rating will work and one that is a higher rating than is necessary will work. Just don't get a *zener diode* or anything like that. Just look for a general switching diode.

@@hackfreehvac could you please make a video or a wiring diagram of how your wired the cameras in independently? I am wanting to do the same thing, but cannot find any info on it. Thanks.

It has been almost 2 years now so I do not remember specifically however the way the head unit works is it has one component video input and one 12V input that tells it to switch to the backup camera when it gets 12V
So to wire two cameras into it I use a double pole double throw switch.
One pole of the switch has 12V feeding it's two normally open poles and the common pole to the 12V input to the head unit. So if you move the switch up or down from center it always sends 12V so the head unit switches to camera input.
The other pole of the switch has one camera video signal wire to each normally open pole. The center common goes to the video input. All shielded grounds tied together.
So now if you flip the switch from center to up it sends 12V to the head unit and sends the front camera video signal to the video input.
Switching it down sends 12V and connects the rear camera.

Looks like the Can Am is street legal now??

Just needs a horn and I should be set.
I'm going to do it if I can.
We were just up in the forest and there were about 100 of these things up there.
People were driving them on the highway from camp and down to the store as needed.

I have one. That was almost the first thing I installed.
