490R/498T all day, everyday for me. Owning several Les Pauls at the same time and gigging for over a decade…they’re the best sounding, most versatile set Gibson offers IMO.
They are my favorites too. And apperently Gibson thinks they're their best. Gibson puts the 490/498 set in the Custom Shop Les Custom after all, and that's a 5000 dollar guitar without any historic aspirations and relicing mumbo-jumbo. Also, Gibson obviously once deemed the 490/498s a considerable upgrade over the previous t-tops and the even the original PAFs. Vintage is not better by definition.
57s sound more subdued and less piercing to the ears without being muddy. However, the 490 neck when played dirty in the video had really nice distincti bass notes. I wonder if I should get a 490 neck and a 57 bridge!
Both are fantastic pickup sets. Hard to choose one because they serve different purposes but the juiciness and brightness of the 57 classic win for me here.
Interestingly, I have a Les Paul Traditional with 57's and a Les Paul Special Faded with the 490R/498T combination. Because the Les Paul Traditional has a maple cap I think the body resonance is brighter, so the more middy tone of the 57's is brightened a bit. The pickups in each guitar suit the individual guitar materials and seem to balance out very well.
thank you so much for this. i've been going back and forth on whether to swap the 490R/498Ts out of my '96 SG for something a little sparklier, like the 57s... your video made me realize... they're both great for different things. beautiful. as a total aside: i've had the guitar for 20 years, and it feels wrong somehow to try and change it's tone at this point. i think i'll just have to get a new one :) thanks for your help!
Although I prefer the 498s dirty tones, I prefer the '57's. Would rather finagle an EQ, dirt and amp settings for the tone I want rather than give up the versatility of the 57s clean semi clean tones.
Crazy reading the comments. Some that have the 57s want the 490r & 498t and the ones that have the 490r & 498t want the 57s! Both sound great in there one right. Best thing is have Two Gibson's with both humbuckers! Cheers 👍🏻😎🤘
Was trying to find out if I should swap my 490 set for 57 classics in my Tribute, since I vaguely remembered liking the 57 Classics in my LP Classic I had once. Good thing I waited. As much as the 57 classic are praised, in this comparison they fall flat because of an annoying high mid peak that dominates their sound. It dawned on me that this was the reason I selled the LP Classic in the first place. The 490 are much more well balanced and versatile, while still giving a vintage sound. I quite enjoy how my Tribute sounds so why change a running system? Only because of the often stated opinion in forums and on YT, that the 490er set is inferior, did I even consider the swap. Saved me some money, so thank you!
I got a Tribute not long ago, even before I bought it I had in mind to change the pickups right away to put some SD instead, the more I played with 490R-490T the more I liked it, and with the way I tweaked these pickups I wouldn't change it for anything. The chambered body which comes with Modern series make the highs sound airy and the chords then to be slightly more blended (it's very subtle though). Outside of few metal high gain setting I had in the past I really got the best setting I could imagine to have with the Tribute.
Nice comparison. I think the 490R/498T pickup set from Gibson is way underrated. I prefer the '57 Classics though as I think they offer more picking dynamic input to the player and more tonal complexity. I especially prefer the original '57 Classics from the mid-90s thru early-2000's. Many people don't know that Gibson altered the '57 Classics' specs around the time they introduced the Burstbuckers to differentiate them more. The 498T is a pretty hot pickup compared to the '57 Classic. Some may prefer that.
Thank you! Yes I agree - the 490R/498T is very underrated. I didn't know that Gibson changed the 57 specs - how are the older ones different from current production sound wise?
Yes, very underrated. I didn't like that much about Duncan JB in my Tokai les paul so i try Gibson 498T and that was the ticket for me. I think 498T is just right for heavy and rock music but can do other styles too pretty easily if player use guitar volume.
That's also why they released the 57 classic plus for the bridge pickup. Have a set of the 57's and plus in my Epiphone, and still have the 490R and 498T in my 79 Standard.
@@michaelkeudel8770 The 3 guitars I have with the original '57 Classics all have just the regular ones, not the "plus" and they work fine for me...more than fine actually. I have no need for the "plus", but I wouldn't be opposed to it. My style of play tends towards heavier classic rock and blues.
490/498 dont get enough credit for how balanced they are, and the 498 really does the whole "modern sound without being too metal" thing very well. With that said, they're not even in the same ballpark. The '57s are real vintage-style, save for the wax potting, and the dynamics are greater, the transients are significantly more present, and IMO there are few greater neck pickups in a LP than a '57.
You nailed it. The 498 is a flat out ‘modern’ voiced pickup. If you’re a precision picker it’s great. If you’re a classic Hendrixy style player, the 57s are far more balanced.
I prefer the 57s overall, but lowering the pickups then adjusting the pole pieces a bit on the 490s have helped balance the sound a bit for me. I’ve gotten them pretty close to the 57s.
How do you mean? Any measurements etc you could share with me? I got two SGs, one with 57s and one with 490. I would love to have the one with 490 sound more like the one with 57s 😎🤘

It seems you've never used the volume and tone knobs. The "ice pickyness" of the 498T can be easlily toned down by lowering the volume just enough. And then if you need more power, turn the volume back up.
