Yea!! I had our shop mechanic take the negative battery cable off (and he counted for about a minute) and put it back on. It worked!! Thanks for posting this solution. Edit: 2018 Crosstrek
Just tried this on our 2015 Subaru Forester and it worked! Thanks so much! Thought I was going to spend a sunday afternoon checking all the fuses. Fixed in five minutes!
Yup same thing on my 2015 Subaru Forester. The battery was drained completely and when I boosted to start radio didn't work anymore. same error message. The solution at the end actually worked. got tunes again. Thanks
This worked on my wife's 2016 crosstrek. I can't believe it. She was saying the display and back up camera wasn't working so I disconnected the ground on the battery and it didn't fix it. Removing both and discharging all electricity and putting the wires together worked. Unbelievable. Thanks for sharing.
You are my hero! Worked on my 2015 Forester. I disconnected the negative terminal, then did the brake horn thing. Didn't need the 10 second terminal touch. Saved me big dealer bucks!
Hooray! I so disappointed the dealership didn't just do this when I came in, they lost a customer...of course I was only a part-time customer, but still, no more!
I have tried a few things even a mechanic did but I did just this and it worked like a miracle!!! I did slowly start it like stop at each mode for a few sacs before fully starting. Thank you thank you a drive from NY to TX would have sucked with out a radio!
THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH for posting this video!!! YOU ARE OFFICIALLY MY HERO!!! 🎉 I have a 2015 Subaru Forester, and my car battery died a week ago when my car was getting detailed. After I got my car back, the radio had quit working, and that error message was displayed: Please Check Audio System. I commuted to work for a week with no music or news, and it was a huge bummer! 😫 Then my battery died again yesterday, and when the guy from AAA showed up to give me a jump, I asked him if he had time to try this technique I saw in a UA-cam video to restore my radio. He agreed to help, and I played him your video. We tried the first method with no success-just like you. Then we tried the second method, and I started my car, and to our complete joy and amazement-IT WORKED!!! My radio and Bluetooth are once again working. I just can’t thank you enough! It would have cost a lot of money if I had taken it to a Subaru dealership. I really appreciate you sharing this information and helping people. BTW…I wanted to try this by myself, but I wasn’t strong enough to disconnect the battery terminal connections, so I was planning to ask a friend for help. But the AAA guy ended up helping me instead. Also, yes! I am getting a new car battery…in case anyone was wondering! LOL. 🤣
Wonderful story, I’m so glad it worked! I don’t know why it doesn’t work by just disconnecting the negative, seems like it should but it needs that extra step, in most cases at least. And it does make me so mad how much the dealership wanted to charge…I bought the car from them…I strongly believe they should’ve fixed it for free
Just like most other comments, simply disconnecting the neg terminal did not fix the radio. I had to follow the complete procedure of disconnecting both terminals, pressing brake and horn, then touching the two terminal leads together and then reconnecting to the battery, PRESTO!!! Thanks amigo for sharing the information
Purchased a 2015 in a auction. New battery, no radio, everything else worked. I followed the advise of disconnecting the neg, then pos battery terminal, entering the car, pressing the brake and horn at same time, then touching the positive and negative wires together, prior to reconnecting them. I then reconnected the terminal cables and it worked. Radio is like new.
I want to thank you for your 'tech advice' on how to fix the radio on a Subaru Forester. I own a 2015 Forrester, a few months ago the radio just stopped working, this seems to be an inherent problem with Subaru's, saw this in a Consumer report magazine a couple of months ago. But they did not give a fix just reported it. I took my Forrester to the dealer and the young lady service writer without batting an eyelid said " That will be $148.00 diagnostic fee " I said " No Thank you", I will drive the car without a radio." Came home checked the fuses and they all seemed OK. So I let it be for the past 5 months and this morning went on the internet and found this video of yours, I was sceptical at first, but I thought no harm done, I will try it. first I disconnected the negative terminal and that did not fix the problem, then I tried disconnecting both terminals, pressing on the brake pedal and horn button, touching the terminals for 10 secs, reconnected the terminals and viola it works like magic, could not believe such an easy fix, saved $148 to the dealer. Thank You very much.
I'm so happy this video has helped so many people like yourself! It doesn't make sense to me that just disconnecting the negative battery terminal doesn't work, but you really have to do the other steps. Maybe some master mechanic will see this video and explain why it works this way!
Thanks for your informative video, I was able to get the message cleared off with your first step (removing "negative" battery terminal for about 10 seconds).
Thank you for this video! I had the same exact situation happen. I also had to disconnect both positive and negative and touch together before my radio would but it’s working now! Saved me a ton of money I’m sure!!!
I know this video is old.. I got a 2014 Outback and the dang on aux and bt stop working.. And knowing subby dealer are a bunch of greedy peeps!! Bless you!!!! 👍🏽🙏🏾👍🏽🙏🏾

This also worked on my 2018 wrx after i changed my battery. my infotainment system stayed in a loading screen but once i tried this it worked... THANKS @pinetop.jackson !
This happened to me just now, driving home in my 2019 Forester, only 8,800 miles! I love the vehicle's ride and handling but the electronics are total shit! The voice commands recognition is spotty, more miss than hit. The rear gate opening switch from inside doesn't work. And now this radio problem. You can go to AM, FM, XM, etc. and see the stations, there's just no volume and it also won't turn on voice commands or work with the BT paired cell phone! Going to the dealer this weekend, they are not gonna be happy to see me, trust me.
Unfortunately didn't work for me and my 2014 Crosstrek. I have an error message saying to insert sd card and program. I have no sd card. Just bought it "new" used. Any help much appreciated.
Disconnect battery run wire between positive and negative not touching posts turn every thing on of cause they want work you are just letting the stored current run in a circle from the computer. Lights Hazards high beam ac heater wait 20 mins then turn every thing off and remove wire. Connect battery. Turn on your radio and Haye Presto it works. This is safer than touching positive with negative. This works on most cars and trucks that have computers to operate them. You need to reprogram windows to. Up hold for 5 seconds. Down and hold for 5 seconds it should go all the way down and up, with a touch of the button and touch again to stop half way or a few inches from he top. Now program the rest.
When you showed yourself speaking, you said to step on the gas, but later on when you showed your foot stepping on a pedal, you said brake. So I'm unclear as to which you mean. (The Please Check Audio System message just came on yesterday after a jump start. Am hoping the first step - just disconnecting the negative terminal will do the trick... Haven't tried anything yet.)
I just got a 2015 forester limited and it happen the second day . I turned the car off and back on it was good , has urs messed up since this great hack?
I think just disconnecting the battery should hav fix it.. don’t see the point of connection of both terminal for 10 sec would help due to no power coming from both terminals
I know, it doesn't make sense! But just disconnecting the battery did not fix it. And then the connection of the two terminals did! I posted a link to this video on a Subaru forum, and someone else replied and said it worked for him too, his car needed the 10 sec connection. I don't know how or why it works...it'd be cool if someone could explain it to me!
I'm quite surprised he didn't even think to check if the fuse was blown, and more surprised that this actually worked. Typically, all factory raidos are garbage. That is why they are called radios - cheap crappy sound. Even with all the technology built in, they are total garbage. Car companies either overengineer it to their standards but still use the cheapest materials possible. Get an aftermarket system put in, or if you want to save some dough, do it yourself! With all the youtube vids out there, it should be a piece of cake.
Yeah, I don't understand why just disconnecting the battery didn't work. But touching the cables together did, and it seems to work for a lot of other people too, judging from the comments I get!
abel, did you already bring it to the dealer? did you try removing the 3 fuses of audio/nav? there is one in passenger fuse compartment fuse 24, fuse 5 at the engine compartment and another fuse at the driver side compartment
