Going through college has made me appreciate the fact that learning done under my own initiative is more fulfilling.
When reading Julia Lovells 'The Opium War', I honestly found it unbelievable how many times the Emperor and his court were: 1) Entirely lied to about how the war situation was going by generals and officials scared to be killed if they told the truth (fun fact: during that first capture of Canton, Qishan was basically the first person to say that the British had won any battles, probably a large part of why he was put to death); and 2) entirely unaware of geopolitics and smugly assured of Imperial supremacy, like during a late stage of the war the Daoguang Emperor had to demand maps and an explanation of who the hell these 'British' were.
Qing dynasty at that time was so ignorant to the point that they were pretty much in denial. lmao Any Civilisation out of China at that time was considered barbarian, simply because of their blind faith in Mandate of Heaven.
I know you just remade the video, but I would have talked about the discontent with the Qing and the Qing's defeat helped fuel the Taiping rebellion. The Taiping rebellion was an enormous conflict where more potentially more Chinese died than World War One, and it's often forgotten in the West. It was briefly mentioned as instability at 12:40 but it jumped to the West demanding more, and I believe it deserves a mention.
Would have been nice to mention that Zexu got all the blame for loss of the territories in the beginning and was exiled. He was eventually given a governorship, but his career never truly recovered.

Don't get too caught up on the attitude that the only legitimate information that exists in the world is one that has a famous name attached you'll miss out on many nuanced perspectives of life.
