I agree. I like vintage but I'm not specific to one era. Sometimes it's gets a lil costumey when it's only authentic

Hair and makeup go a LONG way, so I focus on those a lot. Also, things like high-waisted bottoms vs. low rise, blouses vs. tees help make even modern clothes look very vintage!

I dress vintage-styled everyday but honestly I have no real vintage or even real reproduction clothing! I just choose modern clothing that seems vintage when worn with curled hair and red lips. the more classic and simple your clothes are, the easier I find it to make them look how you want them to look.

+Barry Keller Good point. It means less rotation of your wardrobe each season too. More classic pieces work with more accessories.

I loved this video! I wear high-waisted Levis all the time and so I tuck everything in, which I find makes almost anything from a T shirt to a plaid flannel shirt look more vintage. And I always cuff my jeans--it's such a subtle but cute vintage touch, and very flattering if you do it so the slenderest part of your ankle is exposed. I love a slightly rockabilly look, so I tend to tie a red bandana onto one of my belt loops or put it in my back pocket. Most of the time I favor 100% cotton T shirts and crop tops, which have a more vintage vibe than stretchy synthetic material. I also make red lipstick more wearable by wearing soft, smudged brown eyeliner--provides definition but doesn't compete with the red lipstick. And I use a light-hold hairspray on vintage curl sets because it keeps the look relaxed and touchable. I do heated sets because a slightly more relaxed, loose curl, Lauren Bacall-style, looks better on me. I also always have my nails almond-shaped and painted red or pink--it's such a flattering look and makes the fingers look so long and elegant.

+Amber Nelson oh I love the scarf in the belt-loop or pocket idea! I’ve never done that but it sounds super cute! So true about 100% cotton tops. It’s the small details combined.

Hi! thank you! I get some from Brandy Melville, but they very stupidly do not stock a full size run, so if you are upwards of a size 4, it's not a good option. I get my other tees from mens' clothing stores, my favorites are from Iron and Resin (most of them are 100% cotton and they have plain pocket tees and also graphic tees) and Deus Ex Machina. I just cuff the sleeves and tuck them in to make them more feminine.

Yesssss I’ve been so excited for this video! I’ve been struggling with this, im disabled and I tried growing my hair a little and bought rollers etc to try doing curls....I was in too much pain and so I felt defeated. But hearing everyone in the community does their own thing anyway makes me feel better! I’m researching Short vintage styles that were popular too so I’m thinking Audrey Hepburn or Jean seburn hair I’ll feel cuter that way. I love your videos I’ve learned so much from you. Can you do a video about how to store and care for vintage clothes, I bought a 1940s nurse cape and I’ve no idea how to care for it xx

+Miss Adventure you’ll find hair styles and ways of dressing that are simpler and become routine. I love how long hair looks when it’s all styled but every time I grow it I just don’t have the time or energy to do it everyday. Hence, I keep going back to a Marilyn cut. Some other great short styles were sported by the likes of Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. Many actresses went very short in the early 1950s. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect do and rock it! X

I'd like to learn more about vintage garments to form a silhouette. I love to wear vintage hats. My passion! That helps to totally take a modern outfit with a vintage cut to a new level! It transforms the outfit. Always enjoy your upbeat videos. Hasta luego.

Great video topic! I wear red lipstick most days. My eye glasses look vintage. I love wearing vintage hair accessories and jewelry especially necklaces and brooches. Little sweaters also make my outfits more vintage looking.

I love this video, and great bits of advice 😃 I've had Betty bangs for over a year now and I find any hairstyle instantly looks vintage with very little effort. And any modern skirts I own, I take in the waist at the back by adding darts and wear them then as a high waist and tuck all tops into them and add a belt and voila 😉

I don't think Structural Undergarments are AS necessary when doing pre-50s. a lot of my 40s shoulders are pre padded and rations made things like metal wires for bras more scarce. That might be why I've gravitated more towards that though XD

I tend towards a 1930s look most days and if I leave out a hat and gloves, it just looks ladylike, rather than specifically a vintage look. I live in an Art Deco city so I can go out in the complete ensemble and as most of my garments are hand-knitted, I get stopped in the street most times. I always wear stockings as I'm too pale to go without hosiery and I think pantyhose are just awful. In our last Summer, the chain clothing and shoe stores had a lot of items that were rather 30s inspired,

Love your attitude about this :) I have a pretty flexible dress code at work but find that my customers can find full vintage off putting.
I lean heavily on accessories... neck scarves, turban headscarves, earrings and FLATS. Lots of high waisted... I always choose outerwear with a more tailored or vintage inspired cut. And cardigans can make your jeans and tee instant retro.

    • @MissBeeTownsend
      @MissBeeTownsend  6 років тому

+MsAngieNightmare I love a more tailored look. It’s one my favourite things about vintage clothes - they FIT! Yeah, I agree, high waisted all the way. I feel it’s the minimum standard for retro dressing haha! No more hipster jeans!

I like to play with different eras I have noticed that too long bell skirts make me feel like school girl but tight dresses with vintage cut are too put together for my taste. I want something in the middle. Usually I dress pretty casually, but I wear pants not jeans. I complete my look with vintage hair and nice heels 💃 and good make up of course

As much as I love looking authentic, I find I mix eras a lot too. My favorite fashion era is the late 60's, but most of the time my makeup is more early-mid 60's because it's just more flattering on my face. And a lot of times I don't have time to do my hair in the big Jean Shrimpton style I like, so it'll end up looking more late 70's or early 80's (which I also have a soft spot for) because of my natural hair texture.

This was very helpful! I’ve loved and appreciated retro style for a long time, but I also love contemporary menswear, denim, and thrifted wool pieces (overalls, coats, etc.). I want to blend the styles not out of necessity, but out of a desire to enjoy my tastes simultaneously. I imagine that wearing some nice loafers with some of my existing jeans/trousers, a nice button-down (maybe w a sweater and brooch overtop), either vintage hair or a hair scarf, and a nice red lip will give the illusion of vintage/retro when it’s really just shoes, makeup, and hair! Thank you!

Also working on nailing true 40s/50s waves. My natural hair is very curly and voluminous because I’m biracial, and wet set pincurls have had success, but sponge rollers and a brush-out left me with a Mufasa mane even bigger than what I already have. I’m going to try again will true setting cream and bigger rollers, so we’ll see!

The non-fashionistas of the various eras would have mixed and matched anyway. They'd have thought "I like my hair this way" or "This sweater is comfy." Etc. Or they couldn't afford to toss something out because it wasn't super current. So, everyone do your own interpretation and have fun.

I'm very picky about color and fabric patterns so the best solution for me is sewing vintage patterns! I like the idea of wearing a true vintage piece, but finding perfect items in antique stores or etsy is difficult. 😂😂

@@MissBeeTownsend Lucky for me, I'm drawn to plain/simple 60's and 70's fashion (bishop sleeves are my jam!) and a good number of the patterns are labled easy and have better instructions than earlier decades. It's actually fairly simple to do :D
