I use cages to protect my camera, to add an hdmi clamp, and to put my videomic pro. I have dropped my cameras a couple of times, and the only thing that protected it was the cage. I had no luck for my gimbal, as one of the motors got destroyed. I do wedding and a lot of sweet sixteen, and is unpredictable when someone will kick your tripod, and there goes your $7,000.00 investment. So I say for me it is an insurance for my camera, it has worked well for me. Great video!
This is neat. I have cages for all my stuff and each camera is set up a bit different for each use case. But this could be useful for people that haven't built up secondary gear for their other bodies.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but this is perfect timing. I’ve been wanting to rig up my S1H but the cage has been discontinued and taken off sale everywhere This could be a solid option, and I have other cameras so it might even be better
@@cedartreefilms Slightly clipping the corner of a door frame at a slow shuffling ninja-walk pace. ; ) In all seriousness, my rigs that have 15mm rods are all as protected as possible, as I'm genuinely concerned about a bunch of cables and antennas jutting out at all non-ergonomic angles, depending on what I need rigged up that day. Such fragility is a serious design flaw that the camera companies are perfectly happy with leaving intact, which is kinda lazy imho. I'm definitely glad that decent cages have cable clamps along with low-profile connectors available on their same-branded cables (SmallRig mainly). We need some deeper thinking on this type of situation. I'd like my rigs to be "Sam Hargrave"-rated if at all possible!
@@cedartreefilms I think it might end up being goofy-heavy... but I wonder if you could set up your cam and mon cages with short extensions that go into clamped / reinforced jacks. Then you link the different cameras with cheap and repairable / expendable power & hdmi cable jumpers, to take the wear and tear of all this hot swapping. That would be a good product idea... a splitable cheeseplate made to clamp cords into one nice and neat edge connector. You could have SmallRig and Kondor Blue versions.
lol yes the ninja walk of camera death. Fortunately haven’t had any hdmi damage even on the bmpcc og so maybe have just gotten lucky That’s a good point, some kind of hdmi clamps on an l bracket could work decently. Tbh even just extending the backplate past the hdmi so it would block any impacts would be an improvement. Hmm time to cad some stuff
yeah, once you know what cameras you use most often, then it all makes sense. I always find the external monitor and the lens are the ones which require a counter balance. in my rig I re-used three sides of some arri or fs-7 cage, but i went with a C-shape over the right side, so i can still see the camera monitor and can use the DSLR grip as an option. But I still find it too big. on my next iteration i will start with a flat steel bar and bend it in the places where I need the bends and will drill the mounting holes where they need to be. smallrig is still the choice for the accessories, especially nato bars and predrilled rods and holders.
Hi, do you know of any source where the v-mount adapter plate with 1/4 20 holes, shown at 02:35, can be bought separately? I've made a very similiar rig to the one you've shown in the video, but for some reason my folding base plate came from Smallrig with a v-mount adapter without the 1/4 20 holes. Smallrig customer support was not very helpful even though their own promotional materials on the website show this type of adapter as part of the package. I improvised another way to mount my NP-F plate but it's kinda janky. Still hoping I can find the correct adapter somewhere 🥲
yeah ofc! this v mount adapter is the same one that they sell with the folding v mount plate. I was thinking about getting a spare too bc the femal part of it would be useful to have for other mounting options. amzn.to/4eAv4Ra
Thanks for the video.Just curious if there is something that works for us shooters who use Manfrotto tripod heads (and quick release plates) instead of Arca Swiss compatible ones?
I haven’t seen one. Do you want to use exclusively manfrotto? Because you could keep the arcs Swiss on the camera and put a manfrotto on the base plate. Though it would be a bit less convenient There are companies that make plates that work with arca Swiss and manfrotto. I got one from pro media that does both
Thank Cedartree Films for this video. One question, please. I see that you don't have a microphone attached to your setup. So, it does not work for me.
Nice yeah will still work with a cage. I have a few cages left over from before I started using this that it works with. I’m using the small rig multi tool, pretty useful and only 20 bucks
same here. I ride the s5ii naked with the 7" Video Assist in the hot shoe but the Video asset is heavy puts the weight forward. I also have the BM cam and this smallrig plate so this may solve my weight issue going in back of camera. I like the s5ii naked for photography and cages snag on my smaller bags.
This may work for small and light cameras, but it’s a terrible idea for anything heavy. Even something like an FX3 with a decent lens would impart significant torque on the entire rig. Not to mention that without a cable lock, you’re just asking to snag a cable and disconnect at best or break a port at worst.
Oh yeah for sure is only for light primes. I add 15mm rods and a lens support to the bottom for any heavier lenses. Still doesn’t need a cage for that which is nice For cable lock I haven’t had any issues but is definitely a risk
@@cedartreefilms This is a fantastic solution as a lightweight run and gun setup, nicely done. I think where someone might run into problems is if they slap a heavy telephoto or heavy cine lens on the camera. Having rails, lens support and a cage that has 2 to 3 point of contact will keep everything from flexing and twisting. I totally agree with you though and I much prefer the concept of something that will be future proof and work for any camera body. As far as universal cages go,, I wish we were there but they are often too large and clunky and take away from the natural ergonomics that the camera offers. That is one benefit to camera specific cages, is that they fit like a glove and can often add to the overall handling of the camera, like by offering more surface area for gripping the camera and of course offering many options for mounting accessories anywhere around the camera body. Again, good job! I love seeing solutions like this being put out there. For some people this can be a huge benefit.

Awesome! Nice shortened remix of my npf dummy plate! Glad someone else is getting use out of it. :D
Hell yeah was a great idea and design. Appreciate it!
Cages add sturdiness and structure to the body camera, because when you add pieces is the camera body who is supporting all that and it can break.

idk if you outgrow a cage, you kinda just get more cameras 😅 but cool little setup, I love checking out different rigs!
haha very true. More cameras then more odds and ends for those cameras
Dang, I just bought a half cage from Smallrig for my Sony A7iv. It was good price tho.
🥳thanx

Not really since all the weight is on the l plate
Not unless he holds it by the camera.

Yeaaah no. The amount of strain that is gonna be on the base plate is mad
The npf plate battery and monitor weighs less than some v mount batteries so it’s well within spec small rig designed it for
@cedartreefilms ohhh okay. I'm used to the huge gigatonne v mount battery
maybe for lighter rigs.... not sure I could do that with anything more.
Yeah depends on the strength of the hinge for the base plate. Seems alright to add more weight to me
