Emily: Testing every white highlight inks so you don't have to. Me who only paints with tempera (and acrylic paints) while using water to create a white surface on my canvases: ... Yeah I might learn something.
First off, this Sailor Moon piece is really cute! For Inktober this year, I decided to try the Sigma pens since I’d been using the Gelly Rolls all year with no problem, and I’d heard many people recommend them. And I... literally can’t use in my sketchbook. I had already used it to sign two pictures and make stars in one picture before I noticed the issue in the pictures and my swatch in the back. Idk why, but the ink wipes off onto the opposite page in my sketchbook. I’ve had to put tissue paper (it was right after my birthday so I had some right by me) to prevent the ink from smearing and coming off. Now, it works great in my bullet journal. So, now I’m just using my Gelly Rolls pens in size 10 and only size 10. To me, size 10 seems just as juicy as the Sigma pen. I’ve only recently tried the gouache, so idk what to think of it yet.
I use those Signo pens a lot too, and they're actually REALLY easy to find here in Norway. They sell them at pretty much all chain bookstores, I think, and even the tiny office supply store in my tiny hometown stock them.
Thank you so for these videos omg you have no idea! This saves me from having to do my own testing or reading the maybe not true amazon reviews ! I love it when artist make these kinds of videos.
I dont know if that seemingly extra long pause after saying "bleed proof white" was purposeful, but riding off of the political climate comment I was laughing in distress
Dr. Martin's makes a pen white (for dip pen and brushes) that comic inkers swear by because it covers black india ink to provide highlights and create textures. Also would like to see a test of these whites on the vanta black you reviewed.
I use DR. Martin's pen white (I think I picked it up because it was slightly cheaper) & the Winsor & Newton white guache on my animal watercolors. I find that both will dry a bit darker at first coat, but that works for me since as I put more on (I'm using them for feather/fur details) it adds depth to my rendering. I would note though, that if you want a really bright area, put the ink down first, then the gauche over it - that works really well; the gauche does start to get a shine on it if you apply too many layers.
So Copics used the nasty nail polish detail color jars you get with cheap brands for their product....really copics your doing us dirty like that..that shit gunks up on nail polish you thought ink would be different.
I love your videos! :D As for suggestions, my go-to are usually the Molotow ONE4ALL Marker (with the plastic nib, the other two kind of nibs are terrible, esp the thin one always gets clogged in its metallic part) and the Talens white ecoline.
i started off using paint markers/paint pens with heavy fumes for highlighting. they'd spill and leak everywhere and i'm so glad i finally trashed them for some jelly roll pens
I just use a white posca pen, it’s not the most opaque especially on top of reds and dark blues, but it’s still a very nice highlight and I would recommend it, I haven’t tried it on top of like colored pencils go but I’d assume it would work since it’s just white paint in a pen, I use it for on top of my copics and it works fine along with on top of watercolor & other acrylic paints. :)
I was a little distracted when they kept going from blue, to purple to clear, not gonna lie. It obviously was filmed over multiple days. Or she has even MORE magic powers
doughnutt-exe Clips were filmed over the course of 3 weeks. I paint my nails every week so they look nice and neat in each video! (Although they were chipped in some clips here)
Be *VERY* careful with the Signo gel pens. If you are unfortunate enough to accidentally get the 'Angelic', thinking it's the same thing, that will absolutely ruin your expectations.
Totally agree with her that Signo is the best pen for highlights. I started out with the Gelly roll because I heard good reviews on UA-cam, but was sorely disappointed with its output and performance. The signo releases much more pigment, much more smoothly.
i use the signo white gel pen pretty regularly and i want to note that when i use it over alcohol marker it will absorb the pigment and fade over time. i wouldnt use it for alcohol marker pieces
In case anyone wants any more ideas, I use the speedball white acrylic ink on my watercolors. It does soak in very little but depending on how much you have on your brush it works extremely well.
I think I've used most of these... I mean the bad ones.. Plus countless white gel pens which work, but can flake off over time. Which lead me on a search to find a SUPER opaque white highlighting fluid. Thus i have found my tried and true brush and pencil titanium white powder/touch up texture mixture. I will cry if ever they are discontinued. They are amazing! Then again i am a CP artist so not sure about other mediums.. Though i cant imagine it not working
The white gel pen (can be seen at 14:51) smudges with graphite so you gotta use it, scribble on the side with it, then use it again. I only use this because I can't find anything else in my local art supply stores
Wow, every time I watch your video I am mostly looking forward to hearing what you have to say, but always end up getting so much inspiration from your painting
I'm very fortunate that I have a Blick art supply store near by, and I usually get a couple signos from there. And I think I saw some at Michael's but it's definitely a crap shoot when I go out for a restock.
Moltow one4all 1mm paint markers are my go-to. The white paint is more opaque than posca, and they leak less (at least for me. They're pricey, but just the one will last years.

Note to self: Never get white inks.
Dr. Martin's makes a pen white (for dip pen and brushes) that comic inkers swear by because it covers black india ink to provide highlights and create textures. Also would like to see a test of these whites on the vanta black you reviewed.
i got so excited when i saw she was painting sailor moon because i am a huge anime nerd.
Emily: "There's the sakura jelly roll"
Me: Hey its me
that COPPA disclaimer
Scary as fuck, baby! Gotta take them precautions !
Emily Artful just wish people who didn't upload videos would take it more seriously.
I've been working on black paper lately and this is amazing, thank you!!!!!
So Copics used the nasty nail polish detail color jars you get with cheap brands for their product....really copics your doing us dirty like that..that shit gunks up on nail polish you thought ink would be different.
At first I thought it said “tasted” and I got worried
Same here lol!
Usagi!!! My girl! My boo! My bae!! I LOVE this painting dammit!
Much love Ems! You’re my new favorite UA-cam human, pretty lady!
yay, the PH martins is the one I already use! I've the old style Copic white too but yeah
I switch between a white posca if I need a large area filled in, and a gelly roll if I need a small area
I love your videos! :D As for suggestions, my go-to are usually the Molotow ONE4ALL Marker (with the plastic nib, the other two kind of nibs are terrible, esp the thin one always gets clogged in its metallic part) and the Talens white ecoline.
Hold up I was first
I know no one cares I'm just incredibly proud of my clicking skills
no omre 👏 UwU
Im proud of you
You're the clicking queen
Are you sure you're over 13
@@fkhan2006 I turned thirteen today
*the shadow makes the brow looks like they're floating lmao*
Lmaoo
i started off using paint markers/paint pens with heavy fumes for highlighting. they'd spill and leak everywhere and i'm so glad i finally trashed them for some jelly roll pens
I know this is off topic but your nails look so cute~
I was a little distracted when they kept going from blue, to purple to clear, not gonna lie. It obviously was filmed over multiple days. Or she has even MORE magic powers
doughnutt-exe Clips were filmed over the course of 3 weeks. I paint my nails every week so they look nice and neat in each video! (Although they were chipped in some clips here)
Thank you!! I try to keep them nice since most of you only see my hands 😂
Emily Artful Thats so sweet of you to do~ I hope you and da babes are doing well!
Be *VERY* careful with the Signo gel pens.
If you are unfortunate enough to accidentally get the 'Angelic', thinking it's the same thing, that will absolutely ruin your expectations.
I enjoy your videos so much!! Your commentary makes me smile and crack up and you remind me of me 20 years ago... so thanx for that!
Btw, you should add a star or a heart or something to the highlighters YOU would use in the description!
Wow, I did not expect the disclaimer at the start
White Posca markers are also great for highlights! Very opaque and is a paint pen.
The raspberries and smiling babies are the best! 🤣💖
The white gel pen (can be seen at 14:51) smudges with graphite so you gotta use it, scribble on the side with it, then use it again. I only use this because I can't find anything else in my local art supply stores

Travel art kit 'tour'?
Wow, every time I watch your video I am mostly looking forward to hearing what you have to say, but always end up getting so much inspiration from your painting
I give Da Babes 10/10 clapping babies! He's so cute! ❤
I'm very fortunate that I have a Blick art supply store near by, and I usually get a couple signos from there. And I think I saw some at Michael's but it's definitely a crap shoot when I go out for a restock.
omg a SORROW TV REFERENCE
emily i LOVE YOU
Great video!!! I love your sense of humor! ((Also I loved the Sorrow TV reference!))
thank you for this excellent comparison video, it was super helpful!
For the signo white pens you can usually buy them at rymans art and office supplies
Moltow one4all 1mm paint markers are my go-to. The white paint is more opaque than posca, and they leak less (at least for me. They're pricey, but just the one will last years.
