- Today's episode of kitaabwala is about the book 'The Eseentials of Hinduism' which tells us about the ancient texts of Hindu culture like vedas, upanishads, etc in brief form. This book is written by Prof. Trilochan Shastry.
He is a Prof. of IIM Bangalore and Founder Secretary and CEO of Centre for Collective Development (CCD) which promotes cooperatives in dry land areas for small and marginal farmers since 2004. He is also founder of Farmveda, a value added social venture giving all profits to farmers.
Apart from this he is the Chairman and founder of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) that does Citizen Election Watches all over the country since December 2002 with over 1200 NGOs, has won several public interest litigations (PIL) in the Supreme Court, and important RTI appeals on Political Parties. ADR has been conferred 4 National Awards from CNN-IBN, NDTV, TOI, President of India.

धर्म सभी का होता है। तेरा मेरा नहीं।
धर्म से उच्च कुछ भी नहीं होता है।
देश - संस्कृति - विधान सब धर्म पर ही आश्रित हैं।
मानवता का मूल स्रोत ही धर्म है।
ज्ञानविज्ञान का मूल स्रोत ही धर्म है।
अमर बोध का मूल स्रोत ही धर्म है। अमरबोध से मनुष्य को अमरता प्राप्त होती है यानि मोक्ष मिलता है। धर्म पर शङ्का कभी नहीं करनी चाहिये क्योंकि धर्म सदा ही सही और सत्य मार्ग वताता है। धर्म की ही आज्ञा माननी चाहिये। कितना भी योग्य आदमी हो, यदि वो आदमी धर्म का विरोध करे तो यह समझो कि वह आदमी अन्य लोगों को विनाश की ओर ले जा रहा है और स्वयं भी विनाश की ओर जा रहा है।

सौरभ जी मैं आप का प्रशंससंक हूँ, 'साँसों की माला' मीरा का नहीं तुफैल होशयरपुरी जी का लिखा हुआ है। वो ४७ में पाकिस्तान चले गये थे। 'साँसों की माला तोरे नाम भी उन्हों ने ही लिखा है। इस को भी नुसरत जी ने बहुत उमदा गाया है। वैसे आप दोनो की बातचीत का स्तर बहुत ऊँचा है।
आचार्य प्रशांत की इस विषय में सैंकड़ों विडियो हैं, अगर उनको भी बुलाया जाए इस विषय में चर्चा करने पर, तो ये चर्चा बहुत प्रकाशमय होगी।

I bought the book for my academia purpose but find it so simple and lucid that till now i have gifted it to more than 5,6 people around me.

ॐ Core Philosophy of Hinduism (the way of life) or better understood as Sanatan Dharma (the eternal).
1. Brahman ~ The Supreme Existence or absolute reality. There are no millions gods and goddesses but only many manifestations the same supreme Brahman (cosmic energy and consciousness).
2. Dharma ~ that which accomplices the three tasks of keeping the set up of the society in excellent condition, bringing about the worldly progress of every living being, and facilitating their progress in the spiritual realm as well (attaining Moksha/Nirvana).
3. Samsara ~ The Continuous cycle of life, death, and reincarnation (like Big Bang and Big Crunch and at the cusp of transcending).
4. Karma ~ The Universal Law of Cause and Effect that one's actions and thoughts directly determine their current and future lives similar to Newton's Third Law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction (Action and Acceptance).
5. Purushartha ~ Inherent Values of the Universe (object of the human pursuit) - Artha (Economic Value). Kama (Pleasures). Dharma (righteousness). Moksha (liberation).
6. Atman (the belief in soul) ~ all living creatures have a soul and they all are part of the supreme soul (Brahman).
The Mahavakyas from Upanishads ~ The Great Sayings
1. Tat Tvam Asi (That You Are) ~ the very nature of all existence as permeated by the finest essence.
2. Ahm Brahmasmi ~ I am Brahman (divine)
3. Prajnanam Brahma ~ Brahman is Prajnana (the highest and purest form of wisdom, intelligence, and understanding).
4. Ayam Atma Brahma ~ This Self (Atman) is Brahman (divine).
The Brahman (the cosmic energy that neither can be created nor be destroyed but only transcends through various karmic cycles) is Adi Anadi (ever existing) even in the nothingness and that's why Hindus practice Namaste as a form of greeting knowing and understanding that there is Brahman within the other living being as well.
Six Schools [principal darshans] of Hindu Philosophy
1. Vaisheshika (Kanada) ~ Science of Logic and futility of Maya - The Vaisheshika school attempts to identify, inventory, and classify the entities and their relations that present themselves to human perceptions. It lists six categories of being (padarthas), to which was later added a seventh. These are (I) Dravya, or substance, the substratum that exists independently of all other categories, and the material cause of all compound things produced from it. Dravyas are nine in number: earth, water, fire, air, ether, time, space, spirit, and mind.
(ii) Guna, or quality, which in turn is subdivided into 24 species.
(iii) Karma, or action. Both guna and karma inhere within dravya and cannot exist independently of it.
(iv) Samanya, or genus, which denotes characteristic similarities that allow two or more objects to be classed together.
(v) Vishesha, or specific difference, which singles out an individual of that class.
(vi) Samavaya, or inherence, which indicates things inseparably connected. (vii) To these six was later added abhava, nonexistence or absence.
2. Nyaya (Gautama) ~ Logical quest for god and phases of creation - Its ultimate concern is to bring an end to human suffering, which results from ignorance of reality. Liberation is brought about through the right knowledge. Nyaya is thus concerned with the means of right knowledge.
3. Yoga (Patanjali) ~ Practice meditation and Samadhi for Reunification - Yoga holds with Samkhya that the achievement of spiritual liberation (moksha) occurs when the spirit (purusha) is freed from the bondage of matter (prakriti) that has resulted from ignorance and illusion.
4. Sankhya (Kapil) ~ Eliminate physical and mental pains and receive liberation - the consistent dualism of matter (prakriti) and the eternal spirit (purusha). The two are originally separate, but in the course of evolution purusha mistakenly identifies itself with aspects of prakriti. Right knowledge consists of the ability of purusha to distinguish itself from prakriti.
5. Vedanta (Veda Vyas) ~ Explains the divine nature of the soul, Maya, and creation (Conclusion) - Vedanta is also referred to as Vedanta Mimamsa (“Reflection on Vedanta”), Uttara Mimamsa (“Reflection on the Latter Part of the Vedas”), and Brahma Mimamsa (“Reflection on Brahman”).
6. Mimansa (Jaimini) ~ Explains Vedas are eternal and divine (“Reflection” or “Critical Investigation”) - The aim of Mimamsa is to give rules for the interpretation of the Vedas, the earliest scriptures of Hinduism, and to provide a philosophical justification for the observance of Vedic ritual. Because Mimamsa is concerned with the earlier parts of the Vedas (called the Karmakanda), it is also referred to as Purva-Mimamsa (“Prior Study”) or Karma-Mimamsa (“Study of Actions”). Vedanta, which deals with the later portion of Vedic literature called the Upanishads, is called Uttara-Mimamsa (“Posterior Study”) or Jnana-Mimamsa (“Study of Knowledge”).

If you attend rituals, parayanas in good mathas like ramakrishna mission, sivananda ashram you will understand value of rituals. They purifies the soul and have value in raising collective consciousness.

Thank You Professor Shastri, highly intelligent and meaningful talk. I looked for the book immediately because it confirms for me my thoughts on the differences between Vedic philosophy and Hindu Religion. The Vedas and Upanishads are the oldest and greatest philosophical books. Hinduism as practiced, is very much a convenient ignorance of these learnings wherever politically convenient. I am not talking of now but probably ever since Manu, and more so when outside religions began proselytizing. It is unfortunate your book (print edition) is not available in the US, while Kindle version is. Thank you once again for being so articulate and clear in your explanation.

To get concept of Nirgun and Sargun. Take iron it has physical attributes dimension, size etc. Heat iron it is liquid has attributes, Heat molten iron it is gas, it has attributes, , heat freon gas, it has colour attributes, and is in form of light. Further energizing it merges to cosmic energy. This is Nirgun or no attribute state..... Focus to the point Nirgun state is subtle state which is not physically manifested to attributes.

वेद और उपनिषदे का अभ्यास और समझना, समजाना, बहुत कठीण है. विज्ञान-तंत्रज्ञान युग हे आदमी उसके काबिल हो चुका है. वेद उपनिषदे बहुतही आध्यात्मिक विचार धारा है. वेद उपनिषदे की संकल्पना मनुष्य जिवन की एक कठीण संस्कार प्रणाली है ऐसी मेरी भावना है. इसीलीय इस काल जिस तरह से प्रसार होना चाहिए वैसा नही हुआ. वेद और उपनिषदोमे कहीभी कहाभी हिंदू धर्म कां उल्लेख नही किया है. भारत वर्ष मे संशोधन और विकास की संकल्पना नहीं है .आज जर्मन, जपान, अमेरिका, युरोप, चिन, रशिया, जैसे खंड देश संशोधन और विकास की और बढ रहे है.भारत मे ऊस Technology की copy करने में ही भारतीय व्यस्त, और मस्त है. काश्मीर हे कन्या कुमारीतक अष्ट दिशा मे कितने प्रकार के विविध धर्मके, जनजाती के विविध भाषा के , आदिवासी लोग रहते है. कैसा यह देश सनातन होगा मुझे इसकी आशंका है. आज पुरे भारत में चारोतरफ भारतकी सिमापर इस्लाम धर्म के लोगो का राज है. आज यही लोग रोजाना जो लेन देन का व्यवहार करते है वह व्यवहार पुरा Cash मे करते है इस का संशोधन होना खुप जरूरत है. भारत सरकारका Tax बचाते है. इस बात पर भारतीय लोगोने विचार करना चाहिए. भूत कालमे क्या हुआ इस बातोमे बहस करने बजाय वर्तमान स्थिती कैसी है इस बात पर जोर देना चाहिए.

Each book that he reviews, Saurabh first reads the book himself thoroughly and at times he appears to be knowing certain things more than the authors themselves. Versatile journalist. Not that he knows everything but he expresses everything more easily and clearly. He has gift of the gab.

According to the Buddhism Mokshya means "Karma Klesha xaya mokshya" (When grasping to karma (Good or Bad) and emotional defilement are totally eradicated from mind stream) is Mokshya , In Vagwat Gita there is also written Mind is the reason for Bandan and mokshya . Most of eastern philosophy agrees that this body isn't me and mine because it is continuously changing but what about ability of knowing ? Here Hinduism , Jainism etc agrees that the quality of knowing is (Saat, chitt, ananda ) , but Buddhism refutes that knowing is a process and process means change , how can it knows if it doesn't change ? Anatma means there is not such saat ( unchanging in three times) and to cut the grasping of self (Aatman) it is used but it doesn't mean there is nothing at all.If there is self there is always subject object duality and this duality leads to me and mine and others , and due to it klesha ( Raag, dwesha, Moha ) and actions(Karma) (mental, verbal and physical) lead by klesha has imprints in mind stream and the life is the projection of these karma imprints.
Hindu Nyaya sutra has very much influence with Chandrakriti's (Buddhist master) "Pramanavarttika".
Buddhism is complicated one cannot understand it by studying books , in eastern philosophy there is a term Suddha siddha parampara (pure unbroken enlightened lineage ) .Interpretation is very essential in spirituality because , ordinary people like me interprets things according to the collected information throughout lifetime and these information are not always 100% correct and complete . Thus, our interpretation is always limited hence, we rely on only the unbroken enlightened lineage interpretation that has produced enlightened masters in every generation.

I recommend highly the listen to lectures and interview he has given during his stay on this earth. Also please review his three main books related to Bhagavad- gita as it is, Bhagat Purina and chaitnya charitamruta . Adviata philosophy is more or less based on impersonalism which is hard to understand. The dviita philosophy is more based on Supreme purusha. On other hand krishna addressed in Gita as perbhrama. A Supreme bhrama.
