Davis NVF Vertical Feed Treadle Sewing Machine - Loading a Long Bobbin & Sewing has Needle Feed

- Here's my 1917's DAVIS NVF VERTICAL FEED that I'll be using for the next 11 blocks of Kathryn Kerr's "365 Sampler Challenge". This is by far my favorite machine for quilt binding, or any multi-layer sewing, since it has a needle-feed walking foot!! No shifting of layers--no bottom feed-dogs!! The needle and upper feed-arm move the fabric, so layers can not possibly shift. Also, can back tack and uses standard 15x1 needles (unlike earlier VF models that need "dagger" extra-long needles). This isn't my prettiest machine, but I will never part with it due to the needle-feed walking foot. Here is a short video of her at work making the Feb. 24 block. After using it for 11 blocks, it is NOT my favorite piecing machine, but, again, it is my favorite for binding and sewing multiple layers.

I have the same machine. Thank you for showing yours. ❤️
Love it ♥️🧵Could you please do another bobbin winding video but without the music and real time instead of sped up ! Like to see how long it takes to wind ! Glenn
interesting, never saw one of those
I just acquired one like this! I'm having trouble getting the bobbin thread to pull up properly, do you have any tips? Mine doesn't have a manual and I can't find the exact model online
The two most common causes for this problem are either the needle is not set in the needle clamp correctly or it's not threaded right. Make sure the needle has the long grove facing left and it is threaded from left to right. Hope that helps! There is a Facebook group for Davis Vertical Feed machines and they have manuals in their Files section. facebook.com/search/top?q=davis%20verticla%20feed
@@FiddleyBits thank you so much!
@@FiddleyBits I got it! I had had to replace the needle, and it was a little shorter than the original so it wasn't dropping down far enough where I had it in the clamp. Lowered it a little and clamped it back down, and it works now!
Where do you get needles?
The NVF model uses standard 15x1 needles (same as most Singer machines) you can get anywhere. The earlier models use the really long needles (some call dagger needles) that you can get online size MTX190, 190(R),SY7555.
I don't care to piece with my Davis VFs, either, but for straight-ish line quilting, they can't be beat!
I call mine "Thumper".
YES...Thumper!!! The do have a thumping sound don't they. I agree completely with the straight-line quilting use for these machines!! NO SHIFTING WHILE QUILTING!! 🙂
