Note to record buyers: If you find Abbey Road in the 2 dollar bin with the sleeve incredibly fucked up, most likely it will be scratched to hell and skip over half of I Want You and a lot of the Abbey Road Medley.
Needledrop I completely respect what your doing with your channel..your analysis and critique mixed with harsh and honest criticism along with the ability to go in depth on your reviews and opinions is why I enjoy watching..thanks Fantano for always keeping real
I'm just beginning my record collection but I'm beyond stoked on this vintage copy of the White Album i scored a few years back that has a serial number.
I think the White Album is ironically called The Beatles because they didn't work as a group, kind of like a compilation of solo songs. However, Abbey Road is unmistakably their greatest attempt to work again as one, from vocal harmonies to the production of George Martin, etc.. imo
I'm so over the top happy that you are doing these videos, I've been watching you for so many years now and have always been curious about your collection :D AWESOME man. Thank you.
Awesome! This is a cool series. I just recently started a record collection a month or so ago, I've only got seven LPs at the moments but it's steadily growing and I've already got several of my favorite albums.
Something more to look forward to every week. Great video. I think it'll help me find some awesome music that I wouldn't have checked out otherwise. Thanks!
I'm 19 and well I am maybe not really collecting, but I have and buy vinyl records because I like the quality, the size of the record/art work/folder, the history behind the format and record if it is an old record, and to be at record stores and just search for records - but without searching for anything special. I like the element of surprise and just the idea of swimming in bigger sized records when it comes to music. I don't know it just makes me happier, whether it is an illusion or not.
Well the artwork for the covers and inserts are usually better because its a bigger canvas to work with. With original pressings, there's a certain satisfaction that you can only get by having the version of the recording that was available at the time. Lastly, with newer releases, most come with a voucher for a high quality digital download anyway.
Interested in the K's (for a possible King Crimson shout-out) and the P's (for an obligatory Pink Floyd shout-out) you rock, Anthony! As does your collection.
I heard An Albatross for the first time when they opened for Mike Watt at the Khyber in Philadelphia in May of 2003. Intense performance to say the least. They had just finished recording "Lazer Viking" when I met them. The guitarist told me that half the band was from Wilkes-Barre (close to where I reside in Hazleton, PA) and the other half was based in Philly. Their drummer stuck around for the next band's set because he was also playing with Jai Alai Savant!
Hey Anthony, have you ever heard about LPs that glow under blacklight? Not the ones they promote as such, but certain records at random, completely unadvertised. Not sure of the reason, but it is interesting. Most of the time the colors in the vinyl match the label.
There are a lot of reasons to buy vinyl. I personally like the larger copy of the artwork, and sometimes there are extras that are exclusive to vinyl releases. Plus...it's hard to explain, but there's just something about having a vinyl copy of an album that feels more...tangible. Of course that's just me, and I hope you get more responses so you don't just have to take my word for it.
Yes, CD's are quite collectible, especially now that they are being phased out. And, like you said, sometimes compact disc is the best option for a given album.
Only if you're really into the artwork of an album, which admittedly does draw me into some albums. The only draw back is (at least where I am) vinyls are like twice the price of CDs, so usually I only splurge on albums I already love like AnCo's Merriwether Post Pavilion, or Arcade Fire's The Suburbs or something classic like Hotel California, or Dark side of the moon.
Why not? It's his. Taking care of records is part of the appeal. I find it very rewarding and therapeutic. My records will be owned by someone else in the future (I hope) and I take care of them as best I can. People can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept of record collecting as a multi-faceted hobby.
I had planned to go back to Berwick before I left London, but I didn't have time. In retrospect, maybe it's better that way, as otherwise I'd possibly be broke right now. So many good shops there.
You talking about Sister Ray? There's also Reckless Records next door which sells a lot of second hand stuff and you can sell stuff there as well. Along that road there's Phonica which sells a lot of ambient stuff, dubstep and twee music. And there's also Sounds of the Universe shop which sells dubstep and hip-hop. In Camden there's All Ages Records which sells punk and in Crouch End there's Flashback. But yeh Berwick Street is awesome, I love Sister Ray.
Fantano seems to me to be a different beast, un-edited. More of his personality shines through, i think. When it's all polished & cut up, the sentiment is clearly their, the musical jargon is on point; but there is a certain personal rhythm that shies away. I believe that most of what makes him a great critic hides in these moments in between. At any rate, IzZ JuS Mii OPyNyoN. God Speed, Ant.
Hey Anthony I know this is entirely off-topic but are you ever going to do a "Best Albums of the 90's" or "00's?" I'm really interested what your thoughts on bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, Pavement, etc.
Somewhere in these almost 900 comments someone may have already said this, but we should see about getting you some archival inner sleeves ala QRP or MoFi. Thanks for sharing this video.
i know the bad brains quote you speak of. It was on the clear plastic you take off when you buy a new record. The quote was, "the greatest hardcore album of all time"
I'm sorry, I'm fairly new to your channel, so i'm not sure if you may have answered this question before. Would you say there is a distinct change in sound of vinyl, CD and digital music?
Just off of Portobello? Damn, I was on Portobello! There's another vinyl store there (called Intoxica) where I found the Vashti Bunyan record. The best street that I found in London for vinyl was Berwick Street, close to Oxford Circus. Three record shops there. If I'd not been sightseeing at that moment, I'd've gotten about four or five different LPs. They had a good copy of Fred Neil's s/t album, plus an excellent (though expensive) copy of GY!BE's Lift Yr. Skinny Fists.
This dude has gotta be the internet's busiest music nerd. He should start reviewing all these records

Yes, seriously. The uncompressed sonic quality of vinyl is far superior.
