    You might have zeroed it out to the iron, making it less sensitive to it. If you turned it off & back on while near the metal, then you zeroed it out. Also, I'm not an expert, but why would you want extreme sensitivity on a pin pointer? Wouldn't that cause you to think you were on top of the target when you're still several inches away & then possibly damage the target when digging? Pin pointing to me means you're pointing right at it & its about an inch from the tip of the pointer. Why would you want to sense something several inches out to the side of the pointer's shaft? That would confuse & frustrate me to death.

    • @tlarson36
      @tlarson36 2 роки тому +11

      That's exactly what I was thinking. A inch or two would be just fine.

      The Garrett Carrot we run at max sensitivity always. If you happen to pop it down a hole to get a signal everywhere (too sensitive) simply press & release the button & it detunes the probe, you can adjust up or down in this way by pressing near or further away from the target, extremely effective & in my opinion one of the very best probes on the market.

    I think you were a bit hard on the GP Pointer. Sure it doesn't vibrate or beep as loud and fast, but is that really necessary in a pointer. Does it do its job. You should do a review in the field. Also, even though it does not detect at the same distance as the more expensive units, is that really an issue when a pointer is meant to hone in on the digging area? I have ordered one to do my own testing. I just want to know if it gets the job done, because at a 5th the price of anything else it didn't seem to do such a bad job. Like your channel by the way. no offense intended.

I've used probes of all makes & models for 35+ yrs, the quantum leap forward was the Black Garrett Pro-pointer, it had such an impact on sales from maybe 1 in 100 using a probe to 1 in 100 who don't use a probe. It had its issues which is why Garrett brought out the Pro-pointer II and the Orange 'Carrot'. Not beeping as loud, not having the same range & not as good vibrate? That's like saying to a Formula 1 team (or NASCAR in USA), you'll be OK with these cheaper re-mould tyres & old stale low quality oils & fuel, they look almost the same & hey, so much cheaper. About 50% of these units have a factory flaw. The sensor in the tip is not all the way to end of the barrel. You can tell by shining a bright flashlight at the tip. If you see light through the tip, you have a bad one. Dont despair though, the fix is easy. Pop off the rubber cap on the switch, then slide a piece of thin stiff wire along side the switch down the barrel til it stops. Push a little harder, and the sensor will slide down and seat properly. Replace switch cover, and your done. I went from 1/3 inch tip detection to 1 1/2 inches instantly. There are a few vids here that show how it's done. ua-cam.com/video/K9ifmd0YvUg/v-deo.html

    You make Amazon worse for the rest of us, "I think I'll send this back and get my money". Why? It was as described. You got exactly what you knew you were going to get and expected when you purchased it. You are displaying buyers remorse and would be committing a form of Internet fraud of you did. You even made a video showing yourself doing it. The only reason you got that pinpointer was just so you can diss it and make a review that states the obvious. States exactly what everyone is expecting When comparing a $13 pin pointer and $120 pinpointer. A honest review would have stated but for the money it works pretty good. You are just shilling for Garrett and Garrett's "China" carrot and yes Garrett lies. Mostly made in China assembled and boxed in the good old US of A. By the way that box was made here as well so they were able to abuse the made in USA logo, but not the carrot it was assembled (screwed the battery cap on with the correct model number on the sticker) and placed in a box in the US state of Texas. Do I like my carrot? Sure I do and I've always had a Garrett pinpointer since they came out. Before that we would go by the Zen-tech version of the original Whites sold at harbor freight. Remember that one? We would change the button in it and add a vibrator. Then put it in a black nitrate glove also purchased at harbor freight and call it waterproof. But for somebody starting out grab the cheap GP. If you like the hobby, buy yourself a Garrett. You need to carry two pin pointers anyway many people don't realize that.

The sensing coil is probably not all the way at the tip/end of your bad one. Imo, that's probably why some people say their's suck. They likely have one with a coil that is not positioned all the way to the end. The newer GP2 (or is it GPII..?) supposedly doesn't have this problem.

      Let me guess, your detecting experience goes as far as looking for dollar coins dropped by kids in the playground...... If this is the case, sure stick to the cheap stuff but from a personal standpoint, i run a GPX 5000 out in the Western Australia goldfields and at times have a 25" Nugget Finder coil attached. Now i have dug holes 3 to 4 feet deep and with a coil that big it's near impossible to get it down in the whole to pinpoint without digging the hole super wide, this is where spending $200 on a good pin pointer can save you a lot of time, sweat and your back digging. Even for shallow targets, there's no messing about, a quick scrape, wave the wand and if it beeps you know your within 5 inches away essentially using the pin pointer as a metal detector itself. Those cheap pin pointers, you're basically only checking the dirt you have already dug and at that point, what's the point! 😁

    The Garrett can be “re-tuned” so if you are far away (6”) you at least know something is there. Then when you have a strong signal, you re-tune it so the strength is lower and you can fine tune you way to pin point the exact spot your target is at. If your detector’s maximum distance is only 1 inch, you will miss a lot of targets.

    I've always fancied detectoring, but have never gotten round to buying one. I mentioned it to my wife several years ago, but never mentioned it again. This year, my wife surprised me and bought me a Garret Ace 400i and it's a great piece of kit. The problem I find is that there is a lot of iron/metal in the fields and woods around where I live, from modern, to medieval, and more rarely Roman and Iron Age. So, I'm spoilt for metal. There's almost TOO MUCH metal. HOWEVER, the MD itself is sensitive even when 'dialled down' and filtering out 'trash' and I'm left with having to dig a hole maybe 1ft wide, even at shallow depth, wider if the object is buried deeper, so I thought a pin pointer would speed up locating the metal objects more precisely, either in the ground, or in the soil I'd removed. Absolutely, there's no way I'm paying over £100, let alone £200 for something which is only slightly more complicated than a hand held torch. Whilst looking at the available pin pointers, I came across your review of this very cheap pin pointer and reading the 'headline' assumed that you were going to sing its praises. It only took a moment or two to realise you were going to 'rip into' the product and call it 'rubbish' or 'awful' and flabbergasted that you were intending to send it back and ask for a refund. I'm a beginner, as I said, but as many more experienced detectorists have said here, THE WHOLE POINT of a pin pointer is that it 'zooms in' and 'pin points' the exact location of the object, in the ground, or in the removed soil. This GP pin pointer does exactly that, whilst your Garret pin pointers are beeping whilst 6 inches away, making them no better at pin pointing than the MD itself. Okay, so your cheap 'Chinese' knock-off' makes a different sounding beep. So what? So, the plastic is cheap. So what? Will they last forever? Probably not, but they'll be a piece of cake to repair with nothing more than some tape and maybe a bit of solder. If you ask me, you should be sending your Garrets back and getting a refund! BTW, I am no fan of cheap 'foreign knock offs' myself, and have even gone so far as to write to manufacturers and report copyright and trademark breaches, but when a respectable company sells a pin pointer for $100-$200 THAT'S the true 'rip off'

    • @Treasuremonk
      @Treasuremonk  2 роки тому

      Lots of people get a really cheap machine and get frustrated, really they all do the same when you’re £200 up cost, but the sound quality, the discrimination and Dept really show in say a Deus. In the end it’s what a person likes, can afford etc. thanks for the great comment!

    • @markedwardmann4274
      @markedwardmann4274 2 роки тому +1

      @@Treasuremonk Thanks for your speedy reply. Yes, my MD is cheap and the discrimination isn't brilliant, but it finds metal and puts me close enough to decide where to dig a hole. It's once I'm doing that that a pin pointer speeds everything up, and as I said, what I need is a pin pointer that only beeps/rings/wails/hoots/coughs or farts when it's within an inch or so of the object. If I scan the spoil with my MD and it beeps, I can then use the pin pointer to probe around and locate the object. If there's no beep I can maybe run the pin pointer around the edges or bottom of the hole to locate it more accurately.... but only if the thing only beeps within an inch of it.
