  • Today I attended my first ever Photographic Charter which was run at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway by 30742 Charters. All captured Hand held.
    The man in charge was well known photographer Alistair Grieve.
    This video includes some of the highlights of the day and shows some stunning clips captured throughout the day.
    A big thank you to Alistair, and all the Staff and Volunteers for doing whatever was asked of them during this wonderful day.

    Excellent and very atmospheric, there's nothing like a damp day in the valleys to show off a steam loco. Especially when you are in a place that hasn't seen proper rain since June. I remember these saddle tanks as a kid on Pontyberem station. Another clip to share! Pete

      Yes Pete, the previous day was Blue skies and little exhaust, so a dull damp day was just right, and with the Crews providing the effects, some wonderful clips could be captured....Bob

      Thanks Steve, being able to get the trains to start and stop whenever you wanted was a great option to get some special shots....We will see you at the Gala....Best wishes....Bob

    Wonderful job. I loved seeing those little tank engines alone, double-heading and going top and tail, and the effect was even better as Robert perfectly framed all of his shots. I can appreciate the time it took to set up each shot, because while I know how to do it, I usually just shoot without all the fussing.

      Your kind comments are greatly appreciated. I must say having everything done to your requirements rather than relying on your own assessment of a situation and then capturing it was a little strange, but this day allowed situations that would not normally occur to be captured. and being given the opportunity to video each movement from different angles with multiple movements, made it a worthwhile day.

    What a feast of smoke and steam with both locos giving all on the climbs to the top Bob, all expertly captured too! Pity the weather was overcast, but the fireworks from the locos certainly lit up the proceedings. Thanks shain. Ken

      The fact it wasn't sunny, was an advantage Ken, as it gave a greater choice of locations and lighting...Regards...Bob

    Well captured, Bob. Plenty of smoke and steam and two enthusiastic engines. I've done a couple of charters and they've been good days. Keith

      Thanks Keith, this was my first and probably the last...geared more for stills photographers than videographers...I did enjoy it, but had to keep away from the others to get a few decent shots...Regards...Bob

    Brings back childhood memories of the clank of loose coupled coal trucks. Great sound of those small locomotives as well.

    Wonderful stuff, Mister Masterson. Well worth the Christmas money. ;-) Thank you for posting. As one videographer to another, isn't it funny how photographers sometimes forget that there is audio with our video? Thanks again.

      Thanks very much, with reference to the stills photographers, I try whenever possible, to stay as far away from them as possible, although on this sort of event, it can be difficult.

    Very well done, Bob. Thanks for letting us be there by means of the video. Two notable highlights for me: the top-and-tail at 07:00 and the double-header at 12:00; not detracting from the excellent visual and audio throughout, especially hand-held. One question, what would you say the participant mix was between still and video? Kind regards, Bob.

      Thanks very much Bob, this was my first such event, and as expected, there was only three videographers, the remainder were stills photographers. For that reason, I tried to keep myself away from the photographers for the reasons that you're probably aware of. Regards...Bob

    They must be putting an old tyre in the firebox looking at the amount of smoke.

      It's Romanian Coal, which seems to be the best for these locos when working those steep gradients...They weren't designed to run on Best Welsh Steam Coal....The results of the softer coal is amazing sights to capture.

      Thanks Ger, there was about twenty Five in the Group, and with the vast majority using stills cameras, I had to distant myself from all the shutter noises...Has a great day though and very pleased with the results.

    Excellent video of the photo charter Robert 👍
    That was a great steam gala the railway put on and I enjoyed the event as well the fantastic choice of visiting locomotives.
    I like to see anything like a Southern theme for next year Steam Gala as I like to see something different at the railway.

    • @robmasterman
      @robmasterman  5 років тому

      Thanks Joe, much appreciated...The P&BR always put on a great show for their Autumn Gala, and have used many types of locos over the years. As this Railway is situated withing a World Heritage Site for the industrial heritage of the area...then SR locos wouldn't really fit the Brief...but who knows what the future will bring.

    What a super day, I'm sure you enjoyed that Bob..... I certainly did. Never know where Alistair is going to turn up lol. A great event but I bet it confused the locals!! Regards, Brian.

    • @robmasterman
      @robmasterman  5 років тому +1

      It certainly was Brian, and as I've never been to one before, I wasn't sure what to expect. As the day progressed, it got better and better, with the action away from where locals may have heard what was going on, but couldn't see much...Alistair was drafted in at the last minute, and fair play did an excellent job......Best wishes...Bob
