    From Leo: I love the 4 way conversion. It lets me make the bold rocker sounds and still lets me twang like a tele should be able. I still do it the old way with an Oak Grigsby switch. On a production line, the one extra piece of wire and the little extra for a switch could not cost them $2.00. I don't know why they don't all come that way.

    I was given a 920D four way as part of a birthday gift.

    I built my own version of a Richie Kotzen tele. I installed Tone-King and Chopper-T pickups and wired it through a 4-way switch. I don't have a boost circuit, but that's what pedals are made for. ;)

    How cool. This is an upcoming project -- this weekend or next. Already bought the switch, but this Fender one is a better deal. And another common mod while I'm at it: flip the switch plate so the switch is away from the strumming hand and the pots are closer.

    Very cool stuff you can do with a Telecaster. I have the Seymour Duncan 53 Tapped Tele pickups and I use a 5-way switch. Those are Seymour's favorite Telecaster pickups.
    From their website:
    "The tapped bridge pickup uses smooth Alnico 2 magnets, while the untapped reverse-wind/reverse polarity neck pickup has focused Alnico 5 magnets for a complementary tonal balance. Use with a standard Tele 3-way switch and push-pull pot for the tap, or wire it using Seymour’s custom wiring diagram, with a 5 way switch, for maximum tonal options (diagram and 5 way switch included when purchased as a set)."
    I highly recommend these pickups. The tonal variations are incredible and all of them sound good in their own way. They're a little bit more pricey but worth every penny. And having five different switch options makes it all the more fun.

    The Fender "Baja" Telecaster had the best wiring scheme- a 4 way switch and the S-1 switch to get out of phase sounds as well , so you got a total of 6 sounds out of it. And they had added circuitry to level out the volume when you were running in series. I actually use that circuit on a US Made Deluxe Telecaster as I prefer it.

    I have not yet particularly cared for a 4 way switch in an SS Telecaster. My experience is this: the series setting with clean tone is indeed a volume boost that is not unlike switching to a humbucker, but it’s not the neck humbucker tone for those warm Jazzy cleans a Tele with a neck humbucker can have. On the overdrive side, it pushes a pedal to overdrive more, but isn’t really a volume boost unless it’s just off completely clean with a lot of headroom left. My soloing overdrive Tele tones tend to come mostly (but not solely) from the bridge pickup, so that series setting doesn’t help there.
    It is a tonally interesting feature to mess around with but I am not sure it works for me, yet, on a bandstand or gig.
    Perhaps not surprisingly, I have yet to find that bonding and happiness with a Humbucker neck/single coil bridge Tele, either in gigging situations. I don’t find it’s an instrument that plays effortlessly with itself, and I’ve found myself being distracted by the output and tone of an HS Tele, trying to make those different pickup types in different places work together, seamlessly. Some day, maybe…

      3 positions is better for me. Front , both, back. I hate an accidental jump in volume from switching pickups. (That’s what a pedal is for) The tone in series isn’t awesome anyway.

    Series/parallel preference really comes down to the individual guitar and pickups. Having both isn't always practical or even beneficial. Depending on what your after, I've found that in most cases theres gonna be one way that just sounds better. The other options fall to the wayside. Having endless switching options is almost always kind of a waste. Figure out what you like best and keep it simple.

    • @douglasalexander4348
      @douglasalexander4348 2 місяці тому

      In that case, you must only have one pickup ? Because two is a waste ? I can’t really see why a switch that already has 3 positions becomes a waste when it has 4 ? Same with the phase switch, you don’t know it’s there, so what’s the negative ? Play a Les Paul junior if you want simple, it has a great tone.

      If they're wound Reverse polarity to each other yes.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed 2 місяці тому +2

      Yes, any two true single coils with one having reverse wind, reverse polarity to the other will cancel some 60 cycle hum in the combined switch position.
      This is how a typical Stratocaster works in positions two and four... unless it has 50s style wiring.

    • @marktulk4225

      Very good question, to a BAD TEACHER - He's using a "MULTI- METER", that measures a dozen things (VOM, common, is volt- ohm- miliamps) - but DOESN'T SAY WHAT HE'S METERING.
      - I play acoustic, above average (years) just getting into electrics.
      - So I'm "not allowed" into the cult, of pickup mods ?
      **My reasoning is that he's metering RESISTANCE (Ohms, see the selector- dial), but it's a SHIT- POOR EXCUSE FOR A TEACHER, who doesn't start out by taking 2 SECONDS to state that : "For you beginners, we're metering Ohms..."

    • @marktulk4225
      @marktulk4225 2 місяці тому

      PS- After watching 4 times, reading the comments - He reads the meter (once) as "10"K" ( or whatever number), so the meter must be measuring resistance - ohms - though if it's "9K", that's 9 THOUSAND Ohms.
      - Another problem here, is that resistance creates heat - but I don't think he literally means "heat".
      I'm a beginner at electric mods, so - my GUESS is that a pickup with higher resistance will create a larger, louder signal - when run thru the amp.
      ** I could be COMPLETELY WRONG, but have the identical question as you.
      - We prolly won't get an answer here, so I guess the best would be to POLITELY ASK at the repair counter of a guitar shop that does repair, or mods like this - or ask a guitarist who will be kind enough to answer OUR "dumb question".
      ** I think the meter is set to "Ohms- K", that- is RESISTANCE.
      - Good Luck, later, dude...
      - Mark, Michigan 8MARCH24

    • @fredstevens799
      @fredstevens799 2 місяці тому

      you've got it basically straight. pickup output (electric current) is generated by the coils of wire wrapped around the magnet in the pickup, as the strings' vibrations break the magnetic field lines. generally, the more wire in the coils, the more output (volume) for the pickup. the measurement of resistance (as you correctly inferred) is basically a proxy measurement of the amount of wire in the coils - the more wire, the more resistance, and the higher the output - "hotter" pickup. the resistance of the pickup is not the actual issue, rather just an indicator of the amount of wire in the coils. sometimes the terms "overwound" or "hot-wound" are used to describe pickup coils with extra windings that sound louder. Phil has done several vids on this and I think he often explains, but as you point out, not here. I also found googling "what is the meaning of measuring resistance in guitar pickups?" returned some useful information. hope this helps!

      @marktulk4225 not a bad teacher, it's been covered on his channel multiple times. Just the same as him, if I have said something several times, and have videos addressing that very issue, I'm not gonna always give an explanation to something I've already covered a dozen times over. He ain't a bad teacher, if anything, anyone saying that is a lazy student.
      On top of this channel it's been covered on several others as well. It's a pretty wide spread and understood test that can give an indication to how a pickup may behave. This guy has done so many how-to videos, and offered so much advice and tech tips over the years it's insane. If you missed class that's on you to do your homework and review the older material. Not his fault you're lost.

      @jcout The Emerson kits are somewhat pricey but not quite as offensive as you imply. The paper/oil cap is an expensive part like $20-$30 just for that alone (you either believe in the mojo there or you dont) and then you get the pots, the switch, the jack and the bit of labor in putting it together for you. Yeah if you don't care about all that stuff and you think what you already have for parts besides the switch are good enough then you can certainly save yourself a bunch.
