You are ringing up fond memories. I took some friends and a Hobie16 to South Padre Island one summer in the late 1960s. Good times. I overslept one morning, sleeping on the trampoline with my feet hanging over the side - sunburned the bottoms of my feet. Still able to catch waves, even surfed the Hobie from a wave over a mile offshore all the way to the sand. When you get enough wind, two standing out on the side and flying the hull is a major rush. (hint, move back toward the rudders to keep the down side hull pointing up so you avoid a pitchpole plunge.) Good vlog, keep it up.
Love the bridge opening up for the little wee Hobie! Good stuff! You've inspired me to get a Hobie 16 I was given out on the water instead of just sailing my mono-hull around!
You and How to Sail Oceans are definitely the best sailing channels. No BS, just sailing and general marine information. Perfect. p.s. I used to sail a Hobbie 16, so much fun, just don't flip it, huge pita.
I remembered that when exploring the mangroves, it was too shallow to sail when birds were standing on the bottom and once in a while I would get a jump-scare by a surprised tarpon.
Yeah, that was pretty amazing that Zoe just casually called from her wrist to get the guy to lift the bridge - while she was out on the trapeze! Couldn't have done that a few years ago. I caught the sailing bug on a Hobie 16 my Dad bought for us kids to use at the beach house, so much fun. My Mom thought it would be safer than the Sunfish far out of her sight in the Gulf of Mexico. (Ssh! We won't tell her how many times I tumped that thing over - with my dog aboard!)
@@mtadams2009 Absolutely! Not only does it keep your hands free, but it's good insurance too. Many phones are waterproof to certain depths now, but that only helps *if* you can find it after if slips overboard.
In the 1970s I had one of the first 16s ever. Hull number 243, sail number 250. We ran circles around everybody, it drew a crowd always. I would love to have it back
Did something similar 30 years ago on a Flying Scott on the Chesapeake. Hit a squall, 50 kts white-out conditions for 30 minutes. Dropped anchor and dragged sails down and back aboard. Within 5 minutes the waves were breaking over the bow and rolling into the cockpit. Sat on the bilge bailing with a bucket. Barely missed being run over by two powerboats also caught out. After it passed I could see we dragged 1/2 mile and my hands were bleeding pulling the anchor up. It was still fun
I got caught in about a 45 knot squall on the Currituck sound on the Outer Banks once in a rental Flying Scot. Waves hitting me in the face as I was at the back of the boat but everytime that bow jumped up in the air and screamed for more! That is what convinced me to buy a Flying Scot Hull # 82! ⛵🐬
I have camped with my Hobie 16 a number of times in the 30,000 Island area of Georgian Bay. The real challenge is that the Hobie doesn't have a lot of flotation to begin with, and loading up the trampoline makes jib handling quite challenging. To free up some of the trampoline , I made up a lightweight wooden skid that allows me to lash on items between the hulls ahead of the mast. You do need to make sure these are lightweight items to avoid pitchpolling. I have managed to go to remote locations for a week and camp with a high degree of comfort (folding table and chairs, tent, bug shelter etc.).
Super fun! Cat sailing is a lotta bang for the buck and was my entertainment of choice of 20 years. Get yourself a big dry bag or car top bag and lash it forward on the tramp. Then you can keep your gear dry and contained. Cheers!
When we lived in Oman we used to go sailing for long weekends. Pull the cats up onto the beach, above the water line. Take off the boom and put a tent on the trampoline. Great fun.
Saw someone do this in Northern Lake Michigan in 1975 at Mackinac Island. Drove the VW Mini-Bus straight home to St. Joe, MI and bought a Hobie 16! Been sailing many boats and many places for last 40 years!
You have no idea how science fiction that was talking on the Apple watch to a geezer like me. Dick Tracy 2 way radio wristwatch was fantasy back in the day and a routine fact of life today. Happy sail camping!

Siick!! What a great adventure, thanks for sharing. Coolest thing is, phoning ahead on i-watch to open bridge 😄 love it. Last time I was on a Hobie 16 was out to sea in Concarnau Bay North West France - a little colder than your trip I'm guessing.
Looks like fun. FYI, I pitch my free standing tent right on the tramp after removing the boom and setting it aside . In stable weather I don't use the fly and enjoy the night sky through the noseeum screen. You should try it.
Hi there or should I say Yarr! You remind Me of My sailing days, and when I was young and at sea. I was a sailor for a good 7 hours!!!!! And I only had to call out the LIFEBOAT Once!!!! : - ) True story that.
When do you anticipate getting back to the Pickled Herring? A point to note is thaf Sam is smiling - as usual! I know that I loved the trapeze on our 505. So much fun to look at the boat, just as it started planeing, as it lifted clear of the water and sailed on top of the water, not ploughing through it!
You are both having a whale of a time on your Hobie Cat. I have never sailed a Hobie but friends have. Very fast boats! My family owned a 505 dinghy that gave some Hobies a run for their money in reasonably strong winds.
I had some great sailing last summer on my resurrected Hobie wave, and plan on camping next season so thanks for the test run, i also use my Apple watch with the Strava app and set it to outdoor ride(bike) it shows your track, speed, heart rate, max speed and other stats, and a compass app too , good times.
I would suggest sleeping pads. The trapeze is just like a hammock and having no insulation under you is worse than sleeping on the ground. A sleeping bag is useless as you compress all of the fill/insulation. You either need a pad or suspend a blanket under the trapeze so you aren't compressing it. Ie an under quilt. You insulation comes from the dead air insinuation and not necessarily the material itself.
Hobie camping sounds awesome! You should cruise around the Berry Islands or Exumas with it. Its fast enough to get to the Berry's in two days with a night at Bimini.
That looks like so much fun! When you're camping on it, I think putting a tarp down over the trampoline would be useful to block the wind. I've slept out on trampolines before, and they are cold! They don't hold any heat next to your body at all. An inflatable camping mattress pad would probably be helpful too. Those things are really only comfortable for casual naps.
Look into super lightweight silnylon rain flies. I've DIY'd them. Instead of grommets, sew grosgrain loops along the hems. They take up no space, easy to deploy.
Sam you're my fav sailing youtuber. What is the red ryder about seriously LOL. Mountain Lion attacks, pirate deterrent bluff... or..?. Its killing me I can't figure a reason. I'm afraid I won't be able to sleep until I know.
