Federal Signal Vista Lightbar; What and Why

- The Federal Signal Vista lightbar was either the natural progression from the StreetHawk, or an imitation of the Code 3 MX7000. The bar came in Halogen and strobe upper levels, the bottom portions were the same between the two. I demonstrate both styles and give some commentary while activating features.

I get why everyone hates this lightbar from a collecting standpoint, but they were really good in a functional professional standpoint, as long as they weren’t the strobe version. NYSP used these in halogen for years, with the Cuda LEDs as secondary lights towards the rear. The NYSP Vistas were the first time I had ever seen blue LEDs, too; they were so bright on pitch black New York highways that you could always see them for miles. They didn’t wash out the rotators nearly as much as they did the strobes on OSHP bars, though.
Can you tell me why people hate this from a collecting standpoint? Also, do you think they will ever become valuable in the future decades?
@@ml9867 they’re far too wide to comfortably fit among other more conventionally-sized lightbars, and they’re too common to have any sort of scarcity that would make them stand out within a collection.
I have several from NY state police. They were red domes, clear center dome, 2 red Cuda LED up front and 1 blue and 1 amber in the rear. But a few bars had 2 blue, 1 red and 1 amber facing the rear.
I've always loved the Code 3 MX7000's and Excalibur lightbars.
Excalibur makes my skin crawl knowing it's a half lower level
We had these on our cars. They were above average as far as a lightbar was concerned, but when the entire bar was activated the amperage draw was pretty high especially with all the front and rear facing lights being halogen. The noise level inside the passenger compartment was also very noticeable. Thank goodness for led light bars.
So, I always said: "if I ever get a Vista, it'll have to have clear domes, it'll have to be within pickup distance, and it'll have to be free." And, years later, guess what happened last night? You guessed it, I got a clear dome red/blue strobe Vista for free, just a short subway ride away from me in NYC. Standby for the incoming video.
My personal favorite is the Street Hawk. I absolutely loved that light bar. It was my first full-size light bar that I had when I was a Volunteer Firefighter. That thing was BRIGHT. I got rid of it before I PCS to Korea.
This is the first lightbar I ever had. I loved how easy it was to change the domes & inner lenses for my color needs. Unfortunately, mine does not have take downs, but is otherwise nearly fully populated. In the future, I hope to add take downs & front & rear turn signals/parking lights since it's got two center sections. I was hoping all of the halogen bulbs everywhere would help prevent accumulating snow, but it doesn't. A neat feature is the ability to manually angle the alley lights somewhat forward to better find house numbers.

This really makes me wonder why they didn't make the Vector a true dual-level bar... use the Firebeam 3 rotator and have lots of real estate for wide-focused alleys and angled intersections, flashers/TAs facing the rear, pursuits/takedowns/floods facing forward. Could have been a killer full-featured lightbar instead of a basic Streethawk replacement with an optional TA
I am just waiting for a few more decades until lightbars are reduced to a single flashing lamp so infernally bright that you can't miss it.

I wanted to forget, but yes that is a good point. That bridged the gap between the vista and arjent.
These lightbars were popular back in the early 2000 with Nashville Metro Police, one problem was that they were strobes with center blue rotators that none of the officers knew they worked. It was very rare to see the lighter fully functional because of the bad training these officers got on the equipment. This bar had 4 strobes, 2 take downs, 2 alley lights, 2 intersection, 2 front flashers and 2 rear flashers, and of course the center rotator that nobody used.

You should do a video on the MX7000 with the dual color tech. Curious how it sold or performed as LED bars had started showing up more and more.
I have a video on D-tech, but I only have the one generation and only in "slow". They were terrible in fast. I'd love to get a full dual color dtech bar to mess with. Here is what I have now:

What kind of amperage is that thing pulling fully lit up???
One of the big visual issues was the light bleed if you used clear lenses plus between the levels. Having some separation block between the levels would have helped. The wash of the white bulb would somewhat drown the color over the lenses.
Yes this was a huge issue and even worse in strobe.
I have 2 of these Vista light bars. I think I may sell them. Both are in good working condition. Where is the best place to list them?
Locally. Facebook marketplace etc. Shipping is awful because of shape and weight.
