- I’d love to hear your thoughts on these. I don’t think I played the Aquila strings as loud as I could have in the fingerpicking sample. Anyway, I prefer the Aquilas.
These are the strings I used:

I liked the Aquilas in the strumming samples better, but I liked the original strings for fingerpicking. The Aquilas were more mellow and resonant.
I think the Aquila strings sound soft and dull. I'd love to hear that ukulele with a fresh set of high-quality fluorocarbon strings, particularly for fingerpicking/chord melody-style playing.
Hi Larry. Thanks for being here. Admittedly, Aquila strings don’t excite me very much either. But I still think it is a vast improvement from the original strings. I have heard that fluorocarbon strings are better suited for solid wood instruments, but have yet to test that theory 😉 (Thanks for subscribing!!)
The Aquila strings sound "mushy" to me. I preferred the original strings, just because it sounded a bit happier / brighter.
Thanks for all your recent comments. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on my next string comparison (I will be going in the other direction- swapping out Aquila’s for Martin’s on my Bruce Wei soprano. )
@@girlmeetsuke2980 I look forward to the comparison!
I prefer fluorocarbon on my Enya Nova U and my solid top mahogany tenor. I like the brighter sound. The Aquila sound muted... almost like one isn’t pressing the strings down hard enough.
Thank you for this video! I was interested to hear the sound difference! I prefer the sound of the aquila strings a bit more! Sounds smoother!
Great comparison! The original strings (it seems like I read Enya has their own that are fluorocarbon?) sound tinnier to me. The Aquila strings sound much smoother to me. Thanks for doing this!
Oh, could you possibly link to your puffball mic?
Sure- www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MSKI46R?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title
The Aquila strings seem more bright and clear. I’ve recently tried Living Water Fluorocarbon and I’d love to see you try some of those. Also, cute uke!
Hey Jodi! The Enya’s projected better, were brighter, and I felt had better sustain up and down the fretboard. The Aquila’s had a warmer tone, but one that sounded a bit muted to me. The difference in projection/loudness could simply be the room acoustics, as it looks like you recorded from a different spot?
You are right. I was sitting in a different spot in the room. I didn’t even think about that! I will be sure not to repeat that mistake.
Aquila. They sound higher quality, smoother.
I'm looking forward to all your string reviews. Next I'm wanting to try a higher tension strings, so I'll be interested to hear if any of the ones you're trying seem higher tension. I've only tried Aquilas and Worth Browns. I prefer the Worth Browns, but either way I'm still wanting something with more tension for finger picking.
Original ones sound almost banjo like. Bright and twangy (is that a word?). Aquila are much richer and warmer. Playing one after another was great. Some people play one and then talk in between playing the next. I like how you edited it. Excelent job!
Thank you. Yes, I prefer to hear them immediately after each other. I’m glad you did too!
Aquila all the way! I have a Donnor tenor that came with some unbranded nylon strings. I almost sent it back as the A string was very dull, and almost drowned out by the other strings. I put some Aquila Lava strings on it, and it changed the entire sound. The A string now rings like a bell!
It’s pretty amazing what a little string change can do!
Hi Jody :) Great comparison! Interestingly enough, I have the same uke, but in the concert size (I purchased it on eBay a couple of months ago). It's a wonderful little solid spruce top uke, that I like far better than I expected to (I found it at a bargain price and was concerned it would be a little cheap, but it's actually very nice). It came with the stock Enya strings, which I wasn't crazy about, pretty much for the same reasons you stated. On day one, I changed the strings out, but instead of Aquila Super Nylgut, I opted for D'Addario Nyltech strings, which are similar. I like the Nyltech strings on mine soooo much better than the original Enya strings.
Listening to your comparison, I was surprised that I actually liked the sound of the Enya strings...but not as much as Aquila strings. The Aquila strings sound a little more mellow to me. The place where the Enya strings fell short for me was by the way they felt (I liked your description of "wimpy", which actually is pretty spot on)...the feel of Aquila strings are a lot nicer and more comfortable than the Enya strings, in my opinion. The D'Addario Nyltech are the same...they just feel more substantial than the Enya strings, at least to me. :)
I own three Enya ukuleles, and I've changed out the strings on all three. Two now have the D'Addario Nyltech, and one has D'Addario Titanium strings. I prefer the Nyltech over all though.
Great video!
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with enya. They definitely have some models that are a great value. I have a concert with a solid mahogany top from them. Interestingly, I do like the strings that that one came with. They feel much more substantial than the ones the soprano came with.
I think I like the new strings a bit more . Warmer sound on the new strings . Thank you
Wow--such different sounds. To me, the originals sounded brighter, the Aquila warmer. No preference here--both sounded nice to me.
I don't think I like Aquila Super Nylgut but someone said the ones that come on ukes are not the same as the Retail ones. I do like the Aquila AG/AQ
Beautiful Ukulele Music!
Aquila for the win!
Lots of people like that fishing line type of string but I never really got into them. Though I guess when your making thousands of ukuleles it must be coast effective to go that way. In fact don't they give you an extra set of strings with the ukulele?
They didn’t with this model, but I did get an extra set with the concert I won from Vasko. (I keep trying to get him to bring back the monthly challenge, but he’s not convinced. 😞)
The Aquila sounds better. I agree with you. That particular Enya has a thin sound. Must be the build. I have 2 Enya ukuleles and They have a beautiful warm sound. A little on the soft quiet side but I like that about them.
I have aquila strings (im pretty sure) on 2 of my 4 ukes. And now with my new enya, im appreciating it's different sound color. Personally i dont think tinnier means toyish or cheap. Ive had a "toy" uke to try and the strings hardly made a pitch and had no sustain.
Those Aquila strings make it sound really nice :)
Thank you for making this very helpful video! I prefer Aquila. The enya strings sounded clearer than Aquila but I absolutely love the warm and smooth sound with the Aquila strings.
I'm curious if you found any difference on how they both feel on your fingers.
Great question. The Aquila strings are ‘chunkier’. Thicker and a little tougher on the fingers. These particular fluorocarbon strings felt very thin and almost too loose (low tension). Great for a child, but I just felt like it produced a weaker sound as well.
I like the sound of the Aquila strings; they sound warmer and less “tinny” or toy-like.
As for help with sound...that’s out of my league! Thanks for the sound comparison, though.
Stay warm, and stay safe. We’re expecting another winter storm. How about you?
Thank you. I have no idea. It was 60° today but I wouldn’t mind more winter ❄️
The Aquila strings sound a lot warmer. The original strings make the uke sound cheap. The Aquila strings give the uke an intangible quality. Thanks.
I prefer the Aguila strings, they sound louder and warmer. Gives me a fuller and more professional sound
I dont know which strings i like better, they are different. I think the original strings, while brighter, and maybe a little dead sounding, were also more articulate. The Aquila were definitely warmer. Is it possible to be warm and articulate?
As far as recording, IK Multimedia makes several microphones that may work for you, but I have no experience with their mics. www.ikmultimedia.com/products/index.php?R=INIT&FV=product-type-menu-microphones&CV=Product&PSEL=Microphones
But being a gear junkie, maybe a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and Shure SM57?
Enya strings are fluorocarbon, so you are listening to a comparison of fluorocarbon vs nylgut.
I prefer Aquila ❣️
Aquila string's makes a big difference. I don't like the Enya string sound, and my fingers seem to get tangled up on their strings, doesn't do it on any other string's..
I don’t really notice the difference in strings but good vid
To me, the original strings sound a little "tinny" and flat which might be good for old-time/campy tunes but the Aquilas are much more warm and even sound more resonant. So, the Aquila strings get my vote.
I’d have to agree. I think the Aquila strings helped with intonation as well.
mhm, for me the enya strings sonds better. it is more lovley not so raw.
