How to do Ustrasana | Camel Pose in Ashtanga Yoga’s Intermediate Series

  • While Ustrasana is one of the more accessible backbends in Ashtanga’s Intermediate Series, these tips will allow you to find more openness & ease within the pose.
    In this tutorial, we’re showing you how to do USTRASANA \ CAMEL POSE from Ashtanga's Intermediate Series. Though this pose is often practiced in other schools of yoga, we give you the traditional vinyasa cues and Sanskrit count as practiced in the Ashtanga tradition. You’ll learn how to find extension through the hips, where to deepen into the backbend, and why we use a specific arm position, with coordinates and tips for correct alignment to help you avoid injury and discomfort. You’ll know where to place more awareness in the pose and how to access it in a way that feels good in your body.

    I was introduced to Ashtanga yoga almost 15 years ago and have been intermittently practising ever since as a self-learner… however, having scoliosis makes my body unbalanced so having proper alignment is challenging. Your tutorials along with the Liforme mat have been a game changer and I so grateful for it. I’ve seen more progress in the few months I’ve been following your videos than in the years I was practising consistently. I love your explanations so much that I’ve sent your videos to my brother who has never practised yoga before and he has loved them too. My dream is to be able to do the full primary series one day so it would be great if you do a series addressing every asana in the primary series that is left. Thank you so much for your commitment to spread the knowledge and empower us to build a safe and long-lasting yoga practice!!!

    Thanks for this edifying video and for “the adopt, don’t shop” PSA. (Mr. Khani should receive an honorary doctorate and become Dr. Khani.👨‍🎓🐭) I like the way David calls the backbends from 2nd series a “nice little backbending sequence”… That’s a euphemism, right? 😆

    Always helpful, especially in regards to the anterior pelvic tilt, Scapular positioning and pushing forward with the hips with soft downpressed arms. Thanks

    Another great Tutorial.❤Love them, dear Jelena and David. Every time I watch you, there are a lot of new „aha -moments“ (….today this moment came, when you‘ve talked about the role that the bump and the legs/feets play in Camel pose) .I did not realize that in such a clearness before. 🙏.     Love your detailed tutorials. Your tutorial on Purvatanasana saved my shoulder (I think it was one of your on-line workshops). The internal rotation cue truly saved my shoulder and I no longer hate that pose.

    Also, laghu is much more enjoyable than this pose… At least in laghu the hips can travel back. 🤷🏻‍♀️
