the reason why the NVLINK configuration is a bit slower is because of how these cards are made, they have extra settings to tweak around with so that the cards are spreading the workflow evenly, this causes dips in performance since the pcie slots are at a different bandwidth. the cards are meant for production and a professional environment so these wanted it to spread the workload evenly to decrease the time it take to render certain things and whatever it might be used for.
this doesn't work in games as well as it would doing a render or some other games this entirely depends on how the game processes and renders itself.
in a rendering application or a work environment the programs needed have a toggle on how the program processes and renders its information.
i suck at explaining things so ill simplify in this reply
the rtx5000 with nvlink splits the workload evenly among the 2 gpus, this is good for rendering and editing, and things were this is needed, but in a gaming environment this will cause frame loss or loss of fps due to it taking longer to process the information. the reason it takes longer to process the information is because it's separating the workload evenly even though the pcie slots are using a different bandwidth.
the reason it's slower with nvlink is some games than just using a single card is entirely the motherboards fault in this case.
the cpu also has problems processing information from the gpu if you have 2 of these cards. the gpu takes longer to process the information from 2 cards since it has to search for the information and with 2 cards it takes longer than just one. this is similar to the ram density problem when some ram would just put more compacity but slow it down since it was to dense or not dense enough. it's entirely dependent on so many things and with the amount of vram these cards have it will slow down game performance even more, the best way to fix this is to push the absolute most out of the games so that it is updating information more.
it's not a problem that will be fixed it's just a problem of how our computers process the information given to them.

Do sata to 8 pin connectors actually work?
It's not ideal, but we've been successfully using dual sata to 8pin GPU adapters when using a powerful enough PSU.
how fast is the workstation for aftere effect?
We haven’t tried it with that software.
Only if there was a way to unleach the full 100% usage of the GPU's the FPS would be just HUGE

Yes, it works really well in CAD and Video editing environments.

I would like to get dual 3090s, but at nearly 5.2K with resale prices, I’d rather just get a RTX 8000, but I want to save a bit of money and only spend 2.7K with two RTX 5000s for a total of 32GB VRAM....
