If you are in S, the front dial controls SS on my OM-1. And the back well does Exposure Comp. Since as a wildlife shooter I am in S pretty much all the time. Lens is always on max aperture as there is never enough light.
Thank you Emily. I use the BBF coupled with C-AF mode all the time. A short touch on BBF works like S-AF mode and a continuous touch tracks the moving subject. I practise wildlife photography on the prowl or on beating hunt. Focusing in dense wooded field is not easy. When the animal moves through vegetation, the focus is often on the vegetation and the animal is out of focus. In this cas, the animal tracking function does not detect the subject. In open Field, no problem. In manual focus mode, the action speed does not allow precise adjustment with a 40-150 zoom lens. (variable distance, AF ring sensitivity). I'm always looking for improvements. Love your gloves too. My English is not as good as yours. Hope you understand what I mean.
Thank you for sharing! Yes shooting in dense wooded areas can be a challenge for AI detect. I know what you mean and sometimes, using one point focus is best. Your English is excellent by the way!
You forced me to check my setups, because I didn’t know how I had left them. Turned out all my cameras are set with shutter on the front dial in Manual mode. When I shoot macros, I am usually on a tripod, mostly focus stacking in post, so either use a remote shutter or focus bracketing. If shooting HDR sets, I still use a remote. I do not do much handheld macro shooting. As for birds in flight (or birds in general), I am very much a beginner. (Fwiw, I use Lumix cameras, most recently the G9M2. I do have and love the OM 90mm macro lens.)
Thank you, Emilie. I use BBF for bird photography (thanks to you & Lee!), and since I rarely change my aperture in that situation, I have my front dial for shutter speed, and my rear dial for ISO. As with BBF, it took some getting used to, but I like it now. Always appreciate your tips!
That made a lot of sense to me because I should dial in the shutter speed based on the action more. I have a manual lens for macro so apeture is always set on the lens.
Thank you, Emily. I changed my setting to use the BBF because Tato and Marta (from Indomitus and previous OM-System ambassadors) told me that it was a must for astro photography. I easy got used to it. I think that for macro it is also a must (and for every thing).
Thanks for this tip. I’ve been often conflicted with the issue of BBF and changing shutter speed while shooting bird in flight….not remembering that the OM-1 is capable of such awesome customization 😊.
Haha, I always shoot birds in flight in aperture priority mode! 😃 Before I got my Olympus 300/2.8 I used an old manual focus Nikon 500/4 (sometimes using a speedbooster to get a 350/2.8) and I think I used aperture priority even with that lens. I guess I think the camera is better than me at choosing a shutter speed that gives a decent exposure. 🙂
Sorry to hear about your hand. It is interesting to hear about all the different shooting style and options and then we can use what works the best for our phototgraphy.
hi Emilie I set my shutter speed to the mm of the lens plus some extra. I have it set to 1250th of a second as standard. the aperture is always wide when photographing birds. I control the exposure by playing with the ISO value. I change the ISO values with the dial
Great info especially for older cameras & DSLR. I read an article that with the new mirrorless & whole frame wide coverage AF systems that the author was using the Shutter for the AF because of the wide frame AF coverage 7 felt no need for the BBF anymore. I'm still using a DSLR but it made sense as I read it. I'm sure a lot of mirrorless users are still using BBF & the way you have set up yours makes the most sense. Now I have to see if my camera offers this change dial option. Great tip, thank you for the vid.
Thanks for this video. I use BBF, have trouble remembering which dial does what. I have made the change you suggested. Your instructions were easy to follow as I have an OM1 too. Hopefully as it makes more sense to me it may help me to remember which dial does what.
I always used the front dial for shutter speed, probably because my old camera only had 1 dial.😂 Using an Olympus for the first time I didn't like the dial settings and changed it.
Emilie thanks for the video. I take pictures with a Panasonic gx9 camera. When I press the back focus button and I hold it, the automatic focus does not activate on the front shutter button when pressed. Although I have it set to half-press, so that it focuses immediately and takes a photo immediately. You said, your front shutter button does refocusing in this scenario with back button focus.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to give it a try. I also shoot in manual mode and find changing ISO a bit challenging with gloves on. When it's really cold, i have to keep glove liners on under any sort of flip-back glove or mitt. Suggestions?
I understand the logic, but I don’t use back button focus for high speed bird-in-flight photography, which to me seems counterintuitive. (I do use BBF in other custom modes, however.)
Thanks Emily. I’ve used BBF for years and like you love Macro(just getting started) and wildlife. I have trouble with dial buttons in the winter (yesterday-18C here) I take my gloves or mits off and my arthritic fingers get sore and stiffen up. So I generally set my shutter speed and aperture once and keep my gloves on. Yesterday I found a bard owl but it was deep in a pine. I tried to manual focus with magnify and blinkies on my 100-400 Oly lens but had to take my gloves off and couldn’t use the focus ring well. Maybe I need gloves like yours? Where did you get them? Thanks! Scott
Emilie, Have a OM-1 Mark II. I have use BBF for ever. Am I right the Pro Capture will not work with BBF. I think you have to enable the normal half press on the shutter button when using Pro Capture setting? Can you please confirm this for me?
All this would be easily resolved if OM would put an aperture ring on the lense. The front dial could be SS and the back dial exposure compensation. This make perfect sense.
Makes sense but feels horrible. I tried a while back and it just didn't feel as intuitive to me, in fact the complete opposite. I'm rarely changing shutter speed while in focus and the time changing shutter speed I'm recomposing a scene or looking for birds and movement so it serves a purpose. Good tip for some though.

Been using back button focus since 2007 when I bought my first dSLR the Canon 30D
Thank you dear Emilie for the tip ! I have been searching for that setting and couldn't find it.
You’re welcome 😊 I am happy to help :)

I have changed bbf, but not changing the shutter speed…thanks so much
Thank you for the tip I’ve just altered the saved setting I use for birds occasionally (U1) on my Z7 II. Makes total sense 👍

I made that change after watching one of Lee’s videos. It does make sense.
Lee has the best advice!

Glad the video was helpful
Thanks Emily. Great idea. I almost never change my aperture but always mess with the shutter speed.. Good one.
I am happy this is helpful.
Thank you, Emily, very interesting and as you say it makes sense.😎
Glad it is helpful

Love your OM-1 tips! Thanks Emilie!!! ✌
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks Emilie. My hand mobility is compromised so back button doesn't work for me but, I always enjoy hearing about different camera setups.

changed! CHECK👍
Like the concept. Will have to think on it though. Thanks.
Try it out and if it doesn't work well, you can still go back to the original set up.
Interesting point Emilie. May try out. Currently I am in Madeira with blue sky and sun so no cold fingers 😏😉🥰
Lucky you! Enjoy!

Hi Emilie, great explanation and worth to try it. Question....what gloves are you using😉
I am using the promaster gloves. I made a video about them: ua-cam.com/video/ORvDQoIZ3OI/v-deo.htmlsi=7Mz_Yx5_OkEQBBUt

Can you assign those dial settings to a c-mode? One for micro and another for birds?
I was about to ask the same thing!!
Yes you can. My macro settings which is C3 has front dial as aperture and back as shutter speed right now and my c1 and 2 have the opposite.
@@EmilieT perfect 👍

Hmmmm ... never thought of that
Génial!

It is a problem we all have, unfortunately. Liners are the way to go and mittens in cold situations, I also use a hand warmer inside my gloves.

Great tip. I just picked up my OM1 and I'm still setting up my camera. Is there a way to set up a button to turn on and off Auto iso?

Look interesting gloves. What make are they and where did they come from. Thanks.
Those one are from Promaster.

Those are made by Promaster. They are ok but not for extremely cold situations: promaster.com/Search?term=gloves&x=0&y=0
Can this be set up as a custom function?
Yes this will stay if you save it as a costume function for C1 etc
Emilie, Have a OM-1 Mark II. I have use BBF for ever. Am I right the Pro Capture will not work with BBF. I think you have to enable the normal half press on the shutter button when using Pro Capture setting? Can you please confirm this for me?
Pro capture does work with BBF but when you switch to pro capture you will need to half press the shutter to start pro capture.

Mam make vdo on back button focus step by step with practical , previous vdo not make clear idea about BBF.
