I wanted Maxxine to be more of an unhinged character study (like Pearl was) and see her go absolutely nuts- like the “monster” from the Bette Davis quote. But instead we got a crime thriller with a predictable twist about her past that was sooo ridiculous. If we want her past to haunt her I don’t need to see her actual father 🙄 felt too easy to me.
I don’t know; I feel like what you wanted would’ve been a bit expected as well. Everyone was theorizing this so I’m not sure how original that would’ve been either. The previous films technically followed all old tropes of films; what set them apart was the added depth to the characters that was able to happen because of the limited amount of actors. This film had at least double the cast.

The part where Maxine is at the premiere was a Fantasy scene of what how she saw her future life after the movie is released and her dad dead. The Richard park is to let the audience know that Maxine didn’t get charged with any murders, and the last part where they’re filming and taking a moment of silence is the real ending, she’s back on set about to film the movie 🍎🔪
The Night Stalker plot point really threw me off. No idea why that was included except that it was happening at the time, like. It wasn’t interesting and distracted from the actual plot. Think you guys nailed this review, I enjoyed MAXXXINE but I think it’s prolly the weakest of the series of films.
Part of the father's plan to get away with the murders was to stage his victims to look like the Night Stalkers. The cops say that they are staged to look that way when they confront Maxine in the morgue.
It was extremely distasteful. Just make up a different name for a serial killer on the loose, don’t use an actual one + trigger the loved ones of the victims. It didn’t even make sense bc the night stalker murdered the elderly in their homes.
THANK YOU guys for mentioning that absolutely absurd chase in the middle of the film. And also that final third of the film was unbearably over the top and stupid. As soon as the guns came out from underneath the robes, I was ready for the credits to roll. Pearl is still by far the best entry in this series. I doubt I'll ever watch the other two again.
Agree! I think he was too stuck on keeping the 80s slasher vibe- it didn’t feel current (complex) in the way it needed to be and it was thoroughly predictable
The protesters were also some of the cult members. Also there were two endings: 1. A fantasy ending for the first and 2. A more realistic ending a month after all the carnage where the filming of Puritan 2 picks up. It could be confusing, I guess.
This was the one movie I was looking forward to and I was disappointed. The ending under the Hollywood sign was dumb .But there were several 80s references that I liked. When Maxine was at the club and Kevin Bacon is looking for her, that club is absolutely based on the Frankie Goes to Hollywood Relax video. They are even playing FGTH's Welcome to the Pleasure Dome. And her father's house is based on the house in Body Double. Those were the few things I liked about it.

I loved House of the Devil also. Which also had a similar background type story where it was all about the occult and full moon that was being highlighted on the news in the background. Such a fun 80’s type movie. I will certainly check it out because I like Ti West although X seemed to have similar issues as it seems this film has imo. It’s nice to see Kevin bacon still working I have always liked him. Thx guys 😉
That looks to be Micah Monroe best performance. Not to rude. Besides God Is A bullet. Most her characters are the same ish. And if Nic Cage is the killer. Oh man
Also felt like it wanted to be Scream movie in which ID of killer is major plot point, but unlike Scream none of her friends / colleagues are ever suspects etc. I would have found that more interesting. People killing to eliminate competition etc. At end big reveal of her dad felt underwhelming. As a viewer there is no fun guessing game before the reveal like u can enjoy in Scream
Comparing West to Tarantino, to me, is definitely a spot on take. I think Pearl was his best, but I did enjoy X as well - however, Maxxxine just felt like we completely lost the plot. Talk about all style & no substance. We didn’t learn too much about her in X (which I was fine with cuz it was an ensemble movie), but the fact that by the end of Maxxxine we still don’t know much about her was pretty disappointing. Definitely not the best of the trilogy, but I’d still be happy to watch any other films in this universe. I’m wondering if Ti West will continue in any other directions- Maxine as a child, or her horror film she was starring in (perhaps as a comedy?). I agree House of the Devil is West’s best film. Great review guys!
Fun fact in 1985 bette Davis was still working but very sick. She had an estranged daughter named bd hyman who was a fire and brimstone televangelist and resented her for putting men and her career before her. Horror saved bette's career.

It was def disappointing. I think a lot of us really fell in love with Mia and the X universe and were extremely let down by this film. As you guys stated the first two were B films with A acting and story telling and this was a B- at best all around. It was predictable and they kind of made Maxine kinda meh by the end. Really love Mia and hope to see more from her tho! Nice review, thanks!
I rewatched it yesterday. Now that I knew what to expect it wasn't as disappointing but it really is a mess of ideas. I still love Mia. But I dont think i'll watch this one anymore.
I found Pearl the most entertaining and interesting of the trilogy. X was innovative and this was fun in a nostalgic and thematic way but definitely the least interesting out of the three...
I liked the movie enough, but I really wish they would have not made her father the killer. Right when they were about to reveal it I was like, "Please don't do it, please don't do it, pleasssseeeee doooonnnnn't...you did it 😐"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It feels really detached from the original "X" film. It definitely needed to be developed a bit more, hopefully if Ti West does another installment he takes his time with Maxine's story.
The cinematography, set design, and costume/hair/makeup design was great, unfortunately the plot felt very loose for me, if there was even much of a plot at all. There were a lot of random or useless scenes that didn’t contribute to the film, and just felt like time filler. There also wasn’t really any motivation behind maxine’s father becoming a preacher turned mass killer/cult leader.
This was the weakest of the trilogy for me. It was meh in every way. Pearl was so haunting and created such creepy back story for X. This follow up was a big change in tone. The Night Stalker storyline didn’t really add much. The “twist” with the dad was not satisfying. Losing the contained setting of the farm also really hurt this film. Having the sprawling, seedy backdrop of LA did not serve this story well. I really liked the lawyer and the private investigator, too. They were the best part. I agree with Joseph on that. The part I hated the most was the death of Maxine’s (gay?) black friend. I feel like they slipped into the old and tired trope of an a-sexual black male friend who is there just to be killed in a super graphic way.
Thanks for another fun review! I was debating on seeing this or Kinds of Kindness...I'm going to go with KOK this evening at the Laurelhurst Theater in Portland. Cheers!
I took the Hollywood premiere of Puritan II and the interview where Maxine reveals she’s sold her life rights and Elizabeth DeBicki is directing her biopic to be a dream sequence. Right after, it cuts back to her with her shotgun over her dad, and that’s when she decides to shoot him. The “1 Month Later” scene where they’re on set is them wrapping the last scene for Puritan II, which is why they have a moment of silence for the actress who was murdered. It felt unnecessary since it didn’t lead to any kind of juxtaposition, like “this is what could’ve happened had she obeyed the police and not shot her dad in front of them.” Weird how she did that and everything turned out fine lol
I don't think Ti West can write a third act to save his life. The best bit was Lily Collins doing the scream thing and talking about a girl from Yorkshire doing an American accent that, even tho Goth isn't from Yorkshire, both seemed to be commentary about Pearl.
I was disappointed but still some cool characters and moments. I wanted more. When the cop said she could save the next girl I was hoping that's where the ending was going. Maxine is a fighter. I wanted her to step up and go off like when that creep caught her in the alley. I wanted her to go from prey to predator. I wanted her to Final Girl the sh*t out of the 3rd act and have a look at the camera when the movie ended where she knows how badass she is and will become the star she wanted to be. Sigh.
The movie was good but a lil confusing 1st of all the Private investigator it seemed like he didn’t know about why her dad wanted her or to kill her then he seemed to try to help her then he went full out trying to get her but never really just kidnapped her but just chased her around… showing her evidence of the events of X and him trying to expose her but even still all she had to do was explain she and her friends were terrorized idk just didn’t make sense. Also with all the news surrounding the night stalker why didn’t they put security around her and the other actors? They were more worried about the movie than the girls getting snatched up… Then Maxine’s character didn’t have much emotion. She didn’t even seem scared or worried about the killings going on all she did was get high. Only emotion she had was for her friend getting killed. The end seemed rushed. Also the dad’s cult was so random plus they all had guns at the ready. They should’ve just rethought the whole movie
Ti West managed to put out two awesome films in the trilogy back to back. Yet the third took the longest to make and was mid. Weird. MaXXXIne was a good looking and somewhat fun film. Dug the 80s giallo, seedy crime thriller direction they took. But it had terrible editing, weak sauce writing, a predictable villain, and zero tension. C+ overall.
I hadn’t seen the two movies before but now after watch this I don’t understand how they were black mailing her either n plus the chase on the set made me so mad I had to literally pause the movie!
Theda was also the name of Pearl's alligator. She calls its name to feed it the goose.
Love the callback to the goose in the strip club/porn set, having it be the coke holder 😂

The film takes from the giallo genre and if you have seen said genre you would get it. Absurdity and being over the top is what makes this film shine.

What a Disappointment,Hated this movie,Loved the previous 2
Im guessing the extra that got kicked was probably during all the fathers follwers that got shot.
X was aight. Loved Pearl.
Thank you for watching this so I don’t have to.
I like how these films address family trauma. But this one was definitely a little messy and uneven.
The 80s looks were down pat. Sans the fx/make up girl on the Puritan. Looked like modern day art hipster. You see in any coffee shop in a city
I agree this was definitely my least favorite of the trilogy
This film is like The Switch blade Sisters both good to watch.
Did Lily Collins make an error & they kept it in? Her character called Maxine "Nadine" or did I create that in my head?
Her dad called her a monster
I wanted a twist at the end. I knew we would see daddy, but I wanted for like him to be controlling the Night Stalker. Or something like that.
Yes 👍
Back from a second watch. Early 80s Depalma influence. A lil Hollywood Vice squad too.
I didnt enjoy this but Mia Goth should do an action movie
Sigh.
What about a prequel sequel something around 1960s with Howard and pearl along with Maxine in her early teens and her father
So 'Pearl' is the best one snd could just stand on its own.
Well yes, but I’d consider more of prequel origin story than a trilogy.
The mansion is the one in Psycho 2
I waited ages for this movie. I was kind of disappointed.
