Why is it so sad? There's plenty of housing in this country now. Most cities have hotel rooms that they offer now. It's not sad he doesn't want to be housed because he doesn't want to pay any of his welfare check towards rent. He just wants to sit in this cardboard house and do drugs. Myself being born and raised in England, we have a very rose tinted view of America, with all the films we see or I have seen bar one that actually showed tent city and people struggling through losing their jobs, their homes and of course people struggling with addiction. I don’t not believe people want to be living like this?? We all need a helping hand from time to time when we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. I am fortunate never to have been homeless and out of work and in the same breath this could be either of us next week! So to show compassion and express sadness is not a crime or a platform for others to be asking questions as to why I genuinely feel sad for this man and others that find themselves in the same situation, I hope it shows that I am human! I assure you, most architects that get into the top programs and graduate do well afterwards. When I was little, there was a famous guerrilla song which talked about the poorest people in our impoverished countries living in cardboard houses. Most of us who lived in refular brick houses saw that as one of the saddest aspects of our underdeveloped society. This appears to be somewhere in the USA. I can't even imagine this ever happening here.
My woodshop teacher told my class (and probably other classes) that if we ever wound up homeless, our house better be the nicest homeless house ever, he was like "If you're on the street in a cardboard box and you see me: you'd better start running. I will take apart your cardboard box and pee on it, and you know how useless wet cardboard is. You better find some pallets, take those suckers apart and make a house!" He's a really cool teacher, and wants to prepare you for not just woodworking but also life.

Honestly the only way I don't see him being a very valuable worker is if he just would rather live the precarious life of a hobo nomad wonderer (which, tbh fair enough I guess) or there's some mental unwellness getting in the way of his ability.
If the former is true, someone should still see if he'd be down to help volunteer from time to time to help house some of the other houseless folks. I built with insulation board, but water still leaks through, so a rain catcher doubles as a protector and a source of clean water in shitty weather. I saw a video where some guy had a huge oil drum on his roof and used gravity as an accelerate to power his hydroelectric plant, but it seems expensive compared to solar panels.

It is in my neighborhood and so very very many others. a church was gonna do a tiny house project to provide safe housing for our many homeless veterans in the area but the locals protested until the city said they can't because they would rather pretend the homeless don't exist than help them not be homeless. This man is doing his best and I applaud it.

I can see them trying to tear it down because it's an 'eye sore'. Well if the Government tried harder to help its people, we wouldn't have homeless people building 'eye sores' on the side of the street as a means to keep out of direct sun and harsh weather.

When what you charge for rent in all your homes is $3000 for a 1 br you either have to live in that house with all your family members or live on the streets. The fact is welfare has existed since the 60's why is it only now that we're seeing this housing crisis? The government doesn't control the prices of rent for all places. In rent controlled places there are laws in place saying how much homeowners can charge for rent.

I know a homeless guy who built a two story shack in a secluded area off of I-84 in Hartford, Connecticut. It's elevated on wooden palettes, has sturdy reinforced wooden walls, a strong roof, secure door, small windows with wooden hatches, and last I knew he was working on insulating it. He's been there for about 3 years, at least, and the state has tried to tell him to leave multiple times, all unsuccessfully.
