Holtz is right about Nebraska. He was a head coach for at least four decades and knows Midwest football and a lot about certain traditionally talented programs. He also probably coached against a lot of those great teams also.
TheAlmightyApe Look at who is crying Herbstreet and Mark May the two biggest hacks on ESPN. The 1971 was before I was born but looking at that year Nebraska,Oklahoma and Colorado finished 1,2 and 3. Neb didn't lose, Oklahoma only lost to Nebraska. Colorado lost to Nebraska and Oklahoma. That 71 neb team is certainly one of the best teams ever.
You know what's funny? Lou actually voted that the gators would beat Nebraska in 95, all bcuz of the playing field. A lot of people went against the huskers. But 95 Nebraska was the greatest college team ever, and I thought last years Ohio state would've been the team that would dethrone 95 Nebraska but they didn't live up to the hype.
Watching this made me sick to my stomach. Kirk is an idiot, "Who did Nebraska play in '95?" Nebraska only ran the table in the Big 8 which had HALF OF ITS CONFERENCE in the top 10 at the end of the year. They didn't just beat teams, they destroyed teams. No respect and it makes me sick.
'95 Nebraska scored 638 points (53.2 per game) while only allowing 174 (14.5 per game). Average margin of victory was 38.6 points, and their lowest margin of victory (Washington State), was 14. Defeated four teams that finished in the top 10 by an average score of 49-18. The team set Division 1-A records by averaging 7.0 yards per carry and also by allowing ZERO quarterback sacks on the season. 27 players from that team played in the NFL.
Idiots. All of you. Herbstriet was spot on. Day 1 of 95 Osborne knew he would face 5 - 1st year coaches, 4 in the Big 8 4 - coaches with a losing record at the school they were currently coaching at. 2- a winning record by at total of 7 games. and sure enuf, 8 of those 11 teams ended with 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 5, 5, 5 = 55 losses Osborne knew he had a real problem. The only thing he could do was to run up the score and hope for 2 wins in a row when he went bowling. FL would oblige by not showing up. You know like Neb didn't show 2 games later against ASU. ASU 19, Neb 0.
@@TheBjoe83 Neb beat WA State by 14 but LOL WSU had already lost to unranked Pitt by 4 then after the Neb game lost to 6 other teams by 12, 19, 10, 16, 12, 3 In other words, a bad team. Beat 4 top 10 teams *"by an average score of 49-18"* 1 was 1st year coach Rick Neuheisel 1 was Bill Synder. Retired 5-36 against top 10 teams 1 was Bill Mason who was 33-45 at Kansas prior to 95. And the last was Spurrier who has several big time flops on his resume.
What was really funny when watching this live was that '71 Nebraska was going to fall to a team earlier in the tournament but Herbstreit made a comment about "that computer in Lincoln overheating" and that set off a Husker fire storm
Yeah, minus the ‘02 buckeye team who ended the Miami dynasty. If you think that offense would’ve stood a chance in hell against that buckeye defense you’d be smoking dope.
There are four words that prevent me from listing the '01 Hurricanes as the best team ever: Boston College, Virginia Tech. Boston College was unranked when they played Miami, but they played strong the whole game. They were inside the Miami goal line trailing 12-7 in the closing seconds of the game and it was only a deflected pass caught for a pick-six that prevented the upset. #24 Virginia Tech had closed the gap to 26-24 late in their game with Miami and had the ball at midfield with a chance to take the lead, and it took another late interception to seal the deal. Because Miami had such close games against lackluster opponents instead of outright dominating them whereas the '71 Huskers, '72 Trojans, '95 Huskers and '05 Longhorns dominated all throughout (except against one or two TOP-10 ranked teams), I cannot list the '01 Hurricanes as the best team ever.
ThatOneGamer you sound so stupid Miami would have blown that running team out. Andre Johnson would have had a field day and that offensive line wouldn’t have given up any sacks to little wistrom. Freeney 10 times the better player than wistrom in college and the pro’s and he was shut dow by mount McKinney. Miami would have had to much speed for them white boys. That team has 8 track athletes running either the 100m, 4x100m or 200m. Miami by 30 over that team easy
Ironic, you saying someone else sounds so stupid. I know you don't like the facts that disprove your opinion, but the 95 Huskers would have beat Miami & it isn't even close. Miami barely held on against 2 mediocre teams, while the closest game Nebraska had was a 21 point lead after the 3Q. The only top 10 team Miami played was Nebraska, but the Huskers played 4 top 10 teams, winning those by an average score of 49-18. Did Miami have better pro talent? Without a doubt, but the Huskers were the far superior team. Anybody with an IQ in the double digits could objectively look at the facts & see that you're clueless about this.
Jim Applebee they barely beat the Miami hurricanes that had a offense, quarterback, receivers, and no debt on defense. If Miami had a quarterback and the 2001 receivers they would have blown Nebraska out. The 2001 team had better debt than the Nebraska team had. Nebraska wouldn’t have been able to throw anything on them and definitely wouldn’t have been able to run the ball on them a foh dummy. They would have blown Nebraska out. Miami had a oline that didn’t give up more than three sacks on the season. They went up against Osi Umenyiora, Demarcus Ware, and Dwight Freeney. Now don’t make me finish naming all the All Americans they played against. Name some big names in that wack ass conference they played against that year. I can tell you nobody.
Once again, there's a difference between pro talent & a team. Warren Sapp thought there was no way the Huskers would be able to run on them, but guess who was sitting on the sidelines sucking oxygen in the 4th quarter. If they were so good all the way around, why couldn't they dominate a couple of mediocre teams like vaTech & BC? Numbers don't lie. You can play the if they had all day long, but what if our starters needed to play the entire 4th quarter in our games? We were so far ahead, they barely saw the field in the 4th. The indisputable fact is that the only top 10 team Miami played that year was Nebraska, while we played 4 top 10 teams & destroyed them. We didn't need an Ed Reed pick 6 to hold off BC. Miami was more talented, but we were the better team.
Kirk mentions at 0:19 he "likes the defense" of 86 penn st over 71 nebraska when the 71 husker def was arguably the best defense ever. Cover of sports illustrated "immovable nebraska". What an idiot. Then he questions 95 Nebraskas schedule which included 4 teams that FINISHED in the top 10. Literally everything he said is stupid.
They ain't stoppin reggie bush vince young and willis mcgahee cmon bro this aint the 70s anymore football players evolve and get better as we gain a better understanding of the sport and what it takes to play. Players from a newer era will always be better.
One great player on a team will not beat a team with 21 good players and 1 great player. In 1971 Nebraska outscored opponents 507-104, held 10 of the 13 opponents to single digits or less. Beat teams that finished #2 by 4, finished #3 by 24 and finished #4 by 32 in the national championship game. Your logic is ignorant at best. Your saying that in their prime, Michael Jordan couldn't hang with today's players or Mike Tyson would get thumped by today's fighter. In your reality Bo Jackson would be lucky to even make practice squad. Willis McGahee, Regie Bush and Vince Young are great players and their respective teams were good. If they was to play 10 times for sure Miami, USC and Texas would have wins, but not more then 4 out of 10.
Their '95 team had what might have been the best OL ever, 2 dominant RBs, and an all time option QB. They were averaging over 400 yards rushing per game (Rushing - not passing). How many teams lose when they run for 400 yards? 400 yards passing doesn't mean that much (Look at Texas Tech, Hawaii, etc). But when a team runs over you like that, they can score and control the clock at will.
Teams 95 Florida beat #8 Tennessee 62-37 @ #21 LSU 28-10 @ #7 Auburn 49-38 #6 Florida State 35-24 #23 Arkansas 34-3 Teams 95 Nebraska beat #8 Kansas State 49-25 @ #7 Colorado 44-21 @ #10 Kansas 41-3 #2 Florida 62-24 Nobody can these 2 teams didn't play any body good that year. In fact even after Florida got hammered they stayed number 2 that alone should prove how good 95 Florida was and how great 95 Nebraska really was.
Ben Keenan Hmm, I'll buy the 71 and 95 teams, but I don't think I would say the 97 Huskers are on par with the 71 and 95 teams. The 97 team had a (very) narrow win against Missouri (who was unranked when they played them) on the now famous Fleakicker play to send the game to overtime which they later wonThe only close game for the 71 team was against a #2 ranked Sooner team (who also finished #2 in the final AP poll) and the only "close" game for the 95 team was a 35-21 win over Washington State team that had a good defense and who had beaten #12 UCLA the week before but was still unranked when they played them.
For me, the 1995 Huskers were the best. The teams I mentioned previously all had high-powered offenses and outstanding defenses as well as great to excellent special teams, and had 20+ players from those teams eventually going pro. But there are a couple key stats from the 1995 team that largely go unnoticed but separate themselves from the rest. The 1995 team allowed only FIVE punt returns all season for a total of 12 yards (tying an NCAA record) and allowed ZERO sacks the entire season.
Heres some of the players that 95 NU completely shut down in 95. 1. Chris Doering avg 14.9 yards per catch 2. Ike Hilliard avg 17.7 yards per catch 3. Reidel Anthony avg 15.3 yards per catch 4. Elijah Willams avg 12.6 yards per catch and avg 7.5 per carry 5. Jacquez Green avg 28 yards per catch 6. Terry Jackson avg 6.4 yards per carry 7. Fred Taylor avg 5.9 per carry 8. Danny Weurfull QB rating for the year 176 against 95 NU they couldn't do anything.
In my opinion, Top 5 College Football Programs with Elite Tradition. 1) Nebraska 1) Miami 3) Alabama 4) Michigan 5) USC -Both Nebraska and Miami Dominated 1 Decade of College Football Miami-80's Nebraska-90's -Alabama has 15 National Championships, and also had a few elite Coaches throughout the years of the program they deserve to be up there. -Michigan also has a rich tradition in their Back Yard with Football, and a lot of Heismans and National Championships they had as well. -USC is I would say about the same as Michigan although Michigan I feel has the upper hand.
Your missing Oregon Baylor and FSU because according to the all knowing ESPN they are the best teams to ever play and their fan bases agree even though only one of those three have won a title but quick thought give me 2 or three honorable mentions
George Horna don't have to tell and Ohio state fan that I'm still pissed how they did the tat scandal only five players had them that's it storm klien who was the feature in that I know personally didn't have a tat on his body
This is all 95 Nebraska's deffense did to 95 Florida 1. First Downs 15 2. Rushing/Yards 21 for -28 yards 3. Passed for 297 yards 4. Sacked 7 times for -40 yards 5. Passing 20-38-3 6. Fumbles 1-1 7. Time of possesion little over 24 minutes How can u say Nebraska's deffense didn't stop them?
I agree it's too bad Michigan and Nebraska didn't play that year. Then Michigan would be less one championship. 97 Michigan beat the likes of Ohio State by 6 points, Washington State by 5 and a huge ass whoopin against Iowa by 4 points. Some real dominance there. Nebraska on the other hand beat Oklahoma 69-7, Iowa State 77-14, Texas A&M 54-15 and destroyed Peyton Manning and his Tennessee team 42-17 for the REAL national championship. The comparison's aren't even close.
God how I wish we could transport the "95" Husker team to a Neutral Field and let Herbie transport ANY team he wanted...the "01" canes or whomever he wanted and have this settled where it counts....from whistle to whistle between the Hash marks....Simply put the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers would indeed settle this the old fashioned way....hit them right in the mouth and come out victorious once again....you look at the who's who of Quarterbacks who could really sling it and that Husker Team was built to rush the QB and not give them time to breathe let alone try and read a defense...they would have eat up a team like the "01" canes who couldn't run the ball period and had to rely on their passing game....that Nebraska team was built just for that purpose....be big and strong and quick enough to stop the run then fast enough to cover man and destroy their line with shear strength and quickness.....I don't care what QB you stick back there....if he is a pure pro style stand in the pocket QB ....he is in for a couple of hours worth of pain that will last a lifetime....Wistrom, the Peter's Brothers...etc....etc....from line to free safety that group of BLACKSHIRTS WERE THE BADDEST OF BAD....Sure the other teams would have gotten their "token" points but they would never make it close. Face facts....over Tom Osborne's time at Nebraska (including as an Assistant under Bob Devaney before he became head Coach) NO AND I MEAN NO TEAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAD EVEN CLOSE TO AS MUCH SUCCESS.... ENOUGH SAID.
2001 Miami needed a dropped 2-point conversion to beat an 8-4 Virginia Tech team that was hammered 38-7 by Pittsburgh earlier that season. Nebraska's closest game was a 14 point victory over Washington State. The closest contest outside of that game was a 23 point win over a Colorado team that finished #4 at the end of the season. In fact, Nebraska beat the #2, #5, #7, and #9 ranked teams as they finished in the final polls. Miami played teams ranked #8, #14, #15, #17, and #18.
My top ten all time 1. 1995 Nebraska 2. 1987 Miami 3. 1971 Nebraska 4. 1945 Army 5. 1988 Notre Dame 6. 1991 Miami 7. 2001 Miami 8. 2005 Texas 9. 2004 USC 10. 2013 Florida State Go Canes!!!
I think he means in context of their competition. If he meant on the field today, the 2015 Alabama or 2014 Ohio State probably beats all of the above minus 2014 FSU.
the 1995 Nebraska team was a better team then these teams. Reason 1, only team to get close to beat this team was Washington State, which only lost by 14. If there should be anyone to make a agruement its Steve Spurrier. He got his ass kicked in the National Championship game against this great team. 62-24. any questions? and yes my spelling is bad but who cares
Idiot. You don't state "Reason 1" if you don't state at least 1 more reason. Think outline, You dont have an A if you dont have a B. *"and yes my spelling is bad but who cares"* You cared enough to try and head off any comments about it.
What the HELL??? did he just say he questions the competition Nebraska had in 1995?? they destroyed 4 top 10 teams! (Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, Florida)
Top 5 1. 1995 NU (Won by an average of 39 PTS A GAME including the championship [38 pts]) 2. 1971 NU (Won by an average of 31 pts a game and beat two #2 teams during the season) 3. 1997 NU (Ahman Green's 206 yrds helped NU destroy Peyton Manning in the 'ship. Mich barely beats a shit team) 4. 1915 NU (8-0, NU would win 34 straight beating ND) 5.1983 NU (#1 all season. Avg. of 50+ pts a game on offense and less than 17 on defense. Only lost the championship game b/c there was not OT back then)
@@BOSSBOSS-kh3rz 4 teams that finished in the top 10, beat them all by more than 3 possessions, theres hardly 3 million people in nebraska, this poll wasnt overran with people from the state voting for their home team, it was nationwide. 01 miami had struggle wins against 2 mediocre teams.
The 01 Miami team he mentioned beat a Nebraska team in the Rose Bowl that didn't even win it's conference championship. 71 Huskers would of wiped the floor with Miami. The 95 team played and beat 4 top 10 teams.
stop smoking crack the 71' nebraska team had guys that would not match up..miami in 2001 had players like sean taylor and willis magahee on the BENCH...they were not even starters...kellen winslow jr was on the BENCH...miami was 3 deep at each position...bryant mckinnie is 6ft 8in at right tackle...he never gave up a sack in his college career lol stop sounding silly.
But guys like Rogers, Humm, Kinney, Carl Johnson in today's facilities and they'd wipe the floor with Miami. 12 of 13 games were won by 24 or more. 3 opponents finished in the final poll rankings. The closest game was 35-31 over OU, you know THE game of the century.
dannyhuskerjay the 94 Miami hurricanes have 0 to do with this discussion and Miami beat Nebraska in 83, 88, 91 and 2001 so have fun with that one win in 94 lol
did anyone else notice that Herbstreit didn't rattle off one statistic about the 95 Huskers? that's because when you do, you realize they would have beaten any team, anytime, any place. including the 01 Miami team. they averaged 400 yards a game, RUSHING. i believe they averaged over 40 minutes in time of possession. not only would 01 Miami have lost to them, they would have never had the ball. The Huskers are the greatest, PERIOD!!!
95 Huskers played 5 away games 3 of those teams were in the top 10. Name any other year where half of your confrence finished in the top 10. The Big 8 had 4 in the top 10 that year.
Barry Switzer of Oklahoma coached against those Nebraska teams from the early 70's and he would know just how good and dominant those Huskers teams of 1970-1972 were compared to some of these modern teams. I agree that the 1995 Nebraska team may have been the best of all time. They beat 4 teams that finished ranked in the top 10 that year (#2 Florida 62-24, #5 Colorado 44-21, #7 Kansas State 49-25, and #9 Kansas 41-3). The Fiesta Bowl win over Steve Spurrier and Florida for the National Championship was probably their most dominant win of the season. I remember most of the so called experts were predicting a Florida win saying that Steve Spurrier was the best coach in all of college football and that his pro style offense would be too much for Nebraska too handle. As it turned out, Nebraska's running game was too much for Florida to stop as Huskers rushed for over 500 yards and their defense totally dominated the line of scrimmage stopping Florida's so called powerful passing attack.
By the way, that 95 Nebraska team was one of the greatest combinations of talent and great coaching in the history of the sport, and Herbie is acting like it was just another team. Those are the kind of things that will keep him from going down as an elite announcer. He can't separate his personal feelings from his job ALL THE TIME. The great ones do, ALL THE TIME. Semper Fi.
negative... Miami defeated 2 consecutive ranked opponents by a combined 124-7 score (#14 Syracuse 59-0 and #12 Washington 65-7) The Hurricanes scored 512 points (42.6 ppg) while yielding only 117 (9.75 ppg) 16 1st round draft picks. I admit it would be a good game but there is no team in college football history that could blow this team out...including 95 Nebraska
They couldn't beat 01 Miami. When 94 Nebraska finally beat the Canes it was because they wore down a thin Miami Dline. Tommie Frazier spent most of the game on the sidelines because they needed some type of passing threat until they got gassed. 01 Miami had ridiculous depth upfront. They rotated 8 NFL players, most first and second rounders. Vince Wilfork couldn't crack the starting lineup. 95 Nebraska is the most dominant team I've seen. They simply couldn't beat 01 Miami running the option.
bamz95 I'm an Ohio State fan...the 95 huskers were the best ever. Its really not close. All the Miami and USC fans can suck it.They would beat the brakes of your ass.End of story.
bamz95 I also firmly believe the 2014-15 Buckeyes were the second best ever...even with 1 loss. What they did was nothing short of incredible, and that is also undeniable,so don't say I'm looking through rose colored glasses..again Miami and USC can suck it.
95 Nebraska was the greatest team of all time. Miami had to pull a pick 6 to beat a mediocre BC team & they beat #14 VT by 2. The only top 10 team they beat was Nebraska in the Rose Bowl. The Huskers won by an average of 38 points (no game close that 14 points) & they played 4 top 10 teams. Just like 95 Florida, 01 Miami had no chance. Quit confusing future pro talent with being a great team. The numbers don't lie.
How come when it comes to USC, no one mentions the 1972 USC Trojans? Sure the '04 team was good with Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and had a lot of talent and so forth. But the '04 team had three games decided by one possession (8 points or less) and only played three ranked teams. The '72 Trojans had all but one game decided by at least THREE possessions (or greater than 16 points) with the closest being a 30-21 win against #15 Stanford and defeated SIX ranked teams that year. As such, I think the '72 team was USC's absolute best team to date and not the '04 team.
2001 Miami had a 2 point game against VTech and only scored 18 points against unranked Boston College. The LEAST Nebraska scored in 1995 was 35 POINTS. 35!!! THE LEAST!!! The closest game was 2 touchdowns and the second closest game was 23 POINTS!! THAT IS PURE DOMINANCE. I saw Miami in 2001 and they were really good. Better than probably 2 or 3 of the teams on my list. (that was a joke list) But they were not in the same category as the '95 Huskers.
The 95 Husker team didn't have any competition ? They beat 4 teams that finished in the top 10 that season: Florida, Colorado, Kansas State and Kansas. And they beat all 4 by at least 3 TD's!
Husker Power Lol Nebraska has a 45 - 23 record against Oklahoma since the 30s. Oklahoma dominated the 50s Oklahoma Nebraska and Miami Dominated the 80s. Fsu dominated the 90s with Nebraska. Oklahoma dominated the 2000s Alabama has dominated the 2010s
Ozzy Traverse doesn’t matter, the 95 husker team was the best. The overall speed and just everything about the team , no one could stop the 95 huskers and they blew out every team too.
I will tell you who the '95 Huskers played that year: the #2 team in the country; the highly touted, undefeated, Fun 'n' Gunners from Florida. And those Gators were spanked 62-24.
To me the athletes on those 01 Miami and 04 USC would simply run past those older teams. You can be big and strong but if you can't catch them then you're not gonna win.
Its really hard to compare teams from different eras. The offenses today are so much faster with the spread while the offenses back in the day were more methodical. Plus you could get away with a lot more on defense too.
Lance LeBlanc That's exactly the point. Teams today would generally be a little faster and stronger than those from 10+ years ago, not to mention the offenses and defenses would have significant differences in style in different eras as well and to find some kind of weighted average to measure and compare the teams from these different eras playing styles is a nigh impossible task. At best you can use stats like strength of schedule, most dominant wins vs close/lackluster wins, average winning margin, offensive yards and defensive yards a game, etc. to measure them and even, different eras and different styles of play factor in there, too.
Did Nebraksa throw tha ball??? Give me a break Herbstreit they didn't have to throw it. That Nebraska team didn't throw it and they still averaged 556.3 yards per game and 53.2 points a game. If I'm doing that I wouldn't throw ever again.
Kirk says that Nebraska didn't have competition because there was no team in the country in 1996 that was even in their league. Kirk is just pissed. Why did Nebraska need to pass when they could just run it down your throat. If it isn't broken don't fix it. If it works why stop? GO HUSKERS!!!!
Everytime I watch this I get mad at Kirk, 01 Miami and 05 USC... really?!?!?! '95 Huskers destroyed the #2 team in the championship game, and 4 teams from their conference were in the top 10 at the end of the year. 4 teams out of the Big 8, that is 50% of the conference ranked in the top 10. 1995 Nebraska is far and away the best team of all time in college football!!!.
Everyone who +1's Eduardo's comment is exactly like Kirk. First off you can't compare teams from different era's by talent on the team, cause clearly athletes are different now then they were in the 90's and so on. The only way you can compare two teams is by their body of work. So lets compare the 95 Huskers and 01 Miami. Both teams were 12-0. Huskers had 4 victories vs ranked opponents none lower than #10, of those 4 the closest margin of victory was 23 points. Miami had 5 victories vs. ranked opponents, all of which were outside the top ten save for their victory against #4 Nebraska, of those 5 the closest margin of victory was 2 points. No unranked opponent came within 14 points of Nebraska, while Miami nearly lost to BC and VT, BC was not ranked and VT was #14, game saving interception to prevent the loss to the latter. In the end total points scored over the year '95 Huskers 638-174, '01 Miami 512-117. Clearly these are two of the best teams to ever appear in college football, however the '95 Huskers are clearly better than '01 Miami, given that the '95 Huskers had the most lopsided victory in National Championship history. I will conceed that '01 Miami's body of work is more impressive than that of the '71 Huskers, making '01 Miami #2 all time. However there has yet to be a team that could match the awesome power that was 'The Power of Red' in 1995.
What part of 2001 Miami's body of work was more impressive than 1971 Nebraska? Don't tell me first rounders. That is the accomplishment of the individual, not the team. Miami was 12-0, while Nebraska was 13-0. Miami out scored opponents 512-117, while Nebraska out scored opponents 507-104. There records and scoring are too close to say one is better than the other. Miami did play more ranked opponents. Those opponents finished #8, #14, #15, #18, #19 and #21 in the polls. Nebraska only played 3 ranked opponents, but they finished #2, #3 and #4 in the polls. No teams has ever done what Nebraska did defeating the #2, #3 and #4 teams in the nation. One could argue strength of schedule either way, but the strength of ones schedule truly comes from ones best opponents. The one factor that I believe separates these two teams is consistency. Nebraska won 12 of 13 games by 24 or more points. The one game that was close was "The Game of the Century" against #2 Oklahoma. Miami on the other hand won 5 of 12 games by 23 or fewer points. Miami struggled against #18 Virginia Tech and #21 Boston College. Miami had a great team in 2001, but they didn't always play like it.
95 Nebraska team is the best team of all time. Ask anyone that knows a thing a bout college football and they will tell you the same thing. No matter where they are from. I'm from Alabama and have a lot of pride in my school and it's legacy, but the 95 Nebraska team is the best of all time. After that who cares who the 2nd best is.
'04 USC played 4 teams that finished ranked. Beat Va Tech by 11, Cal by 4, AZ St by 38, and OU by 36.Average of 22 points from those games. '01 Miami beat FSU by 22, Syracuse by 59, BC by 11, Va Tech by 2, Washington by 58, then Nebraska by 23. Averaging those games to make 29. BTW Nebraska was the ONLY team they played that finished in the top 12. '95 Nebraska team beat K-St by 24, Colorado by 23, Kansas by 38, and Florida by 38. ALL of which finished in the top 10. Average of 30.
wrong. Miami was in the big east in 2001. And they also set a college record by beating two top 15 teams in consecutive weeks by a combined score of 124-7. Something no nebraska team has ever done.
KIRK HERBSTREIT DIDN'T DO ANY RESEARCH FOR THIS SHOW - #2. Kirk asked "In 1971 did Nebraska throw the football?" Do your homework Kirk? Nebraska's offense averaged 430 yds/gm and 41% of those yards came throwing the football. NU's offense passed for 59% more yards and 360% more TDs than their defense allowed. Kirk likes to talk about 1st rounders, but I'll bet he doesn't know that Nebraska's starting QB from 1971 went in the 1st round (11th overall). In 1971 Nebraska DID throw the football!
The "Coast" schools are always favored. USC, Miami, Florida, Florida State. It seems they always have some edge over the middle states. Based on recruiting, level of talent, etc. However, recruiting and talent aren't the only ingredients for a successful college football team. So I always love it when Florida or California teams lose. Go Huskers!!!
i agree. the huskers had tremendous athletes. all of their lineman were extremely strong, and ahman green ran a 4.38 40 his freshman year at NU. anyone who says nebraska didnt have athletes in the 90s are stupid. and even if they didnt, so what? they won the national championship 3 times in 4 years! no one should care what type of athletes you have if you can do that. the only reason anybody has it in for NU is because NU had a reputation of whooping everybody in the 90s.
@scarletshrapnel The lowest amount of points they scored in a game was 35. They played three top ten teams toward the end of the regular season and beat each of them by more than 20 points. And they put up over 60 points four times in the season, including a 62-24 dismantling of the #2 team in the nation, Florida. They had third-string players in for almost the entire fourth quarter of the national championship for crying out loud!
I love when Kirk and Lou are arguing and Kirk stands up and keeps running his mouth, Lou gets pissed up and stands up. He was ready to take the Herbie behind the woodshed and whup his ass
Yes! That's very true. Osborne rarely played his starters much into the 4th quarter, if at all. Even the backups against first string talent, were putting up huge numbers. The Big Red Machine had depth at every position and at any given moment, any player could come in and dominate at his position. No doubt, the Huskers of the '90's were the best ever. Especially the '95 team.
For the people suggesting that '01 Miami (Or any other team) would beat the '95 Nebraska team because of future NFL draft picks, we are talking about college football. It is a different game than the NFL. People are comparing apples and oranges. The Nebraska system of smash mouth football, with the occasional play action pass, was unstoppable. They simply beat teams up. Then the defense took the field, and created havoc. Don't look at how many 5 star recruits Nebraska had.
1995 nebraska beat every team it played by lopsided margins, including a very speedy, pass-happy florida gator team in the national championship game. that husker team threw the ball enough to keep defenses honest and ran it better than anyone ever has. they would beat any team you put them on the field with. period. and if you're too young to remember them, then maybe you shouldn't be on here leaving comments, because you really don't know what you're talking about.
@subwayg16 You're half right Deveney was the head coach but Osborne was the offensive coordinator who revamped offense with a balanced attack operated from the I formation. The spread offence has been used for a long long time. TCU used it in the 1950s.
'95 Nebraska beat #8 Kansas State 49-25 #7 Colorado the next week 44-21 #10 kansas 41-3 and #2 Florida 62-24 You're right we didn't play any competition, because we were 100 x better than any other team in the nation. I also like how Herbstreit acts like we have 100 million computers in Nebraska. This was open to the entire world to vote GBR
The 95 Husker D line was stacked Grant Wistrom, Jared Tomich ,Jason and Christian Peters. Probably one of the best D lines ever in college football. In fact only one starter on the deffense didn't go pro and that was Tyrrel Farlley, only reason he didn't was because of off the field issues. Every other starter went pro and was first string at some point in their careers.
Da U in 01' almost lost to BC and VT. 95" Skers rolled everybody. Its funny to me how Herby gets all mad! All we have out here is NU football and we love it! Like Corso said "GET OVER IT!" lol!
Holtz is right about Nebraska. He was a head coach for at least four decades and knows Midwest football and a lot about certain traditionally talented programs. He also probably coached against a lot of those great teams also.
Notice how the guys who were ACTUALLY AROUND during that era are agreeing with the voters?
This thing was like in 06 so Ohio State wasn't in it
New name " Karen Herbstreit "
Lmao
Watching this made me sick to my stomach. Kirk is an idiot, "Who did Nebraska play in '95?" Nebraska only ran the table in the Big 8 which had HALF OF ITS CONFERENCE in the top 10 at the end of the year. They didn't just beat teams, they destroyed teams. No respect and it makes me sick.
Herbstreit is an idiot who knows nothing about football and never checks the facts, just goes with his opinion.
Bjoe Amen brother! Game, Set and Match!
Idiots. All of you. Herbstriet was spot on.
Day 1 of 95 Osborne knew he would face
5 - 1st year coaches, 4 in the Big 8
4 - coaches with a losing record at the school they were currently coaching at.
2- a winning record by at total of 7 games.
and sure enuf, 8 of those 11 teams ended with 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 5, 5, 5 = 55 losses
Osborne knew he had a real problem. The only thing he could do was to run up the score and hope for 2 wins in a row when he went bowling. FL would oblige by not showing up. You know like Neb didn't show 2 games later against ASU. ASU 19, Neb 0.
@@TheBjoe83
Neb beat WA State by 14
but LOL
WSU had already lost to unranked Pitt by 4
then after the Neb game
lost to 6 other teams by
12, 19, 10, 16, 12, 3
In other words, a bad team.
Beat 4 top 10 teams *"by an average score of 49-18"*
1 was 1st year coach Rick Neuheisel
1 was Bill Synder. Retired 5-36 against top 10 teams
1 was Bill Mason who was 33-45 at Kansas prior to 95.
And the last was Spurrier who has several big time flops on his resume.
What was really funny when watching this live was that '71 Nebraska was going to fall to a team earlier in the tournament but Herbstreit made a comment about "that computer in Lincoln overheating" and that set off a Husker fire storm
1971 Jerry Tagge 2,178 yards 17 TD - yes, Nebraska threw the ball. 95' Nebraska would beat anyone. Ever
Right on the money BIG ERN!!
Yeah, minus the ‘02 buckeye team who ended the Miami dynasty. If you think that offense would’ve stood a chance in hell against that buckeye defense you’d be smoking dope.
@@cdajah6920 they would destroy the 02 buckeyes. Just like they did with Florida and the fun&gun.
ThatOneGamer 05 Texas isn’t that great. They barely won
Did Nebraska pass the ball in '71? Let's see, our quarterback was only an All-American that year.
Teams 95 Florida beat
#8 Tennessee 62-37
@ #21 LSU 28-10
@ #7 Auburn 49-38
#6 Florida State 35-24
#23 Arkansas 34-3
Teams 95 Nebraska beat
#8 Kansas State 49-25
@ #7 Colorado 44-21
@ #10 Kansas 41-3
#2 Florida 62-24
Nobody can these 2 teams didn't play any body good that year.
In fact even after Florida got hammered they stayed number 2 that alone should prove how good 95 Florida was and how great 95 Nebraska really was.
71,95, and 97 huskers tied for best all time, so just get over it.
And also had 285 pancake blocks that season !!
If we couldve played Pen State in 94 we would have devestated them and sent them home
I bet Kirk Herbstreit would try to vote a 0-12 team over a Nebraska team that won a national championship.
Da Tube yep he hates us for some reason that I could never understand, but I never liked him either so....
Herbstreit hates Nebraska with a passion lol! 95 team the best ever!! GBR!!!
Heres some of the players that 95 NU completely shut down in 95.
1. Chris Doering avg 14.9 yards per catch
2. Ike Hilliard avg 17.7 yards per catch
3. Reidel Anthony avg 15.3 yards per catch
4. Elijah Willams avg 12.6 yards per catch and avg 7.5 per carry
5. Jacquez Green avg 28 yards per catch
6. Terry Jackson avg 6.4 yards per carry
7. Fred Taylor avg 5.9 per carry
8. Danny Weurfull QB rating for the year 176
against 95 NU they couldn't do anything.
In my opinion, Top 5 College Football Programs with Elite Tradition.
1) Nebraska
1) Miami
3) Alabama
4) Michigan
5) USC
-Both Nebraska and Miami Dominated 1 Decade of College Football Miami-80's Nebraska-90's
-Alabama has 15 National Championships, and also had a few elite Coaches throughout the years of the program they deserve to be up there.
Oregon Baylor and FSU don't even come close to the top 5 I put up there, no matter what. You might as well say I'm missing Stanford.
George Horna oh but they are because they put up.points so therefore they are the best this is all sarcasm sorry for not clarifying that
osu5inarow I understand ESPN says that but they are soo biased its not even funny.
George Horna don't have to tell and Ohio state fan that I'm still pissed how they did the tat scandal only five players had them that's it storm klien who was the feature in that I know personally didn't have a tat on his body
This is all 95 Nebraska's deffense did to 95 Florida
1. First Downs 15
2. Rushing/Yards 21 for -28 yards
3. Passed for 297 yards
4. Sacked 7 times for -40 yards
5. Passing 20-38-3
6. Fumbles 1-1
7. Time of possesion little over 24 minutes
How can u say Nebraska's deffense didn't stop them?

I love how the old guys on the left are clowning Kirk the entire time
Lee Corso is the man lol.
Everyone loves to hate Nebraska. I watched the huskers wear down Miami when they had Sapp Reed and several other top picks.
Agreed
2001 Miami needed a dropped 2-point conversion to beat an 8-4 Virginia Tech team that was hammered 38-7 by Pittsburgh earlier that season.
Nebraska's closest game was a 14 point victory over Washington State. The closest contest outside of that game was a 23 point win over a Colorado team that finished #4 at the end of the season. In fact, Nebraska beat the #2, #5, #7, and #9 ranked teams as they finished in the final polls.
Miami played teams ranked #8, #14, #15, #17, and #18.
My top ten all time
1. 1995 Nebraska
2. 1987 Miami
3. 1971 Nebraska
4. 1945 Army
5. 1988 Notre Dame
6. 1991 Miami
7. 2001 Miami
8. 2005 Texas
9. 2004 USC
10. 2013 Florida State
Go Canes!!!
1945 army would die against 01 Miami
I think he means in context of their competition. If he meant on the field today, the 2015 Alabama or 2014 Ohio State probably beats all of the above minus 2014 FSU.
Moses Skjei the 1988 WVU would destroy all of these teams just because of major Harris
I dont see no 97 nebraska on there.
best team... 95 Nebraska... 2nd best...prolly 01 Miami. After that tied for 3rd...USC, UT, 71 Huskers
the 1995 Nebraska team was a better team then these teams.
Mich barely beat Wash St. and Neb smashed Tenn. in their bowl game. Huskers were overwhelmingly better then Michigan in 97.
I absolutely love this video. Scene Kirk Herbstreit being a little baby. The Huskers just got under his skin love it
What the HELL??? did he just say he questions the competition Nebraska had in 1995?? they destroyed 4 top 10 teams! (Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, Florida)

4. 1915 NU (8-0, NU would win 34 straight beating ND)

Lee Corso is fantastic. "Hey. Get over it!"
Just like the Miami team against the 94 huskers right? Lol Miami fans forget history

This aged VERY WELL lmao
did anyone else notice that Herbstreit didn't rattle off one statistic about the 95 Huskers? that's because when you do, you realize they would have beaten any team, anytime, any place. including the 01 Miami team. they averaged 400 yards a game, RUSHING. i believe they averaged over 40 minutes in time of possession. not only would 01 Miami have lost to them, they would have never had the ball. The Huskers are the greatest, PERIOD!!!
'95 Nebraska would wipe the floor with any team to ever see the field in the entire history of college football.
I would take several Miami teams, a few Bama teams, a couple USC teams, and 91 UW over 95 Nebraska
Ohio State > Nebraska

95 Huskers played 5 away games 3 of those teams were in the top 10. Name any other year where half of your confrence finished in the top 10. The Big 8 had 4 in the top 10 that year.
UA-cam algorithm got jokes 😂
Yeah, that's what a lot of people said The Gators were going to do to us in the NC. We all witnessed how that worked out.
there has never been and may never be a team as talented, deep, and dominant at every position in every game as the 1995 nebraska team, Period.
08 Gators
Here 15 years later
Semper Fi.
negative...
Miami defeated 2 consecutive ranked opponents by a combined 124-7 score (#14 Syracuse 59-0 and #12 Washington 65-7)
The Hurricanes scored 512 points (42.6 ppg) while yielding only 117 (9.75 ppg)
16 1st round draft picks.
I admit it would be a good game but there is no team in college football history that could blow this team out...including 95 Nebraska
This isn't who had better NFL players.... it's who had a better TEAM. Nebraska's team statistically had a way better year and were just better...
kirk looked seriously pissed....ha!
95 Huskers best team. End of story.
They simply couldn't beat 01 Miami running the option.
bamz95
I'm an Ohio State fan...the 95 huskers were the best ever. Its really not close. All the Miami and USC fans can suck it.They would beat the brakes of your ass.End of story.
bamz95
I also firmly believe the 2014-15 Buckeyes were the second best ever...even with 1 loss. What they did was nothing short of incredible, and that is also undeniable,so don't say I'm looking through rose colored glasses..again Miami and USC can suck it.
bamz95
USC and Miami can suck it.In case I forgot to mention it.
How can you not laugh when you watch this? I get a kick out of it everytime. GBR!
The 2005 usc trojans were prob most elite
Yes he is he kept my noles out the playoffs
95 team was the best ever! GBR!!
Shut up Herbstreit. Go Big Red!!!
The 95 Husker team didn't have any competition ? They beat 4 teams that finished in the top 10 that season: Florida, Colorado, Kansas State and Kansas. And they beat all 4 by at least 3 TD's!
Kirk get over yourself , Nebraska was the best team ever...
Kirk herbs trier hates Nebraska be cuz we kick Ohio states ass when he was a qb
Nateofog . Minecraft yep,he will never forget it.
Here's how I know 95 Nebraska would beat 2001 Miami: coaching. Period. Tom Osborne kicks Larry Coker's ass.
To me the athletes on those 01 Miami and 04 USC would simply run past those older teams. You can be big and strong but if you can't catch them then you're not gonna win.
Right the 95 huskers had no speed right? Cough 62-24.
Just like the 95' Gators with their speed and how ESPN said they were going to run wild on Nebraska.
He's right though. 2001 miami hurricanes
No one can beat that 01 Miami team that team was full of nfl talent
Doesn't matter about NFL talent, cause if you want to start playing that game, 27 members of the 95 team went on to have great careers in the NFL.
Everytime I watch this I get mad at Kirk, 01 Miami and 05 USC... really?!?!?! '95 Huskers destroyed the #2 team in the championship game, and 4 teams from their conference were in the top 10 at the end of the year. 4 teams out of the Big 8, that is 50% of the conference ranked in the top 10. 1995 Nebraska is far and away the best team of all time in college football!!!.
sunflashjt Thank you
Everyone who +1's Eduardo's comment is exactly like Kirk.
2019 LSU gotta be the all time best now
I'd say the 95 Nebraska would make quick work of Alabama and LSU today. Close games yeah but not field goal close.
I'd have to agree. All anybody has to know is that the 1995 Nebraska Huskers team is the all-time greatest college football team of all time.
95 Nebraska team is the best team of all time. Ask anyone that knows a thing a bout college football and they will tell you the same thing. No matter where they are from. I'm from Alabama and have a lot of pride in my school and it's legacy, but the 95 Nebraska team is the best of all time. After that who cares who the 2nd best is.
not one team would ever beat the 95 huskers
Lee Corso is funny "get over it"
'04 USC played 4 teams that finished ranked.
Well if you are saying that Nebraska fans care more then any other fans you are correct.
wrong. Miami was in the big east in 2001. And they also set a college record by beating two top 15 teams in consecutive weeks by a combined score of 124-7. Something no nebraska team has ever done.
2001 Miami had 2 close games with 8-4 teams, thats not very impressive. 95 HUSKERS GREATEST EVER NO DOUBT.
Miami 2001 National Title Team the best EVER!! I agree its not Nebraska's' fault they had a lot of great teams Kirk is hating!
The 71 Huskers beat the Number 2,3 and 4th ranked teams that year.
have u ever watched any video of 95 nebraska they were dominant 01 canes cant compare
95 Huskers would smash the 01 canes.
95'Nebraska team is the BEST of ALL-TIME and i'm a sooner fan.
Guys, this is just good comedy, laughed the whole way through.
Oh man I used to love watching the opponents O-Line go backwards series after series in 1995 when facing our defense.
2001 MIAMI greatest team of all time i would like to see that game 95 nebraska vs 01 canes
ESPN should this again soon. They should do categories and should do one for basketball.
'95 Nebraska beat #8 Kansas State 49-25 #7 Colorado the next week 44-21 #10 kansas 41-3 and #2 Florida 62-24
You're right we didn't play any competition, because we were 100 x better than any other team in the nation.
I also like how Herbstreit acts like we have 100 million computers in Nebraska. This was open to the entire world to vote
GBR
10 of the offensive starters on offense in 1994 and most of 1995 were from Nebraska.
Go Big Red.
So what was determined was, the 95 huskers is by far the greatest team ever. Fine by me. Go big red.
the 1971 team is considered so good because that year the top 3 were Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
Da U in 01' almost lost to BC and VT. 95" Skers rolled everybody. Its funny to me how Herby gets all mad! All we have out here is NU football and we love it! Like Corso said "GET OVER IT!" lol!
